It depends. I think it would be adequate if someone really thought of their character as a separate entity from themselves, something that happens quite often. But if their character is one of the ones they see as themselves, then they might want to look into transgenderism.
As for your friend who RPs a sexually active female while he's married. That's just odd.

I generally prefer to play as female characters, both in video games and pen and paper role-playing. I often feel that I can relate more to female characters, and tend to act very protective of them. For example, I'm more likely to go out of my way to get my female character clothes that don't reveal too much skin.

It's also a not-so-secret (in my online social circles) fantasy of mine to be lesbian woman, although that doesn't in any way mean that I'm unhappy or uncomfortable with being a man.

But, yeah, I've said too much. >_>
