Okay, so I sleep with the fan blasting in my face, i love the wind and i need a constant to fall asleep. The fan is all plastic, from the fan itself to the rack around it and is about 4 years old.

So one night I can't get to sleep I slowly slip my finger into the center peice of the fan. And it didnt hurt at all, but I noticed a small clue glowing when you press your finger down a little bit. It doesnt really matter which finger but either way you will see a small blue/purple glow. This seems to work best on the edges.

But I was wondering, what causes this, is it static electicity, am i magic, or is the fan magic. I'm guessing electricty but I dont feel a thing (i know it has to be strong to feel it) and also I see the electricy.

So any of you Escapists out there know excacly what is happening here. I wouldnt really encourage you to do it yourself but you can, I'm not hurt [but its not my fault if you do get hurt this way]. And also I've had 2 friends do this so i know im not some paranoid freak or something.

You have a lamp that is possessed by the ghost of...someone who glowed blue/purple. I don't know. But if that happened to me, I'd freak massively.

It's probably static electricity. If you get a camping roll mat and rub your hand across it in the dark it will also start to glow. However I assume that the motion of the blades spinning round is rubbing something just enough to produce a small amount of static. That is unless the Fan is getting really hot in which case it's shorting out and pissing electricity everywhere...

I'm guessing there is a build-up of dust on the fan blades and the motion of the air across the dust particles builds a static charge

where is the glow? in the back part of the fan (if its a generic oscillating fan, where the button to oscillate is) more than likely, when you put your finger on the blade or the center, it creates resistance, which causes the electric motor to work harder, causing a minor increase in the electric current and possibly jumping between the coils of the motor and the magnets which drive the blades.

Go to howstuffworks.com and look up electric motor.

It's SCIENCE!!! Acually the Electricy in the fan caused you blood to loose the oxygen content, Thus makeing it "Blu" Or so I think. +1 for bullshit science!

Heh. When I first read this, I thought you were talking about the little blue LED lights some computer fans have (mine has so many, it practically lights up my room). Post it on Youtube, and see what responses the *thoughtful* individuals on their comment boards give you. Also, this way we could actually see it- from your explanation, it sounds a little difficult to properly describe. I'm actually interested in learning the reason behind this.
