Hey guys,

I've played singleplayer games for a while now. Think I've had my fill for some time. Now I'm looking for an online game in which I could play a support character because that's the playstyle which suits me most.

I was thinking something in the line of shooters, MOBAS. In general games where matches don't last hours long.
MOBAs pretty much all have support characters afaik, so have your pick (LoL, DOTA, the usual). As for shooters, BF4 gives you ample opportunity to play a support character and you don't even need to necessarily play the Support class :p

Seriously though, you can provide air support (flying a transport heli is as supportive as it gets, as you're just giving your teammates a mobile spawn point and a flying death machine; also, planes, attack helis and so on), provide sniper cover (you can whine at snipers all you want, a well played one can make a lot of difference), supply your teammates with ammo/healing packs while defending a position with a mounted LMG and/or a freaking mortar etc.

The game may get flak (and it deserves a lot of it), but the series is still alive, kicking and more fun for me (being also someone who prefers to play some supportive role) than any other shooter ever.

League of Legends if you want to play support in a moba.

If you're looking for an mmo type of experience you can try Rift, it's free to play and you can pretty much switch from healer or damage dealer without having to make another character.

If you were to play a MOBA, I would start with League as it is really really easy. After a while you might want to jump over to Dota 2 though. Its a better game with a much higher learning curve. Also, its more balanced. There is no "OMG SUPER OP" or "OMG WTF YOU PICK EVE GGWP" Every hero is good, and none are op, there is no set meta where you will be flamed or swore at for differing. All around better game.

SMITE is decent, it definitely feels good and different after 3000 hours of League, but I feel it doesn't have the lasting potential of either Dota or League.

Dota2>League>SMITE
This poster is correct about going from league to DOTA2, League is a simplified version of the old DOTA game that both are based off of. However the poser went crazy pants and suggested that DOTA2 is more balanced. Not even kinda true. It's a far, FAR more complicated game that allows for some really crazy imbalances, which is why you should cut your teeth on a game like LOL.
How is Dota 2 unbalanced?

In Loadout, you can modify your guns to shoot healing bullets or buffing bullets, but it might be in your best interest not to use both at the same time
Loadout is a free to play shooter for the pc
In Archeblade (an action MOBA), there are two characters(Sewon and Dick) that can work as support characters, Sewon can heal an is apparently not optimal for melee, and Dick can restore his team's armor
It is also free to play

If you're ok doing competitive MMO's then you could try Guild Wars 2. Practically every class can run support so you can find one that suits you best, and you can jump straight into the structured pvp without needing to grind for gear, as it's all available right from the start. Then there's the advantage that there's no subscription so for MMO I'd say it's probably a great shout.

I'd advise against League of Legends (or any other MOBA to be honest) simply because playing on your own and especially as a support in them is quite draining.

Only FPS I know of with support as an option is Team Hatress 2, playing as Medic or Engineer.

TF2 at least, and I believe that Planetside 2 has clear divides.
Planetside 2 isnt quite as clear cut. Every infantry class is more or less equally capable at killing, but only the medic can heal other players health bars and revive downed players. Also the engineer is good to have around since MAX's either have auto healing or protection from explosions, not both. Also ammo boxes.

Theres just no such thing as pure support in PS2.

I've been hearing good stuff about Natural Selection. Anyone care to share more? :)

If possible not an MMORPG (because I do not have the time needed to invest). Though I'm open for all suggestions. Even if it's an MMORPG if you think it's that good. :)

Cheers. :D

Captcha: do a little dance. *shrugs* Well, why not? :)

Edit: added a little bit more specifics. For clarity.
Final Fantasy XIV is a new MMO with good support classes. Of course you've got your standard healers, scholar and white mage (you have to level the classes conjurer and archanist first), but the DPS classes can also be considered a sort of support. Bard especially, since not only are you dealing damage while the tank keeps the monster's attention, but you also have a few song which can help the party (mage's ballad to help the mage classes recover MP faster, foe requiem to decrease the monster's magic resistance, swiftsong to make everybody run faster, etc).

Before jumping in I would recommend looking up the classes and jobs first, just so you know what's going on when you make your character. There are different "classes," but at level 30 these become different "jobs." So if you level the class archer, at level 30 that becomes bard. The rest are as follows:

Conjurer: White mage
Archanist: Summoner or Scholar (Summoner is a DPS and scholar is a healer. Leveling archanist, you technically level these both at the same time, but you can choose to specialize as one if you prefer).
Pugilist: Monk (hand-to-hand DPS)
Lancer: Dragoon (polearm DPS)
Archer: Bard (bow DPS and a few support moves)
Thaumaturge: Black mage (magic DPS)
Gladiator: Paladin (sword and shield tank)
Maurader: Warrior (axe-weilding tank)

It's less complicated than it sounds. And this game is best learned playing as a DPS or healer first, because the tanks are expected to know quite a bit about what's going on. And it's loads of fun, I highly recommend it :3 I believe you get a 30 day trial period to try it out, and it doesn't take too horribly long to get somewhere in the game.

Eve online has some very interesting PVP support roles, these are good noob roles:-

Scout: Get into a cloaking frigate (smallest and fastest ship type) and watch the enemy giving info to the fleet commander. Or to scout ahead of the fleet while it is roaming from system to system.

Tackler: This role is usually given to noobs and starting characters who don't have the skills learnt to fly bigger ships.
Again it's a fast frigate whose job is to trap enemy ships from running away (put points on), since it's very easy to run away in Eve it's an integral part of PVP from small skirmishes where pirates will tackle their prey and demand ransom money, to those massive Titan capitol ships shown in videos on game sites. That type of tackler just affects one ship, but you can also drop large stationary bubbles to trap a group of ships.

Cleric, basically healing enengy and shields to friendly targets or sapping it from enemy ships. Often normal fighting ships will just use one of their weapon slots to give an edge in combat, but there are special ships that are designed for this role.

Pick a moba. no, really, ANY moba. it iwll have support characters. almost any mmorpg has support characters. online shooters have medics. online tank shooters have artillery that sits in the corner and shoots tanks spotted by its teammates. Eve has a complex support roles but then again eve PVP has everything complex.
There is A LOT of support things, you may want to narrow your question.

I would sugest trying Loudout. Its free arena shooter that has a cool ability to craft your own guns. that means you can have a healing gun, healing granade, ect that you desined to your liking.
Also i always want more people to play WOT or Eve, but first one requires a lot of nerves dealing with, well, not too intelligent people, and the second one is a MMO that you said you dont want.

Loadout

Only downside is it's constant, and often quite large, updates and a matchmaking server that's pretty bad.
well its still in (open) beta so constant updates are to be expected.

Shooters with support classes: TF2, most Battlefield games, Planetside 2, et al.

MOBAS: League of Legends, DOTA 2, SMITE. These games all have a wide array of support-based classes, from healers to crowd-control to tanks. Pick one and give it a few games. Doesn't really matter which.

I don't play a lot online either but my two favorite games from the past two years are great online:
Borderlands 2 & GTA V.
Borderlands might be more of what you're looking for because its a FPS and there are a couple of characters who (if you choose the correct perks) are amazing support characters: a couple of characters can even call in their own support 'drones' of a sort. It's not a competitive game, just co-op.
If you want something a little more wild, try GTAO. I find myself filling support roles often while playing missions and other jobs in it. It has a wider variety of weird things to do and (besides the races, missions, and shootups) has a lot of ambient stuff going on in the open world for you and your friends to profit off of: armored trucks & convenient stores to raid, crate drops, gang attacks.

League of Legends could use another dedicated support player, there is not much of them these days... It would even help with toxicity a bit, as "who support?" is usually the second issue that leads to flame in games (right after "me mid" followed by "FU, I go mid or I troll").
