And yeah, judging by the amount of girls who posted here on teh infamus intarwebz, I'd say the myth of women not existing online has been busted.
Can I just explain that this 'myth' is like Wrestling being fake or Santa Claus not being real. Everyone over the age of 5 knows the truth of it (I hope), but when it's spoken in 1337speak, it refers to the mythology, rather than the myth itself.

See Chuck Norris, All your base, Over 9000 etc.

I play World Of Warcraft on U.S. Ravenholt (RPPVP) and I got my girlfriend to play it with me as well. From where I come from It is awkward for girls to play video games. I really wish it wasn't becuase they are a blast to game with.

Sadly this is not the case, seeing that a lot of people still amaze themselves over the fact that a girl just spoke to them in a WoW server, or hundreds of guys need to see a pic before they believe they're dealing with a girl, it doesn't seem to me that the whole internet community has totally embraced reality, which is that women DO in fact play the games they play.

It's not that guys don't believe a girl is playing unless they get a picture. They're just perverts who want something else to wank over, or to determine whether or not the girl is worth "hitting on".

Or, as I imagine in some cases... it is all said in jest anyway. Sort've like how I may pop out the ole "LOL!" to a friend, because that friends knows I would never use it in a serious manner... but if I were to go into a game and do that, to me is still holds the same sarcastic tone, but to others I might look like a right diptard.

Personally I find hitting on girls online pointless. Chances are the girl I actually meet online is in another country alltogethe, usually in the U.S. or something, so what's the point? If you're that desperate try online dating at the places where people actually go to to get a partner.

It's either that or men are sceptic because they've been fooled by a guy pretending to be a girl.

Sexist gamers are just essentially a bunch of geeks who cant take being beaten by someone without a dick. Plain and simple.
Well, no. We've gone over this with quite some detail recently, especially with 2 other threads related to females and insults. See: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.62227?page=1 ... and I can't find the other (original) one that the poll thread was based off of. I haven't actually searched for it... it's just not infront of me, and I'm feeling very lazy.

Huh...I think I met the writer of this piece for maybe 5 seconds at a developer conference back in January. The Escapist is published by a company called the Themis Group that produces a couple of publications and I didn't really key in to who I was talking to until Macris and a guy whose name started with an R realized I was press (or passing myself off as one, whatever).

I think the precise hesitation in my head for going up and chatting was the uncomfortable sensation that I was one guy in a sea of guys going up to talk with the only girl in the area, official reasons or no. It is hard to not get self-conscious or intensely aware of sexual overtones when the populations are so disproportionate. That perception the author notes, coming across as desperate, is precisely what a lot of people want to avoid.

Hi i just joined a few seconds a go to add my two pence to this discussion.

when i play online games, primary on Xbox live although i do play some PC games, i treat everyone, male of female, with respect and politlness. It only the F**Ktars who think jthat just because they play the game more, i should worship them as gods who annoy me

anyone remeber when the halo 3 beta came out? everyone was calling eatch other a noob just because their download finished 0.234581 seconds before everyone else's

anyway, i digress,
i met a female gamer on Guitar hero three once, but she also plays call of duty four, splinter cell double agent and team fortress and she can kick my ass at all of them.

i admit i'm kinda protective of her, but i think its because i'm an Englishman and a gentleman and most women seem to be unfairly targeted by the testosterone fueled meat heads that populate most severs.

lets face it, re spawning every few seconds isn't anyone's idea of fun and i want more women to play these games, they often come up with ideas the meatheads will not expect and hand us the victory. (not to mention they tone of conversations tends to improve.)

thanks for listening.

It just plain pisses me off how stupid people can be. I can't stand those fucking testosterone filled fuckwods (the same way I'm not too fond of estrogen filled girls) I have no faith in humanity as a whole, but I do have faith in humans (The individual) If that makes sense.

I can see how it would be annoying to actually be a girl in the gaming community but please try to understand us guys; we have all gone through the torture of having some "girl" come up to us in an MMO and ask us out, then we have to go through the ball-busting decision process; "what if it actually is an extremely hot girl that geniuenly enjoys casual sex?!" Now, if your a guy and your not extremely commited to a relationship (aka -marrage) and your balls haven't stopped functioning properly then that kind of scenario isn't the sort of thing you turn down easily. However, to the dissapointmen of millions males, its not true. Or atleast it hardly ever is.

The amount of guys that really do pretend to be girls is sickeningly huge. Hop on a game like Runescape for 5 minuits, guarenteed you will see some typical blonde pig-taled "girl" standing around with the most revealing suit of armor on "she" could get "her" hands on shouting "need bf" with a name like "SexxxyJulyboobs2001". Its actually more common to male gamers than seeing a real girl is since, as you know, you have to go through the whole identification process just to make sure there isn't a giant penis lurking under the desk.

More the merrier i reckon :) I play EvE and my CEO is a girl. I am fairly sure lots of girls play games very well.
Okay, while I have met and played with girls in a variety of games, EVE has not been one of them. Intriguing.

Nobody seems to shake the mindset that only guys can play online
No no... we're pretty much with that. It's the females who still seem to think they don't exist. I've mentioned how much I love irony before... but... but just one more time can't hurt.

I love irony.

Eh. I honestly think I'm more likely to find girls in MMOs than FPS or RTS. There's that bit of social networking involved, but I could be talking out of my ass. The major proof of that is I was at a party recently when a few female friends of mine were at also, and the two of them along with three or four others got into an argument about which was better, Everquest or WoW. I've never played either of them. Made me laugh.
Or maybe I've just matured without ever having to deal with the problem.

Haha it's one of the Internets rules.

I purposely pick a girl to fight with, so when the men say, "Awww, you picked a girl, you're going to lose. Why did you do that?"
I reply, "Because I wanted a Japanese school girl in her uniform to kick your arse."
Then I proceed to 'pwn' them. It never gets old.
