I think you misunderstood him. They're failed degrees, as in: he tried to do something with his life, multiple times at that, but he kept failing.

Now mister OP, it seems that you have failed a lot of times. To solve that problem you must go to it roots, discover what all those failures have in common and work out why you failed. Then work on that problem and try again. It's all you can do.
