For legitimate contenders, does anyone remember Ridge Racer? It was a big launch title for the PSone, one of the first high end 3D racing games that showcased the graphics capabilities of the new consoles over the old 16-bit generation. A quick google search shows some strong reviews too, including an 8.7/10 from EGM.

Try playing it today though and man is it horrible. Now that the graphics are badly dated rather than cutting edge, you notice the horrible physics (I can remember a friend spinning 360's while drifting around corners), extremely limited gameplay options & race tracks, and the biggest technical defect was the entire track had an invisible barrier preventing you from going offroad.
Good call sir, good call. You win, I dunno, a free camel ride at the next petting zoo that comes into town.

Final Fantasy 7

It just looks godawful now.

The characters all look like little pinatas and like something a 3rd grader would draw in 10 minutes.
It looks godawful NOW??? I thought it looked bad back in the late 90's. The in-battle animations weren't bad and the backgrounds looked, but I thought the sprites were baed, or at least jarring to how good everything else looked.

But anyway...Playing through Dark Cloud again; actions seem alot more clunky than I remember.

Earthbound. Dare anyone to say that it was good enough to force Nintendo to bring the sequels and original here in the US...
Wow, is this just a sad attempt at being a troll? Earthbound ages just as well as any SNES RPG, and in most facets, it ages even better because it created systems that sucked a lot of the once acceptable grind out of RPGs. (Like the instant death for weaker/surprised mobs)

And so far, not a single one of you has come up with a valid mention of a game that didn't age well. This doesn't mean going back they look old, or they are clunky with thier older UIs, not aging well means they are borderline unplayable these days because of changes we are used to. For instance, the complaints against Fallout 1 & 2. The control scheme still works fine, the stories are still good, the gameplay is solid. With that very same engine is Planescape: Torment, the single best written game ever. (Second place being Grim Fandango) Are you gonna try and say Torment aged poorly too?

You want a solid example? Go plug in your N64 and play Goldeneye again. It was great in it's day, now try to play it while supressing the urge to stab someone. It's not the inferior 3D graphics that ruin it, it's the tremendously bad control scheme and response time. You play modern day shooters and you'll be used to quickly aiming, console and PC players alike, but you will be unable to return to Goldeneye and stomach it for very long.

Actually I find the gameplay to be one of the few things that aged well.
The graphics only look nice in windowed mode where the resolution stays true, otherwise it's horribly pixelated.
Lack of voice-acting is also quite noticable, there is some but there are tons of text on top of that, they probably put a few full books in there.
And the gameplay, well it's old school RPG and not an action RPG, if you go in guns blazing your guys will die, alot, and you haveto fork over hell of a fortune to resurrect them.

How has deus ex not aged well?
Its still one of (if not) the best examples of the shooter with RPG elements that is becoming so common today.
<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.262850-Reviews-from-the-Backroom-Deus-Ex>Perhaps I can explain.

Picture's worth the caption beneath it.
Brb reinstalling Deus Ex.

Like many people, I'm gonna have to say FF7, and NOT for the graphics. I really didn't like the gameplay, and it took freakin forever to get some stuff done! I gave up on it long before the end of Disc 1

Many other RPGs haven't aged well. While I still enjoy every moment of Phantasy Star 4, the first three are very slow-paced, and the first one does that horrible thing where you get a crucial item but have no idea what to do with it. Anyone here who played the game remember what the NUTS do? Or the CRYSTAL? And who puts a shortcake store in the bottom of a monster-filled dungeon?

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 1 totally did not age well, while LoK: Soul Reaver 1 is a blast - even today - the first game wasn't so much fun now.

alot of games for the N64

that said Banjo Kazooie still holds up, Im not sure if Becuase of nostalga that I can look past the graphics (which still look cool form a style perspective) and apreciate the awsome gameplay now if only they made Banjo Kazooie 3....No nuts and bolts dosnt count....shut up it dosnt!

also if theres people around we could still have fun playing the orginal mario party, because its really just an electronic board game (and I win all the time)
Banjo still holds up, i played through it recently and its still brilliant.
If you desperately want better graphics download the XBLA version.

Some of its elements being used elsewhere doesn't make IT a bad game, its still very enjoyable.

Grand theft auto: Vice City, San Andreas, and 3

Sorry

They were good games, but after 4... Eh, they kind of became unplayable.
No...NO...NO!

I'm playing them now, they are BRILLIANT.
I believe you stand pretty lonely on your claim, so many games to choose and you pick the GTA games.
San Andreas is better than GTA IV "for sciences sake"

Better scenery, much more stuff to do, better storyline, bigger array of characters and much more happy visuals.
What made GTA IV SUCK was it constantly being groggy and muddy visuals.

Oh, this. Mostly because Vice City, San Andreas and IV, all kicked it up a few notches, so there isn't much sense in picking up GTA III over any of those.

Also: barely without exceptions: Any annually rehashed sports game.

age of empires. terribly outdated controls and user interface

If we're talking about gfx alone: all the early 3D games look worse than the 2D games that came before them. So most games on the N64 and the the PSone look shit.

The early 3d games. If Sony made the PS1 a 2d console like the Saturn and put its marketing machine to work there, we would have had many many gorgeous looking 2d games instead of 3d games that look shitty.

Segas Marketing didn't have enough power to really promote 2d gaming and even if they did, Segas marketing was shit.
The early 3d games are full of clipping issues and most of the textures look shitty.

I agree with this guy (Mr.K). Unless you're used to playing only modern RPGs which use their own rule system (which will be simpler to understand than any D&D one to the newcomer) then the gameplay is still brilliant. In form, function and ease-of-design it is hard to fault it. Sure it's not possible to deftly control all 6 party members unless you utilize the 'Pause' mechanic of the engine, but outside of multiplayer it arguably never was meant to be played all real-time.
But if you're used to the good autonomous AI of Dragon Age or only ever having to command 2 people (every other Bioware game since KOTOR) or no people at all (Witcher, Oblivion etc) then you may well find it slow to play and more of a strategy/RPG than action/RPG.

The graphics will never look pixellated so long as you get the Widescreen mod and a few other mods which allows the game to run at 1920x1200 (or whatever your res). Eg:

The hell you say... Jagged Alliance 2 is still the best game in it's genre. Not that there are many games in that genre, but still. I still play JA2 regularly.
So true, and I notice your avatar came from it lolol
