No... not like THAT you pervs...

I encountered someone who unfortunately has one paralyzed arm who told me he used to play video games a lot as a kid when he still could. I mentioned that there were probably lots of PC games he could play one handed with just a mouse.

Unfortunately my mind blanked at that point and about the only game that came to me was Civilization V. So I come to you fellow escapists to see which games I could recommend to those with only one working hand (and for those too lazy to dual-wield the mighty keyboard).

Any suggestions would be nice, though preferably from this millenium.

Runescape.

If you only use your mouse you can just disable chat. Works perfectly because you don't have to talk to any of the complete retards that play.

I managed to find a list of games that can be played with one hand. Take a look: http://www.giantbomb.com/one-handed-games/3015-1790/

A lot of Wii games can be played with one hand and there are some pretty awesome Wii games.
Can Resident Evil 4 on the Wii be played like that?

All the Infinity Engine games (Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale), then their successors like Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR will probably also be completely doable by mouse.
Oh and a very recent addition Divinity: Original Sin, excellent game that very much takes after the ones already mentioned.

Of course I am talking about top down slow burning deep as hell RPG games, if your friend is an instant gratification gamer then mentioning these is completely pointless because they will not lead you by the hand to promise land.

Basically any turn based game out there, puzzle games etc.

Also, there are MMO mouses with numerous controls on them which could be used to play many other games with one hand. Not ideal situation, but workable.

There are also single handed game controllers.

That's gotta be one hell of a workout though...
I second this, because I didn't know you could even use the keyboard at first, and played for months mouse only, confirming that you won't even need one.

If he gets a Razer Naga or another mouse with a few thumb buttons it opens a few possibilities. In addition to programs which allow remapping keyboard keys to those mouse keys, there are games which support multiple mouse buttons from the get go. Diablo 3 is an action RPG and can be played entirely by mouse given 4-6 bonus thumb buttons.

The Infinity Engine games would be my pick. They're playable entirely with the space bar and left mouse, so you'd need to rebind the pause function to one of the mouse buttons, but apart from that there shouldn't be any trouble.

Pretty Much any strategy game can be played as long as you don't mind not using hot keys.

Also, Jamestown. It's an indie shoot 'em up game that has one of the control options being mouse-only (with keyboard/gamepad local co-op).

Assuming he has a mouse with some macros on it he's got a whole selection of classic RPGs. Just set one of the buttons to be the spacebar, maybe the I key or something and he can play anything from Baldur's Gate to Dragon Age 2 with no major trouble.

Most RTS games would be contenders, though he wouldn't be fit for competitive play since he couldn't use the keyboard shortcuts he should still be able to play the story campaigns successfully.

I second the recommendation for Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Fallout 2 etc.) and Divinity Original Sin (which is fantastic).

I would also recommend 4X space games that work well with pause. The most recent I have played is Distant Worlds: Universe which I found fantastic (note that it is 2D in terms of graphics, I don't mind myself since I prefer gameplay to graphics.)

Finally I recommend a Razer Naga: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-naga/

Having a numpad on the mouse might help with increasing the number of games that can be played one handed.

One Finger Death Punch. Only needs one finger..really!

Then there is FTL, Tales of Maj'Eyal, Gnomoria, Craft the world, Rimworld, Legend of Grimrock, Frozen Synapse...

Aaaand of course most grand strategy/4X games series; Master of Orion, Sword of the stars, Space Empires, Galactiv Civilizations, Civilizations, Distant Worlds, Stardrive, etc.

I'm not a 100% sure they can all be played with only one hand..hmmm, but I think so.
Someone is sure to point it out if I'm mistaken.

Have fun gaming!

Plants vs. Zombies. As far as I can tell it doesn't even have the option of keyboard shortcuts, so it's totally mouse-only (unlike other RTS games where keyboard shortcuts give you a significant advantage).

Team Fortress 2. Play a Pyro.

The Aurora Engine games, KOTOR and NWN and such, would be.. doable with just a mouse? But having sunk many thousands of hours into NWN, you really want keyboard control; the click to move setup isn't particularly precise. Possible, but I'd honestly caution away from them, the mouse control is that bad for moving.

RTS style games, things like Warcraft, Starcraft, or Dawn of War would be at least playable with just a mouse, even if they're at their peak with hotkeys. I don't like doing product recommendations for things I don't own, but maybe show him the Razr Naga, or one of the other various gaming mice out there? They come loaded with a whole mess of thumb buttons, such that you could very well replace most hotkeys that a lot of games would need. MOBA style games, RTS, something like a Naga would open up a vast amount of possibilities - maybe even certain shooters, depending on the individual game in question.

Shadowrun Returns is built in the same engine that XCOM is, or at least, an absurdly close version of it, such that it also would function well enough in one handed playing. As would the version of Chrono Trigger available for Android (Don't have an iOS device to check), which is easily handled with just a thumb. Dragon Age: Origins would be something to look into as well, for the same reason as the Infinity and Aurora Engine games; you pause so often in combat that you have plenty of time to control the game with a mouse.

I'd offer up World of Warcraft, also. He may not be able to get into raiding very easily (though, again, one of those keypad mice..), but there are a fair number of MMOs that are slow enough as to allow mouse control. FFXIV is one of them, it's built with a 2.5s GCD, with the effect (and intent) of slowing down combat and making each cooldown a tactical decision. EVE Online is well known and derided for its spreadsheet gameplay, but it's still mostly mouse driven - I haven't played it in like five years though, so I can't offer a realistic estimation as to playability, and even then only in the relatively low tier of gameplay I got into (Once I got my Dramiel the rest of the game was pointless), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the better options.

Visual Novel type games are out there, those generally require no complex interactions. Admittedly most of them are of a.. less than wholesome nature, but still.

Minecraft, maybe. Depends on number of thumb buttons. 2-3 should suffice.

Most of the older, 8-Bit RPG type games are generally set up to emulate on a PC using just the arrow keys and Enter or Shift or some such, so those would be a good choice. I can't recall if FF8's PC port can do it, but it wouldn't surprise me an awful lot. By that token, Audiosurf would be a thing too, since it's just using arrow keys.

If I can think of any more I'll post again. But dredging through my Steam library isn't sparking many thoughts. Hearthstone, maybe?
