Warzone 2100. It's freeware now.
You get to design your own tank like vehicles using different parts, such as hulls, weapons and wheels, tracks or hovercraft.

The RTS genre begins and ends with Blizzard games.

Starcraft (+ Brood War)
Warcraft III (+ TFT)

Oh look, a self righteous Blizzard fanboy. Let's be friends, I'm one too!

While I think Blizzard is the best game developer evarrr I don't think they've made the best RTSes evarrr. Even though one of the them is fantaically worshipped by South Korea.

IMO, Chris Taylor when he was still with Cavedog did. Ever heard of Total Annihilation?

The only RTS I really like is StarCraft. Any other just doesn't seem as fun. "Spawn more Overlords!"

I said in another thread that I played Halo wars and found the RTS thing boring. Well I?ve been called out so much because of it. I'll give it another crack even gods can be wrong. All I ask is to be kind to my wallet and PC. It still runs on coal.

Tell me as much as you can. Why is it great? You know why do you love it? Feel free to leave as much detail as you please. I will read all of it.
It's alright, I've never been able to get into RTS's either.

Apparently Rome: Total War is supposed to be good though.

I dunno if it's been mentioned, and I'm practically passing out from exhaustion, but Tom Clancy's EndWar is a pretty good RTS. It takes some getting used to, and if your computer runs on coal it probably won't handle it well, but it is a GREAT game IMO.

Man, what's with all the mainstream games? That's a lot, and a lot of Warcraft 3 and Starcraft I've seen floating around here.

That's one. Open source, brilliant game. Go get it!

I don't suppose anyone here has heard of Sword of the Stars?

And what about:

Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2
Faces of War
Men of War

.. these three are just about the same game, though Soldiers came first, and Men of War is the latest installment. It's a RTS, but on a very low level. You can actually control individual men and organize their entire inventories! It has direct control mode, so you can directly take control of.. a KV-1, for example. Fun to be had by all!

'Command and Conquer Generals'. With the 'Zero Hour' Expansion Pack.

I second this! Although I haven't played Generals, the Red Alert games were fantastic and I'd recommend them to anybody looking for good, enjoyable RTS games.
This, exactly this
I Do agre whit you on RA 2.
But Generals still being a decent RTS dit not deserevt the Command & conquer title.
Generals just didden had anyting to do with the C&C back story's and was given the C&C title purely for marketing.

Must say, EA redeamt them selfs with Tyberium Wars.

Tyberium THE FUCK IS TYBERIUM

it is tiberium, now excuse me, im going to come back when you have changed this
You realy think i will after a responce like that?

Starcraft is your best bet, although you can't go wrong with the "Age of ____" games. Rise of Nations is also a great one.

Age of Empires 2 I love it because there are very few games in the world were you can pit the Aztec's against the celts in realtime. Also it has suicide bombers and it wont destroy your computer.

Even though everyone has already said it, Starcraft. It's perfect for your situation. Very cheap, will run on low grade computers, and it's very good. Also, you need the practice for when starcraft 2 comes out. The expansion pack Brood war as well

Then of course Warcraft 3, and the expansion pack The Frozen Throne.

Command and Conquer is nice

the first Dawn of War game i felt was pretty decent, its what got me into RTS' originally so i recon it would be a good starter for beginners. The spec for it is seriously low so you shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't recommend Dark Crusade for someone who's not that into RTS already 'cause the whole thing of having to defend captured territory from invasion can get a little repetitive. So if you're going for single player story mode on Dawn of War and the expansion Winter Assault is a great for RTS beginners. But if you prefer Online versus play or against AI skirmishes then D.o.W Dark Crusade is the better option, 'cause it has more maps, more races & more units, but keeps the low spec & easy-to-learn controls that i feel an RTS beginner would really benefit from.
