Online mistaken-gender confusion

So as you can probably guess from my very subtle avatar here, I make no secrets about which way my orientation is...erm...oriented.

Trouble with me is that while I'm open about liking guys, I very rarely feel the need to say "I'm a guy which makes me gay" when using forums, only saying it when NOT saying it would lead to issues of confusion, or if it's necessary to what I'm say, OR if someone calls me a girl (which has happened on here a few times).

This 'being called a girl' thing is what prompts this thread, with a very simple question: has anyone here had anyone on a forum assume they're of the opposite gender to what they are? Like, guys assumed to be girls or girls assumed to be guys?

For some reason I imagine girls on gaming-oriented forums get assumed to be guys quite often...

Not exactly. My old username was Carnkhan4 (after Genghis Khan) but people kept assuming I was Turkish or trying to piss me off by insulting Islam...it was a little surreal...

I honestly find more femenine guys online than masculine women, I very rarely (if at all) mistake women for men .. but on more than one occasion I have mistaken a man as a woman, yet I can't think why I've done it. Oh well I'll post when I next do it ^^

Sometimes people think I'm female, happens rarely though. Not sure why, maybe it's the avatar, people tend to have a "cat = girl, dog = boy" thing in their brain for some reason.

I've been mistaken as a guy on quite a few other sites, but most people here seem to check my profile first, or assume from my avatar.

LOL that really made me laugh.

Yeah, I get mistaken for a girl alot since I kinda type how I talk and notmally it's all like BYAAAA and stuff.
Secretly I'm just a lad that likes football.

Meh, people mistook me for a girl in one of those picture threads too, that was HILARIOUS.

Good times good times.

It doesn't bother me; it's more funny than anything else.

:D.

Yup. My avatar's a woman and I've commented quite a bit on issues involving women (there's quite a bit of misogyny here on the Escapist), so a few times I've been told that I'm just pissed that no one wants me because I'm fat and ugly and my vag probably smells funny. Which begs the question, though I'm not any sort of other-defined transsexual, does this mean that I possibly have a metaphysical vag, and if so, does it indeed smell?

I've also told that I'll probably end up with diabetes and varicose (almost always misspelled) veins in my breasts. I then get to tell them that, as a slender heterosexual man without gynecomastia, I don't have such concerns.

Back when I played Final Fantasy XI I was oddly mistaken for a girl on quite a number of occasions. Despite that I had a male character (To be fair, Tarutaru males are hard to distinguish at first glance) and a clearly male name.
When I think about it though, I guess it isn't that surprising given my excessive use of emotes and smilies when I talk in-game. I always kept a very friendly and silly attitude, and I constantly fawned over cute things and equipment that made by character look cute.. and occasionally jokingly hit on several male Linkshell members that I had known for a very long time.
Odd that more people accused me of being a girl rather than simply being homosexual though.

On forums I tend to take quite a bit more of a toned down attitude though, so I haven't had any situations like the above out-of-game.

I'm probaly mistaken for a Man all the time online, unless my profile is checked out. I honestly couldn't care.
I'll only state I'm a Girl is the quetion is asked or if it makes my responce and how I view it more clear.

Well in real life:
I have long hair. Contrary to what you'd expect, I actually look like a girl with short hair.
But not online.

Yep, I once checked your profile because I like your posts, and discovered you're female. Didn't really make a difference, but a small alarm went off in my head going "Yay, amusing girl with sense of humour".

Very often. In fact, almost always. Being a lesbian doesn't help, because I don't even have the "my boyfriend" mentions to sway that.

Knowing the people I know online, if you'd thrown in the "my boyfriend" stuff you'd have just been assumed to be a gay guy before you were assumed to be a woman. I once tried saying "girlfriend" instead of "boyfriend" once and endured a month or so of people refusing to believe I wasn't a lesbian.

Apparently I'm just THAT feminine.

I don't recall it every happening, although I have seen people assume people with female avatars are female. I assume it doesn't happen to me as mine is an A.I. Or maybe people do, but are too polite to mention it.

I'm very often mistaken for a bloke. And it doesn't bother me at all. I rarely correct them, it's not really a big deal for me.

It's happened to me a good few times, I suppose on a site like this though it's fair to assume I'm a guy unless obviously stated otherwise.
I've gotten a few 'Well played, good sir's in my time.

Not quite the same as a forum, but I've been mistaken as a girl in my guild on WoW and went along with it for about a year because it was fun. I eventually had to come out to them when they wanted me to start using Ventrillo. My girl voice isn't very convincing. ^_^

I've assumed some people on here are a gender that they're not occasionally due to a guy having a female as an avatar or vice versa for girls. If their gender really matters to a conversation I want to have with them though I usually check their profile beforehand.

I used be occasionally mistaken for a woman on this site ages ago as I had an avatar containing both a male and a female anime character, so people would tend to guess which represented me.

People Frequently confuse me and my friend Josh as some sort of romantic couple in City of Heroes, despite the fact that both our avatars are male. We used to try to explain that he is my fatter clone from the future, but that never worked so I am at least happy that he has been mistaken for the girl for once.
