The issue of walking in 3D games have changed over the years. First, there is the issue with control pad versus mouse and keyboard. When I first tried Quake, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D for the PC, I used a mouse + keyboard and had no problem what so ever. In fact, I've never had any real trouble walking in 3D.

There might be some misunderstandings: The control pad for the Nintendo 64 was the first controller that dealt with 3D graphics, if I'm not mistaken(?). I've recently played Super Mario 64 again and even though the controls are great, the camera is nonsense, and is always in the way. This way controlling poor Mario, is difficult. My girlfriend doesn't wanna play Goldeneye or Perfect Dark because the "position" in the FPS 3D world combined with the awkward controls.

I one time played Team Fortress Surfing high, it was lots of fun!!! But also hard because I tried to surf backwards which is very difficult

My ex-girlfriend couldn't figure out dual thumbsticks. I tried to teach her how to play Modern Warfare and it was an absolute disaster; moving on two planes at once just blew her mind, for some reason.
Same thing happened to me when, after being a lifetime PC gamer, I tried halo for the first time on a console. It didn't take that long to figure out, but for a while I was all kinds of uncoordinated.
