Okay, I just have to rant about this...

I came across this picture while browsing my usual humor website, and it pissed me off so much that I just had to rant about it. This might be the unfunniest, most pretentiously angsty and annoying thing I've seen in a very long time.

Just who the hell thought that picture was worth making? Is it meant to be funny? Is it supposed to say something? Jesus fuck, this is exactly the kind of thing I can see some angsty pretentious 14-year old who's never faced any real problems in their life make to make themselves feel superior and more intelligent to others. What's even more annoying is that the image was called "Realistic cat". No it's not. It's angsty, overly pessimistic and smug cat.

Are most of these things true? Yes. Will they likely apply to most of us? Yes. Does being reminded of these things benefit anyone in any way? Fuck no. Does thinking in the way this image represents get anyone anywhere? Fucking hell no.

I felt so angered by this picture because I was like that in my teenage years, thinking all "A pessimist is never disappointed" and feeling all high and mighty because of how cool my misanthropy made me feel. If I could draw for shit, it could have been me 7 years ago who made this picture. Luckily I got over it by the time I got to high school. As time passes I look at myself at that age with more and more contempt, and every time I see something like the image above, I'm reminded of just how little anyone knows about anything at that age, and my berserk button just goes nuts. Misanthropy and overt pessimism don't make anyone cool, they make them boring and irritating Negative Nancy's who I'd just want to tell to fuck off and come back in 5 years time.

Phew, glad to have dat outta my system.

So what are the most annoying things you've seen online recently? An' whuddya dink a' dis pictcha hiah?

Oh yeah. That looked like it was going to make a good point, that you aren't special and better than everyone else, that you will fail.

Which is an important point, because everyone will. Telling kids if they wish really hard they'll win a big prize over people who worked for it is a terrible idea.

But then it just turned into a list of random stuff designed to upset/annoy for no reason.

I just laugh at shit like this.

People who make this try so hard at presenting themselves as someone who doesn't care, when if they really didn't care they wouldn't have even made it in the first place. I mean, if you really don't care, you don't care if people are aware whether or not you care.

Take a page out of Morla's book.

I found it funny in an absurd sort of way. It's just a list of cute cartoon cats saying unnecessarily mean things while staring at you with dead eyes. It would be annoying and pretentious if it was a list without pictures, but the cats are incongruous enough compared to the dialogue to make it actually rather funny for me.

Well the truth hurts ,i guess. And nothing there is perticularly false . I don't see the problem really . If you haven't accepted most of what was written yet , i think you still got a bit of growin up to do.

It's just a juxtaposition of cartoon cats who are usually overwhelmingly positive and overwhelmingly bleak statements. It's a fairly poor attempt to be subversive. I don't personally find it funny but I think you're missing the point.

Look at how hard I don't care, Shinji.
I care so little that I had to quote you just to inform you of how little I care.

Because internet.

OT: I got sort of a chuckle out of the absurdity of it, but it was more of a condescending "Oh really?" chuckle than "Hahaha, that's funny!"

Everyone knows that I'm the most glorious bastard to ever grace this green earth. I'll be the God-Emperor before the decade is out! I shall root out the Heretics, in the name of the Inquisition! Blood for the Blood God!

Er, whoops, I may be getting wires crossed here, sorry about that.

What's the God-Emporer's first name? See? It applies to you as well.

OT:
I don't see what's so rage-inducing about that image. I mean, all those things are true. The image isn't necessary or funny, but as long as it's not coming after me, you know, "sticks and stones." I might just be a hypocrite though, I've gotten angry over more petty things.

GW have made some questionable decisions, especially in their HH stuff, but to reveal the Emperor's name, and as "Shrekfan"...no.

Like the saying goes, "it's funny because it's true".
Also because of the dissonance between cute cats and grim facts.

You realize that you're reacting in exactly the way they want you to, right?
Going onto forums and complaining about pictures some stupid 16 year old made is just what drives these people, if they find this post they're probably going to laugh at you and go make another.

So then, where is the problem?

I came to investigate because a good ranting is usually fun to read, but this just seems pretty damned ridiculous.

So far I'm getting quite a bit of amusement for my buck here. The humor contained so far is self-evident, let's move on to the next bit

Wait...is this one of those TV shows? Am I being Punk'd? Where are the cameras? Let me see if I have this right: you saw an image on a forum that you didn't like because you thought it was smug, pretentious, and angsty to the point that you suspected the creator had a superiority complex...and then decided to make a post on another forum slagging said creator for these things and added (here's my favorite part) that the original image's way of thinking "doesn't get anyone anywhere"?

This thread is, hands-down, one of the funniest things I've seen this month. Thanks barth, this improved my mood at work quite a bit.

God, that image had me rolling. Sounds like something Steve Brule would say. "No more lonely times--just dreams now."

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. Guy who made it will probably look back and be embarrassed when he inevitably grows up. I have lots of those moments.

Heh, that picture is cute.

I think you misunderstand it.

In my mind, the cats aren't smug, they're happy regardless of whatever terrible truths may exist.

(I'm probably misquoting, I couldn't find the clip, but it was something like that)

The point is, accept painful truths and be happy anyway.

Also cats are always happy little dickheads at all times, so it adds another cute little level of comedy. I can just imagine my cat staring at me trying to make me depressed with a stupid grin on his face.

It works on two levels,

the first is a serious point that you aren't a super special Disney Prince/Princess that the universe will bend over backwards to give you your happy ending despite your flaws because frankly you don't really deserve it

The second is the juxtaposition of cute animal pictures quoting grim statements that provides a humourous subversion of the expected tradition of cute animal pictures with uplifting, encouraging quotes.

The message of the first is quite serious, and so mixing it with the second purpose which has no real meaning makes it a bit schizophrenic in it's purpose.
