I've noticed this before, although it is interesting. I think it is because: Orange = explosions, blue = mystery. No surprise posters are blue and orange, then.

My guess is that blue/orange is the best to subconsciously display conflict or opposition.

orange/blue=sun-day/moon-night
red/blue=fire/water

Sometimes the lead character stands in the middle, as if having to decide, or controlling, the two opposing worlds. Other times the main hero and anti-hero stand in their respective colours, ready to play their part.

I have not seen most of those movies, so this is just my unresearched guess.

Hm. That's kinda cool. And I shall most likely be seeing it everywhere now (Hang on, msn conversation tabs in the taskbar are orange when someone talks to you and blue when idle NOO)

Oh well, I like blue and orange.

*Looks at his signatures on other forums* Oh dear... I do it too!
You also have an orange Excellent Topic -badge next to a blue Webby Badge.
Do you have an urge to look at my profile page for hours?
Nah, they were under your avatar. It seems you got a new badge so the blue one's not there anymore.

And that's horrible! OH THE HUMANITY!

... maybe not.

Actually I only changed the badge order, I've had that one for a while.

I just think that its because they're appealing colors. Orange is a "warm color" and blue is a "cool color", or at least that's what I learned in art class.

Never noticed this before, but now I can't stop seeing it. It really does seem to be prevalent. The two colors do look awesome together, though.

I'm genuinely going to look out for this forever now. Epic, truly epic.

Blue is possibly the most common color in the world, thanks to the sky, so it's a familiar, friendly color. Orange is less common but still well known and not feared.

Blue and orange are complimentary colors, and when put together, they pop.

Blue suggests cold, and orange suggest heat.

The people who make ads are inclined to copy/rip off the work of others.

I believe that these factors, all taken together, account for the prevalence of orange and blue in current ads. What do you think?

I think I'm going to have to disagree with the OP. It's easy to see one blue and orange poster and add that to the growing list, but it doesn't compare to the sheer volume of movies that are out right now. Check out the IMDb top ten chart [http://www.imdb.com/chart/] and see for yourself (you can click on the title of each movie to open the page, and then the picture in the upper left corner to see a bigger version of the movie's poster). At the time of writing this, the top ten grossing movies currently out are:

1) Twilight (groan)
2) The Blind Side
3) 2012
4) Planet 51
5) A Christmas Carol
6) Precious
7) The Men Who Stare at Goats
8) Couples Retreat
9) The Fourth Kind
10) This is It

Some of these use some blue, and some of them use some orange, but none of them seems to have a predominant blue AND orange scheme. The OP's list is impressively comprehensive, but it's just a cherry-picking of coincidences.

Well it was never going to be a 100% and that's always a given. Nonetheless a majority of posters and themes does pose this interesting duality of colours and while it's most likely nothing more than just catchy/subtle art tones it is still, quite interesting!.

You're right, it is interesting. Buuuuut...not a majority. At least not on that top ten list; I'm too lazy to go looking for a broader sample.

Umm, ok. Let me put it this way; a "Top 10" list has no bearing on this topic whatsoever. Such things merely lists movies that have fallen into some marking criteria (Tickets sold, money made, review favorites, etc etc).

My op is on a completely different matter, I am not comparing popularity of movies or posters of popular movies or movies with particular posters. I am merely making an observation on the amount of movies that already have the aforementioned colour patterns and therefore has no bearing on future or current charts, top 10 lists or Billboard rankings.

It doesn't even matter if its a majority or not because it's not a statistical comparison. It's merely an inspection into what is and why.

Blue and orange aren't the only hollywood fetish colours. Has anybody else ever noticed that these days the titles for comedies on posters/DVD covers are almost always red or at least partly red. Especially if its made in the last 15 years or stars eddie murphy

For example:
Superbad
Old School
the Hangover
van wilder
American pie
super troopers
Airplane
fargo
the boat that rocked
in the loop
year one
zombieland
even Monty Python and the Holy Grail was partly red

Is there just something funny about red or is the blue/orange thing just making me lose my mind?

It's a conspiracy!

Maybe something that some scientists have figured out that bright colors draws attention.

Well, I don't get the orange bit, but if I remember correctly, blue is typically the first colour your retina registers/distinguishes, and as such it's a colour most people are initially drawn to. As such, it's universally the "most popular" colour out there.
