Just saw the following video, and I must say it made me thinking.

What is your take on this video, and about this game. Please don't call this game a hat simulator, or at least try to refrain yourself from doing so, because from my experience there are at least 5 people who are not obsessed with hats for every chronic trader (most of them are noobs though =( ).

I think tf2 is awesome.
Even more so considering I actually traded a couple of hats (I forget how many, it was a while ago maybe 5?) for 3 games on steam, pretty sweet considering I payed nothing for em, earned em just by playing the game.

Bitcoins, I can see a future for.
Or at least I can see a future for whatever becomes of it.
Virtual currency is definitely a plausible outcome in the (far) future, and the "credits" you see in sci-fi products are pretty much an allusion to that.

Unusual hats will likely die alongside Team Fortress 2, whenever that day comes.
Unless, of course, they get carried over to the "next generation". But at the end of the day, they are like those hats that your grandmother owns that are probably pretty rare so you steal them and put them on Craigslist for whatever insane price you can come up with. Or you can trade it for some other bloke's hat. In short, not really currency at all but rather some placeholder for.

Then there's the issue for who it appeals to.
Bitcoins can pretty much effect everybody, Unusuals mostly effect TF2 players.
The earlier can explode into some universal meta-currency, while the latter is more secluded with it's usage.

That's pretty much my opinion on the matter and the issues I can see with 'em.

TF2 is awesome, and what kind of marked it created "by accident" is quite remarkable. But hats aren't even a currency for every TF2 player. Some of us want them more for fun or for prestige than for trading. The actual value is different to everyone. There is no consensus since it's reliant on the personal taste of whatever interested buyers that are left.

So they are priced by rarity and popularity. An unusual is mostly priced after how popular their effect and the hat itself is, and how many and which game classes can wear it. You'll ask other unusual traders, who will give you prices that can go far apart. Actually selling for these prices is a whole different story. There's a lot of luck, timing, barter and patience involved. Six months later, that price can be completely outdated.
Even pricing guides are merely guidelines, what you really get can be far over or below what they say. So you can't pinpoint the value of anything.
A game update (like the recent "hat retirement" after which some hats won't be dropped anymore) can extremely affect the value of your hat, or devalue it without a warning. Getting an unusual is like a lottery, and every one that is dropped will affect the market to some degree.

Now I don't claim to know everything about TF2 trading, I'm not nearly enough into it for that. But still, would you trust this as a currency, when you don't have time and desire to get balls-deep into this market? A currency that has no pinpoint value, let alone security? It's like a lottery, and hats may be more like a stock than some dollars in cash. A stock that some people only want because it makes them look badass when worn on their heads.
Bitcoins I can see future for, since people have long been talking about digitalizing money.

What's wrong with people calling it a hat simulator? I've mostly heard it as a term of endearment, not a usually a negative criticism of the game itself. And so what if people do think that's a negative? That doesn't mean you aren't allowed to enjoy it.

As far as the video, my Internet connection is too weak to run it, but I see it's from the PBS Idea Channel, which first of all I find pretty cool. Secondly, I suppose they're talking about the kind of market hats have created in-game, which is also cool. I love TF2, and I consider the hats to be a major plus but certainly not the only reason I play it. And when I play I'm spending most of my time thinking about the gameplay rather than trading and/or obtaining things. There's some stuff I've sought out, but that isn't what I spend the largest portion of my time doing.

But everybody can play their own way. I think that's why TF2 is still popular and renowned--the hats and the gameplay don't interfere with each other. You can have one or both, it's whatever you want to do.

I hate how seriously people take the "economy" in the game (so I actually give away valuable items away for free), but even I have to admit hats have an effect on me too. If I see a player weiring either no hat or a Gibus, I assume they are new and probably crappy. I wasn't even aware I thought that way until some of my fellow clan-members started not wearing hats or misc items. I'd be surprised when some plain looking Scout or Soldier killed me. Then I'd see who it was and think, "You bastard! You tricked me!"

Yeah. Kind of weird. Kind of stupid. But it's a thing.

During the halloween event last year I got a hat with the purple flame effect. Sold it for $150US. I'm all for this because I bought the key with refined metal. TF2 actually paid me for all the time I spent playing it, as far as I'm concerned.

I'll be honest, I wear the Gibus specifically when my battle medic friend is pocketing me as soldier. We tend to steamroll entire teams so we both equip it and enjoy the rage in chat while we spawn camp the enemy.

TF2 is an amazing game, will play forever, luv.

But, as said in the video, Bitcoin can buy a lot of dosh on the web, but TF2 hats can only buy other game items (sometimes even games themselves) and the occasional big bucks from the official trading post. TF2 has an amazingly unique, and in my opinion the best, economy of any game that I know of.

I have 2 unusual hats and a ridiculous amount of random hats/misc items (earbuds included) but this is because of how much I love TF2. Truthfully I'm not much of a trader but when trading first came out I was very interested in it.

My backpack is pretty much full and I don't play enough to justify getting the upgrade for it though. Unfortunately I'm afraid my unusual hats will continue to not be used as much as they used to.

I'm just waiting for Dota 2 to be released so I can trade my vintage timekeeper for a game or 2 (as long as the price for it stays steady or goes up)

I played the game a lot. I collected quite a few hats, constantly changing favorites and making my own "sets." Have gotten a LOT of people (read: traders) friending me just to ask about them. Even traded a nice one I had collecting dust in my backpack for awhile away for a couple games. Now my fiancé has enjoyed making up her own collection, stealing a good chunk from mine. Good times!

Never took away from the game itself in my opinion. Just made people much more distinguishable while playing. Some of the weapons on the other hand...

Didn't watch the video but I have to say anyone who takes hats or the "economy" seriously are idiots. Some guy gave me like 8 weapons for a couple hats I had but didn't like. Of course he thought I was stupid for it but really, who came out on top in that one?

I don't assume anything about a player based on their hat. I wear my Gibus sometimes just to confuse other players when a Gibus wearer is dominating them.

I choose the hats that look the coolest on the characters, rather than the rarest.

For me hats are hats, I'm proud of the genuine's that I own but I'm not going to go into the trading business.

I have bills hat but that's only because I wanted to play LFD2. I'm not too into the hat scene. I'm decently good at the game too.
