Rift!? Rift makes the same mistake as everquest 2 did and make everything look like its straight out of poser 4. Every little object looks like it was designed by a separate department and then all glued together.

Yeah, I played WoW for on and off three years, I know what the graphics look like, and no they're not breathtaking. Simple poly shapes with a slap of water colors without any normal and spec map is not what I consider pretty.

But the game still had me playing for three years, so it most have been doing something right.

As you said, it's not even done yet. And besides, who cares about the graphics? It's an MMO, it isn't supposed to look like Crysis...

I find them extremely pwetty. Also yes, MMOs are supposed to be cash cows which everyone and all their ancestors could run on anything found nearby and mostly you're not looking at them but the all the f-ing numbers that are flying on the screen. (healing, damage, threat, DPS and whatnot)

Okay the trailers in the OP weren't particularly ugly for an MMO. The writing however, Jesus even for Bioware that's bad, combined with the artstyle made them look more like a parody trailer than anything else.

However the space combat looks, good, if it's integrated well then it will actually give this game an edge over WoW. My opinon of SW:TOR has significantly increased. Perhaps EA might delay Bioware's inevitable death a little longer.

The game still need to be visually stimulating. A game has to switch environment about once every 15 minutes for people to stay "stimulated" a good example of this is diablo 2 and a very bad example of this is Hellgate london where you just went from one subway station to another with very little change.

It annoys me that people got so hyped about dead island because of that trailer, the game could be a zombie themed kart racing game, a business management sim about running a hotel in a zombie crisis, or some kind of choose your own adventure multiple choice zombie story for all i know. The trailer showed nothing about the game whatsoever, yet a boatload of people decided they would buy it from the moment they saw it.
I now want games that can be classified by the following:
zombie themed kart racing
a business management sim about running a hotel in a zombie crisis

You know, try to watch the movie, not just the thumbnail...

Not that I have ever owned one, but since when have MMO's ever been about the visuals?
Matrix Online..... Haaaaawt.
Grey, with hints of green, and virtually no art direction, is a pretty game to you?
Also, didn't Matrix Online get shut down a year or two ago?

OT: If graphics mattered, the PC would be the dominant platform, Crysis 2 sales would be insane, Minecraft would not be a success, and the DS would not be best selling platform of this generation.

I'm getting it, because it is 8 KOTOR's in one, and the Star Wars/Bioware fanboy inside me would kill me if I passed thit up.

You should never, ever, ever think that a cinematic gameplay trailer will tell you anything whatsoever about the game it is advertising.

Dead Island is apparently just a first person Dead Rising clone on an island, bad jokes, illogical weapons and all. It was a cool trailer but I had a feeling as soon as I saw it that I would be disappointed somehow.

OT. Polygon count and texturing doesn't bother me. Animation can be a big deal for me though, especially in an MMO where I spend so much time watching my character do the same thing, I'd like it to be an interesting thing. I chose my WoW character based on her animation set. Currently SWTOR looks like the ranged classes have quite a bit of delay in their animations, but anyone with a lightsaber looks pretty good. It may just be a matter of optimizing the engine between now and release or I may just have to avoid ranged classes. Either way I hope the game turns out well and it's fun to play because gameplay is the most important part in an MMO.

... You buy games for the graphics? Is that the only problem you can see with it?

And no, the cinematic trailers are supposed to sell you the game.

No. Cinematic trailers are meant to build hype. Gameplay trailers are meant to sell the game.

Anyone that buys a game for the cinematic alone doesn't know what they're buying.

And personally, I'm on the fence about SWTOR at this point. I'm definitely going to try it, but I can't predict whether it'll be good or not well... and unfortunately, my radar is leaning towards "mediocre". My radar is rarely wrong.

Yeah, I noticed that too, but if he won't bother watching that vid, I figured what's the point of arguing over SWTOR graphics....=/

Good video, the guy was biased towards The Old Republic obviously, but brought up a few good points. The facial and armor models DO look a lot better now that the game has been in work for a bit. I wish they'd stop showing that huge Conan PC guy though, he did and still looks terrible. >.>

How is that bad?

Sounds like you just don't like the game before you can even play it.

I was more disappointed by the hundreds of other reasons that this game will be bad.
Mainly:
The gameplay videos look identical to any other MMO out there
The space combat turned out to just be a rail shooter (even WoW has these)
Anyone who thinks a fully voiced MMO is a good idea hasn't played an actual MMO and doesn't know how much content an MMO needs to be constantly releasing to be successful, or they do not understand how expensive and time consuming it is to be constantly churning out fully voice acted content.

FFXIV is very graphically impressive.

FFXIV is also so incredibly bad that Square-Enix has yet to begin charging for it, in a desperate attempt to retain enough players to keep the game alive until they get a second chance to launch it with the PS3 version.

Graphics are far from everything in an MMO, as has been said numerous times already in this thread. Gameplay will matter more in the long run, I expect, particularly in this instance. Which may or may not help SW:TOR, since we have no idea how good that gameplay is going to be.

From the look of things... I'm not overly hopeful that this will be the major event that many people are expecting.

You target the enemy, you hit the ability on your action bar. Just like a million other already bug free (MMO launches are a fun thing if you have never experienced them), fully loaded with content MMOs out there.

Sweet, they are making the next starfox 64 in the SWG universe! Seriously though, the game is trying to step out of the tracks of WoW and I applaud them for it. I will buy the game, even if it sucks, just to support them for trying something else. I am so sick of WoW clones cluttering up the market. Even though I am playing rift I still see it as another wow with more character customization.
