I know this has been done before but I wanted to get an updated opinion from you guys.
What game(s) on the ds would you take along on an 12 hour flight?
Hard to make recommendations without knowing your gaming tastes.

If I was on a 12 hour flight I'd actually be looking towards various DS games that were badly designed for "on the go" play but you wanted to mess with anyway. Things like say the Dragon Quest games (IV & V) that kept the rather draconian save system (only in town churches) or whatever since you have time where your just going to sit down and play for hours.

Games that are well designed for on the go play (15-20 minutes in a waiting room is enough to enjoy a quick session) are not always the best for long bouts of play, especially seeing as some of them are either very short, or very repetitive.

That said my personal favorite games for the DS are probably "Devil Summoner", "Strange Journey", and "The World Ends With You". Of which the second one is probably the best for long sessions due to how it saves, where the other two have liberal save systems where you can pretty much play a few battles, and then shut it off rather quickly without having to get committed.

For action games, I actually thought "Dementium II" was not bad once you get used to the controls, however it's very short. Shouldn't take 12 hours to do.

Mega Man Zero Collection - sure, the 4 games in the series can be beaten in less than an hour, but that doesn't count all the times that you will die and reload your save. Plus, you'll probably want to play through each difficulty setting at least once.

With solid controls, challenging difficulty, and kickass weapons and special moves, you can't go wrong with the Zero series. Equipping the Z-Sabre and Shield Boomerang is like playing as what I like to describe as "Jedi Ninja Robot Captain America"

Easy gives you the fun of playing as an overpowered Zero who pretty much can't die (the game even covers spike pits for you so that they're safe to walk on).

Normal is much harder than easy (you WILL die. A lot). The difficulty is variable, as you can choose to upgrade yourself, or take advantage of bosses' elemental weaknesses.

And Hard truly tests you by taking away your best means of dealing damage from afar (charged buster shots). Since you can't charge your buster or saber, your other ranged weapons (Chain Rod in MMZ2 and Shield Boomerang) become viable alternatives. the Shield Boomerang becomes a useful projectile by comparison (it's slow, but it's the only thing you can charge, so it's your most powerful weapon). And your 3-hit sabre combo and charged slash are taken away, so you can't take massive amounts of a boss' health bar when they stand still for a few seconds.

Maybe try to get a Fire Emblem game, or the Pokemon games. Actually, just get one of the old Fire Emblems on the Gameboy Advance. It's worth it. I played that like a million times.

Wouldn't it run out of batteries?

Regardless, Scribblenauts and a dictionary is all I need, see what they have in there.

Chrono Trigger is an obvious choice. There's also:

FFIV - My favorite FF game, but actually one of the more difficult ones, particularly the DS remake

358/2 Days - Not the best KH game ever, but if you've got nothing else to do, it will keep you interested. Although if you haven't played Kingdom Hearts II before... this one will be confusing as hell.

Either Legend of Zelda - It's Legend of Zelda

Meteos - An old game, yeah, but it's a puzzle game. Puzzle games are addictive. You can probably find it used somewhere.

Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver - I don't care that you hate Pokemon, you will learn to love it over a 12 hour flight.

Chrono Trigger.

Or Fire Emblem, but go for the original game boy version. I cannot endorse the soulless creature that is the DS version.

Your dedication to retro is admirable. You must either be a hipster, 50 years old, or an alien.
Ha! I wish. I am a 15-year old, semi-sane, humanoid individual.
I almost envy you now. 12 hours on Tetris. I had to make a biannual flight from Hong Kong to New York until I just moved here and I always had to bring a box full of gameboy advance games just to cover the first half of the flight.

Either Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days or Picross.
Kingdom Hearts because it has a nice, long story mode, and Picross because it's really addictive and fun

Peggle is on DS... Is that actually a good game or is it just really addictive like most casual games?
I'm not sure I understand the difference you're describing. Peggle is a very simple game, which is what makes it good for flights. I personally sometimes get so frazzled by traveling that I can't devote much attention to a game, so Peggle is great. It keeps your mind just occupied enough to pass the time, but doesn't require all that much concentration. It's also just a lot of fun.
Sorry, I should be clearer... I was tired.
I find most casual games I play, I do so just because it's so simple. Once I stop I don't want to play it again, but it's quite hard to stop... I don't know, maybe it's just me. Still, I might get Peggle on DS as it seems to me casual games would be quite suited to a handheld.
