Yeah, today I rediscovered Ty the Tasmanian Tiger's OST on youtube.

I really forgot how epic it is. Every song is just gold and always good to listen to, if you like that sort of music of course.

So Escapists, what old games have excellent soundtracks and why? Examples are welcome, as always.

EDIT: I'll add some other great soundtracks for discussion value. ;P

Shadow of the Colossus.

Red Dead Redemption.

These are all I can think of atm

I agree with SotC having an awesome soundtrack, it really fits the game really well.

As for my own suggestion, first will be the original Age of Empires, I can still, to this day listen to all the of the amazing music for that game. Here's an example, called Egyptian Hymn:

Second will be the Hitman soundtrack, this one is from the first game, but in general Jesper Kyd(another Dane FTW), really put a lot of effort into the soundtrack and it shows:

The last one from me, at least for now, will be the Halo soundtrack, this one is the main theme from the second game. I've never been the biggest Halo buff, but the soundtrack is extraordinary:

*****, please. None of those games even remotely qualify as "Old". Don't know what planet(s) you guys are from...

Donkey Kong Country?

How about a little NES?

Or the best version of Bloody Tears?

Oh, and this.

Scrubs these days. Not knowing what games are old, classic, retro (Or whatever) and which ones simply aren't. Hilarity shall ensue.

Wow, that brought back memories. No matter how you look at it, Shadow of the Colossus was and remains a 'spectacular' masterpiece.

Jill of The Jungle was epic, not least because it was designed by Epic Games, way back in the DOS era before they started doing Unreal and whatnot. The tunes that accompanied some levels were pretty scary especially when you were being chased by those bees that you couldn't kill:

Similarly, Nitemare 3D was always pretty scary on some level, set in a Dr Frankenstein type house, the music always complemented the action:

Except for what happened when you beat the first level and the end level statistics music continued to play through the second level, lending it a bizarrely contrapuntal effect that allowed you to play without any sort of fear whatsoever:

And one more, this time from Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. The music for the second level always reminds me of X-Men & Mission Impossible. XD

Omega Boost.

No really, the EU/AUS version of Omega Boost has the BEST music in a game ever.

Second Game Boy Castlevania "Belmont's Revenge" deserves special mention, just for coming out of the damn Game Boy of all things.

Well, you can't really go past Mega man 1, 2 and 3 (I've listened to 9 and 10 but they are not old games.)
Also any music from Donkey Kong country is AWESOME. Retro Studios did a good job with the music in DKC Returns, but you can't beat DKC in all it's 16-bit glory.

Its only a wonder why Jet Set Radio Future hasn't turned up yet. I loved that little game, on the dual disc with my first x-box. I'm still playing it to this very day

Final Fantasy VII was truly a masterpiece. To this day I listen to some of the tunes (Tifa's Theme, Aeris' Theme, the opening song, etc.) and I get goosebumps. Same with VIII and its Liberi Fatali.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. GORGEOUS old-school music.

Metal Gear Solid 2. Need I say more?
