It's not subjective that the goal for everybody playing something like LoL or DotA is to try and win the game.
Yes, it is subjective. Or rather, what is subjective is that winning should one's main or only motivation.

There is no other way around it, if somebody goes into a game saying "I'm going to have fun by running around in circles all game", they ARE doing it wrong because they are stopping the other 4 people on their team from doing what they want to do (what the game was designed for no less).
See above. And that's an attitude I have a problem with. Maybe I'm more focused on seeing what new trick I can pull in the lane, and seeing how the exchange works, try to outsmart the opponent in a new way; the nexus is just an afterthought.

And yes, I get rather annoyed at people telling me how I should be playing my games. If I play team based multiplayer, you can bet I'm not going to just screw around, cause as opposed to some who enjoy making it not fun for others, I don't want to ruin the experience for other people. That'd be rude and obnoxious.

But I'm still not going to obsess about winning.

I guess we mostly agree then :p
I wouldn't say I obsess about winning, it's just that most competitive games aren't fun to lose, because it's just frustrating when you get roflstomped. Sometimes they are fun to lose because it's a very close game, but more often than not one team will clearly have the advantage very early on.

I've no problems with people trying out new things either, that's what helps you improve/helps the metagame progress, but it's often good to do that in non-ranked environments so it's not detrimental to somebody's rank that they have worked hard for etc.

"fun"?... there's a game with that?

i usually enjoy a challenge, i would not call it fun, hell i don't usually ever use that word to describe anything since i was 16.. but i do enjoy things. Competitive games can be enjoyable if your in the right range of difficulty. In the middle i'd say. you don't wanna get destroyed every round, but you also don't want to be killing puppies with no difficulty at all. it's really hard to find this middle ground in games... but when you do, it's heaven.

I've often been accused of not playing games "for fun" because I utterly destroy the competition.

If you're not playing a competitive game to win, why are you playing it at all?
Utterly destroying random kids in pub games? Is that supposed to mean something? Well... i guess gratz on being the one eyed man mate.

Why do you play competitive games if not to win?
What is this mythical "fun" property I've yet to see defined?
What makes a game "fun" for you?
- To kill, in most random pub games i just play to do that, not to win.

- No idea.

- A competitive game? Deep tactics and strategies, and a high skill cap that allows my sorry ass to get better with time.

Overall, if you want to really get good and try to do interesting shit in team based PvP, get a team; they dont need to be good, just dedicated and with mics. Anything else is just for the lulz.
