The oldest ones I can play (as in: my laptop allows me to) are Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment.

*Points at avatar, wondering why anyone would doubt the awesomeness that is Lufia 2*
No one doubts the awesome that is Lufia 2. We value our lives to much.

Hmmm... I would say FFV but my disk is bugging out on me. Which makes me sad.

Castle Adventure; 1984.

I have a few text adventures for the original Apple, but I always sucked at them :p

The oldest RPG I can still enjoy is FFVIII, I don't care what anyone says the junction system was an amazing innovation that would have been more well liked if people had spent the time to play around with it for twenty minutes or so, the biggest complaint I hear is that it was "stupid and confusing" when it was really very simple with a basic layout. This is of course no defense for the rest of the game (most of which was silly and hard to follow) but messing with the junction system is still fun for me.
(raises glass) I'll drink to that.

As for the oldest RPG I play, it's something of a toss-up, the oldest overall I still go back to is Phantasy Star II, but FFVIII is the one I find myself coming back to the most often.

1988, baby.
I... I, remember that! I used to take NPCs from the guilds to the dungeons with the kobolds and get them killed so I could take their stuff.

I think it's baldurs gate.... but it might be Deus Ex... or FF7...

Whichever came first. I began gaming round then so I find it hard to go "retro". 2D aint my thing. But I still miss isometric games.

Dark Cloud 2. I've been playing this damn game for the past seven years, and I still can't put it down.

Well, I think there is nothing wrong with "classic" RPG mechanics. Simply put turn based "grind fests" work well, which is why they have survived so long. Not everyone enjoys them (like any genere), but then again no game is designed for everyone. People who knock them or feel they should be "stopped" because they aren't their thing annoy me a bit.

That said when I look at some of the games mentioned here I guess it shows my age that I don't think they are *THAT* old. For example Dragon Quest 8 is simply a last generation game.

To be fair, I'd probably say the oldest game I can still enjoy is "Rogue" and it's various iterations. I think Nethack can trace it's origins back like 20 years or so. That said I haven't played any "really old" games recently since I've mostly been focusing on stuff that has come out over the last couple of years.
