Hey guys,

I've played singleplayer games for a while now. Think I've had my fill for some time. Now I'm looking for an online game in which I could play a support character because that's the playstyle which suits me most.

I was thinking something in the line of shooters, MOBAS. In general games where matches don't last hours long.

I've been hearing good stuff about Natural Selection. Anyone care to share more? :)

If possible not an MMORPG (because I do not have the time needed to invest). Though I'm open for all suggestions. Even if it's an MMORPG if you think it's that good. :)

Cheers. :D

Captcha: do a little dance. *shrugs* Well, why not? :)

Edit: added a little bit more specifics. For clarity.

Just about every MMO has some form of "support class", you might wanna be a little more specific

Do you like shooters? If so. Team Fortress 2. You could go medic and heal people. Or if that game isn't your style, maybe Killing Floor. As a medic, or support, which is shotguns and improved door welding.

Any modern FPS with Engineer/Medic/etc classes, as much as they aren't also the peeps slinging bullets. TF2 at least, and I believe that Planetside 2 has clear divides.

I know. But everyone also has his favorite online game. :) Though you are right. I'll be more specific. Will edit my post. Thanks for the tip.

While the line between "assault" and "support" classes has been considerably blurred in recent games, the Battlefield series still allows you to do some support roles. The Assault class can provide medical support. There's also the Support class, which can resupply ammo, and the Engineer class is self-explanatory. However, as mentioned, the line between "assault" and "support" classes has been blurred since Battlefield 2, so expect to be relied on a lot more for killing enemies than you would in "support" classes in older Battlefield games. Still, if you haven't played the older ones, they level of support you can offer shouldn't be too much of a disappointment.

Warframe. It's a free to play online 3rd person ninja shooter. It's loads of fun, and there are quite a few support classes. And it's not competitive, it's co-op.

You may want to try Planetside 2 or DUST 514 (in case you own a PS3), they are halfway between a fps-moba and an MMORPG:
Skills to level up, money to be gained, equipement to purchase, big world... But limited scale battles and ability to go in and out as you please.

Y'know I played TF2 for a while, for that very reason (being that I like playing support as well), but I found that medic-ing wasn't as involved or compelling as I'd have liked it to be.

This wasn't, like, high-level play though, so that might have more to do with it. Co-operation and opponent skill probably makes it more interesting.

League of legends isn't a shooter, but the matches only last 30-45 minutes, so you could try that. It might be an MMO, but it isn't really time intensive the way others are.

For a less traditional recommendation, in terms of personal choice, not so much gameplay mechanics... You could play as a hero or medic in DayZ.

If you're looking for that social aspect of really helping someone, making friends, and sacrificing yourself for others then DayZ may interest you. I mean, when you play a medic, or engineer in TF2 it's just like "meh, whatever he's just doing his assigned role's job." You're helping people, and supporting them, but it's like you're forced into it and they're 'entitled' to it. You could take some class that's not often used for support and do surprise people a little, but after that its pretty much the same. With DayZ though, you get that element of surprise, choice, and socialization.... Assuming they don't shoot at you or try to punch you out.

Though, I admit its not team based, match based, and it does involve some level of time commitment... Not as much as a MMO though. So, yeah those might be deal breakers for you. Also note that it is pretty hit or miss as I infered above. A lot of people will try to kill, rob/torturr, or insult you even if you massively out gun them... This is the Internet after all. Also if you go exploring you could find yourself alone for hours on end, but stick to the heavy traffic areas and you can always find people.

No it's not. It's a MOBA.

SMITE is a Mythology inspired MOBA that just released, it's free to play and has quite a few support 'Gods'. Some of them can heal and buff the team while others assist in killing the enemy by stunning them. There's also the Tank, being the class that soaks up the damage, ensuring the rest of the team survives.

If you were to play a MOBA, I would start with League as it is really really easy. After a while you might want to jump over to Dota 2 though. Its a better game with a much higher learning curve. Also, its more balanced. There is no "OMG SUPER OP" or "OMG WTF YOU PICK EVE GGWP" Every hero is good, and none are op, there is no set meta where you will be flamed or swore at for differing. All around better game.

SMITE is decent, it definitely feels good and different after 3000 hours of League, but I feel it doesn't have the lasting potential of either Dota or League.

Hey guys,

MOBAS..
I have started playing a game that, I think, beats LoL hands down. Third person perspective and every attack has to be aimed. I speak, of course, of Smite. Instead random characters that the creators invent, you get Gods and Goddesses base on real mythology. Greek, Chinese, Hindu, Aztec, and Norse are all there with future Gods coming. It's a lot of fun, and right now you can buy all the Gods and the next 6 Gods for about 30 bucks. Ha, no I'm not a part of the company... Just love the game. Been playing it for the last 5 days.

For support you can either glass cannon mage for pushing, or go straight Guardian and tank. My favorite right now is Bacchus (the Roman Dionysus). His passive is a wine-o-meter that goes sober, tipsy and smashed (not even kidding, his moves are: drink wine for self buffs, Belly flop that knocks enemies into the air and stuns them if smashed, a loud belch that deals a bit of damage and stuns enemies if smashed, and his ultimate. This attack, I kid you not, gets his enemies drunk and dealing a nice ***** of damage. He's also damn fast for a tank.

You should definitely check out Smite.

I will kindly disagree. I haven't played DOTA at all, so I cannot say if SMITE is better than it. I CAN say that I vastly prefer SMITE over League. I feel it has enough of a niche feel to it that will allow it to be around for a long time. You can buy all of the characters for 30, which includes the next 6. With League, it's a bit overwhelming. You have all of these characters to choose from, and you don't know where to start. Smite offers a nice tutorial that explains quite a bit of the game to you. And you can still play bot games and gain exp.
