Sarcasm, I'll play along what game is this from? (if it is actually from a game I am willing to /facepalm myself with a brick in shame)
Sarcasm, haven't you heard about the word? It's Warhammer! End sarcasm.
Ahh, so that's why it is WH40K. Ok what kind of brick?

(note my ignorance is due partially due to the fact I'm with Blizzard on the whole Warcraft=Warhammer, Startcraft=WH40k thing)
Rofl, what? Dude, it's long been established that Warhammer came first o.0 I mean, I'm no rabid fan boy of either, but that's a fact.

How's about the 7 hour war in which the Combine subjugated humanity?

Or the 7 Day war in which Israel kicked EVERY neighbouring countries' asses in self defence
before forcing them to sue for peace? Oh wait, that one actually happened, my bad...

I know but it's the whole "They just ripped it off!" Okay so the first one or two games may have been similar but especially with the Warcraft franchise I think they've differed themselves enough to have everyone shut up already.
Oh yeah, I'm not arguing against that - both game sets (or whatever) have indeed vastly changed over the years. Thing is, you were the one who brought it up again, stating the same stupid Starcraft fanboy line (whether you're a fanboy or not is irrelevant for that statement to be true) that is not only aggressive and anal but also factually incorrect. So I corrected you.

Yeah, sad thing is I'm enough of a fanboy to know that and not argue, but I have to hide just incase the 9 year old subspecies of fanboy finds out where I live.

Speaking as someone who enjoys both universes, of course... but Warhammer/40k came first. (1989 in the case of 40k.)

I agree with Gabe, from what I've seen Warhammer is alot like WoW so it's just your preference on story and whether graphics are a big deal.

Actually the war that takes place in Pokemon: Ruby,Sapphire and Emerald is quite interesting because with a little re-imagining you could turn into a full-fleshed RPG about a war between The Land and Sea.

It's amazing how apt penny arcade is - whatever the argument or situation, they've either already been there or they probably will. heh.

There's some talk about WoW and Warhammer and I can't control my fanboyism anymore. WoW copied Dark age of Camelot which was made by the designers of Warhmmer online. And Starcraft copied Warhammer 40k. I dunno what Diablo ripped off but I'm willing to bet it wasn't an original idea.

P.S. Just because its a rip of doesn't mean I'm not super stoaked for it.... come on D3 come out allready...

Like someone already said, The Horus Heresy from WH40K. The setting, the amount of fluff already written on the subject, the artwork, I love everything about it.

The Pendulum Wars and the war with the Locust in Gears have a certain allure for me.

Also, while it's not a war per se, the fall of Rapture and such before you arrive in Rapture during Bioshock is pretty cool.

What most people dont know is that the first warcraft was inteded to be a warhammer game, but they didnt get the rights, so they changed the name (VERY CREATIVE) and made a few twist here and there...

Oh I love this arguement,

Yes admittedly Warcraft 1 was similar and It's popularity must of made the Warhammer guys kick themselves then you have Warcraft 2 which twisted even more and showed alot of separation from Warhammer and beginnings of a new, very immersive world and then you get Warcraft 3 which is very, very unique when compared to other Fantasy settings of the time (off the top of my head: 1. Orcs aren't evil and actually quite honourable however they were corrupted by a Demonic force 2.Said demonic force was also in the control of the Undead leader it's usually either just Undead or demons. 3. Humans and Elves are not all paragons of virtue) and now we have WoW which on face value isn't all that different to some of the earlier MMO's but if you look and listen carefully you see the gems that prove to you your in the world of Azeroth, and now in a version of "look who's copying who now" The Warhammer people(don't know the companies name) also made a MMO and one that simply put is an upgraded version of WoW with Warhammer setting.

(Sorry if that was a bit ashish of me, but it's annoying when you hear Warhammer fanboys spout that over and over again

Not only did you try to be an ashish, but you turned out to be a pretty uninformed person too, Mythic's Warhammer Online is NOTHING like WoW. Just doing a wiki search might help you a little bit.

And yeah, it's a FACT that Blizzard's Warcraft and Starcraft are ripped-off of the Warhammer universes.

I think it's hard to really judge the wars in games. World War II is certainly the most used period of conflict for video games, and the real life scope and scale of the destruction wrought during that conflict are simply staggering. It was a war that raged across three separate continents, a war that utterly changed the balance of power in the world, a war that caused immense destruction in most of the major cities in Europe. It's estimated that 100 million people died in the war and a single battle cost the lives of more than two million people - numbers that mean almost nothing because of their sheer size. Sure, many of the games that take their cues from the conflict are bland, uninteresting copies of other games but the fact of the matter is World War 2 is by far the largest and costliest conflict in human history, making it a shoe in for the "greatest war" portrayed in video games.

While there are a great many fictional wars in Video games, very rarely are the events and lore of those wars even notable. Warcraft's wars are perhaps the most well known and that certainly counts for something. Starcraft's conflict is still being played out in spite of the fact the game was released more than a decade ago - again this has to count for something. It doesn't matter if many of the ideas on those games came from another source - they managed to capitalize on the ideas far better than their precursors ever did.

Besides, as much as I liked WAR, I am not going to stand here and say it was appreciably different than WoW. Yes, the focus was on PvP, yes the art direction leads to a different atmosphere - the game still uses most of the conventions of MMO's that WoW for all intents and purposes made standard. I liked WAR better in general, but that owes more to the fact that I enjoy killing players far more than I enjoy grinding out quests than to any major changes to the game's mechanics.
