One piece, if thats old enough, think is im fairly new to anime so havent seen a lot of the older ones, though not much of a fan of berserker, but give it a look.

Oh actually, the original hellsings not bad, kinda average compared to the newer one, but thats kinda to be expected as the newer one has a lot bigger budget.

Berserk! It's terrifying and fairly messed up in places, yet still worth a watch, possibly.

It's hard to top Trigun though, it's a classic series. Outlaw star might appeal as well, fairly similar in some ways although not quite as good.

Well, I notice a lot of these suggestions are from when anime got a bit larger in popularity. Some suggestions have been redone (or are in the process of being redone) like Hunter X Hunter (previously mentioned), Hellsing (which is being released in a series of movies closer to the actual manga), Berserk (not berserker [ugh]) (which is currently being made into a 3 part movie series, no idea when it's supposed to be released).

Trigun is easily one of my favorite older anime series (it even had a movie come out semi-recently). Gundam is probably my favorite 'old' anime series, and there's a LOT of those to go through if you choose to. I also want to second the Outlaw Star suggestion (just make SURE you get the missing ep 24(?) (Hot Spring Planet Tenrei) episode if you watch it, as it explains some things that you would otherwise miss since the episode was nixed for the US audience when it was aired on TV. The original Ghost in the Shell movie was awesome, but it was re-released as a 2.0 version with some redone scenes (not to be confused with GitS: Innocence, which is Ghost in the Shell 2, basically). I would also REALLY recommend the Bubblegum Crisis series (and as a follow-up the AD Police Files series set in the same world).

They're making a Berserk movie? Yay!

Any idea if it will be set on the original episodes or on the Manga? Always found the beginning (prelude part) was kind of boring compared to the mildly psychotic later chapters.

Like Trigun for example. I've only watched the first few episodes, and they have me laughing at the insanity that goes on.
Just to give you a warning. Trigun undergoes a massive tonal shift about halfway through. It's still really good (in fact most people I know think the later episodes are better) but it certainly isn't funny towards the end.

As for why you prefer older series I can see two possibilites. 1. Styles change as time goes on, this is true for almost any medium, you just happen to prefer the styles that were popular back then. 2. Bad old shows disappear except as fodder for mockery on youtube, so you're only seeing the good old shows, what modern anime have you seen to compare them too? Because if you've only seen sub-par recent ones then it'd explain why you prefer the old.

Shit, I completely forgot about Escaflowne.

I absolutely adore that anime, absolutely brilliant, a must watch in my opinion.

Rurouni Kenshin. Pretty much the quintessential shounen anime.

If you liked Cowboy Bebop there's always Samurai Champloo (same folks).

I personally love One Piece, but since it's still ongoing that probably doesn't count.

Someone mentioned Monster. Great if you're looking for a fantastic, yet very realistic, story. One of my all-time favorites.

ANY anime with Yoko Kanno as the head of music is gonna be good.
Prove me wrong.

Ouch! I never thought I'd get the age where Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are classics.

Everyone put out very good lists.

Bubblegum Crisis and Gunbuster are absolute favorites.

Escaflowne, Evangelion, Slayers and Gundum Wing are all solid.

Oh My Goddess and Kimagure Orange Road if you like comedy romance.

I've tried watching Urusei Yatsura tv series (1981-86) but they haven't aged well. With few exceptions I avoid anything older than mid-80's.

I despised the fist of the north star movie from 1986. It made no sense and fits into my mid-80's rule.

I personally wonder if part of the appeal of classic anime is that it was hand drawn and colored. As much as love newer stuff like Naruto, I can't help feel the colors are off or unnatural. Add a crappy 3-d and/or unnecessary 3-d scene and it ruins it for me sometimes.
