GFWL is a clunky and annoying system from my experience, and that's when it works. When it doesn't it drives me mad. I've only used it for 2 games and that's more than enough, thanks.

Scrapped. The GFWL network is a heavy-handed and retarded attempt to support PC gaming culture.

It is essentially an intrusive and annoying DRM system. Some people make the same claim about steam, but no one talks to those people because they live in their mother's collective basements.

It stops me buying games I have a little interest in, but aren't necessarily a must-buy. Case in point while Bulletstorm looks like it could be a bit of fun, I won't get it because of GFWL. Best Fallout 3 mod of all time is the one that mods out GFWL.
steam version requires gfwl?? please no?
I think so, Dawn of War 2 certainly did when purchased through Steam.
I have a moderatly strict no-gfwl policy.

Looks like DOW2 is off the buy list, as is bulletstorm. I'm too busy to play em anyway.

Perhaps the Duke will be the crazyshooter I pick up.
Well if you are ever interested in the DoW2 franchise you should know that Retribution has dropped GFWL like a hot potato and now solely uses Steam.

My first, and worst, experience with GFWL was with GTAIV on Steam. Since then I've encountered it in a few other games... in all cases it is an unnecessary addon that just slows down the game and barely functions as multiplayer. Just use Steamworks and let GFWL die.

Especially in GTAIV as it came out... three services, Steam+GFWL+RSC? Insane. Not to mention that the bloody GFWL thinks I live in Netherlands, USA (WTF?) and I cannot alter this.

//Edit: Level up! 600th post.

I don't mind it all too much, but I'd love to see less services needed to log into to play my games.

GFWL is disgusting. I read about it "bringing the console-feeling of multiplayer to the PC". Whaaa? Why would you want to do it?

Well, my experience is: It allowed me to play Street Fighter IV online. So good so far. Then i switched to Windows 7. And now i can't play anymore. (It can't get a connection) Changed nothing, ports are open,no firewall, no other program has ANY problems. So yeah, now i can't play the ONE game i needed this crap program for.

Also if i set someone to: "FUCK of, i won't play with this rude mic-spamming bastard", GFWL still matches me with him. It doesn't display latencies as NUMBERS but as crude bars. The control is optimzed on 3 buttons, even if we have a damn mouse and full keyboard. Eugh... the damn thing is just weird.
At least you can get it to recognise you have a mouse and keyboard. My copy of Batman: AA thinks I use an Xbox 360 controller during gameplay, despite me navigating around menus with the mouse. I have never been past the prison doors where the Joker was wheeled through, because I can't move.

Why is it so bad?

I have a few GFWL games, and it's absolutely no different from using Steam. Save for the need to log in occasionally, but without the annoying black popups.

Never had a problem with GFWL. Kind of liked it actually.

I use Steam, too.

It's whatever...
Congratulations!

Those who can use GFWL are obviously more advanced computer users than the many who can't quite grasp it's simple functions.

Be proud fellow competent computer user, we are a dieing breed.
Hey, you forgot your sarcasm tags.

The only slight saving grace of GFWL is that I can track stats and achievements over multiple platforms. Beyond that, it's just a hindrance that seems to have little to nothing to add to the experience of the game, and it some cases just outright ruins the game.

It isn't terrible, but considering the alternatives - which actually offer benefits to the end-user (a list of games, direct-from-developer updates, universal stats tracking and an actually good instant messaging service built-in) - it's just an outdated piece of crap faux-DRM system that either needs the biggest overhaul since Windows 3.0, or to just die.

I really dont mind GFWL. Much like anything there are pros and cons.

Pros:
Actual ownership, or at least something closer than steams "We want to look benevolent but when push comes to shove you dont own anything.

Cons:
They simply do not have good prices. It is rare when they offer something that could actually be called a deal. Consider the best deal from them in recent memory was Age 3 for 10c and that was in November. Given that steam has multiple deals per week its hard to call that competitive.

Much like anything that has the microsoft logo, Its saturated with processes that start on bootup and end up whoring up memory needlessly. And its never something as simple as ending the process. Only way I found to stop these processes was to manually configure windows via MSconfig to not load these processes. A rather annoying thing to not be able to simply shut a program off.

Beyond all that, what I have seen from GFWL its not too terribly bad. I honestly did not see a lot of technical differences from Steam. Basically the same functions, different shell. I do not know if its from posessing a better understanding of windows than most or Having a better than average PC that can handle GFWL, but honestly my ability to play anything through it has yet to be hindered by anything other than my own simple errors.

I can't believe People would actually defend GFWL never mind that it's inferior to its competition in almost every way. Its horrible for the people that live in "Unsupported countries." When they purchase a GFWL game they get this wonderful message telling them that they can't use the games multiplayer because GFWL is not supported in their country. How the fuck is that even legal.I didn't pay 60 bucks so I could only use the games single player.
