Online Activation is rediculous

Well I've had quite a few games recently which have required online activation to install them, this wouldn't bother me so much if it weren't for the fact that I live in university accomodation, which means that I'm behind a proxy. The proxy stops you from playing games online (except browser based ones), and also stops games from connecting to the internet, this means that ANY game with online activation is a no go for me, like any steam game (portal for f***s sake) and I think this is ridiculous, there are many people out there I'm sure which have a decent PC, but for whatever reason can't get online, and this drives me insane, why deny them playing great games? And yes I know that it's supposed to stop people from pirating them, but anyone with torrents can say that it doesn't because there are plenty of no-steam cracks for most games AND other ways around the online activation.

Any opinions? Agree/Disagree?

EDIT *ridiculous* sorry about the typo in the title.

Agreed. It's just another annoying thing that benefits the company, rather than the consumer.

Agreed, to stop piracy they are willing to make it a much easier option. They don't care about the consumer, they just focus on profits and ways to increase them, by following that path, royally fucking themselves.

What kind of backwards, paranoid, "itz a serees of toobz!" kind of university do you go to? At mine all you have to do is register whatever device requires direct Internet access with the network and you're good to do whatever the hell you want.

This also seems like a good place to extol upon the virtues of consoles. . .

Totally agreed on that one, considering that I'm doing a game development course you'd think that they'd let you, I mean I could argue that playing games online is homework.

Do you happen to be Belgian as well? And studying in Gent, living in a dorm?

I'm facing the exact same problem. Can't play online, except when I create a VPN connection outside uni itself, but that effectively DOUBLES the lag of the already-shitty internet. Playing CoD4 with a ping of 400 is pretty much impossible.
Only games who use TCP/IP connections work (such as Guild Wars and WoW), but that sort of connection is slower. And as a few of you may or may not know, in GW PvP, even a 1/16th of a second can decide the outcome of an entire match.

No I'm living in the UK, but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has crappy proxy problems in dorms, and I might look into setting up a VPN connection, as that would at least mean I could install them, then set steam to offline mode.

That's not the point. I, for example, have no desire to expose my shiny new laptop to the internet, because getting a virus off it will be impossible, and because I don't like all the gobshite autopatch features.

Same here, plus it works with my consoles. My roommate didn't want to go through the trouble of doing that, so he just got the verizon wireless card.

Its worse when you know you will have no internet for about a fortnight, go out, buy a brand new game and then realise you cant play it.

get a proxy programme. Pingfu or Proxyfier are both good. Lil extra cost but my uni had 3mb connection speed so getting past the firewall was worth it :-D

So I've got a http tunnel program and provider, but I was wondering, will I get into any trouble using it? Because I really don't want to get chucked off the course because of this, anyone know whether this will breach terms of usage?

Don't browse dodgy sites or download daft things and you will have no problem. And the auto update stuff can be turned off. And getting rid of any virus is an easy task 90% of the time.

Basically comes down to user error. Which is why some people really should just buy macs. Less chance of something going wrong if you are not very computer literate. Apple also do decent student discounts on all their hardware and give cheaper cover plans.

Can't you just go to a friend's house and quickly activate it?
That'd mean taking my comp over there, it's a big desktop and I don't have a car so it's not really possible, meh this just proves how much online activation sucks balls!
