Heh. I've actually had someone hit on me before on the PSN because they thought I was a girl. My avatar is Felicia, that cat girl from Dark Stalkers. That was...interesting. And more than a little creepy.

Yup. I'm often mistaken for a guy. Even though my user name is (translates to) Rose Princess.

Ironically, I often get mistaken for a guy for liking My Little Pony. Weird how that works out, huh?

I'm usually assumed to be a dude on most game/art sites where a profile picture of me isn't somewhere in plain sight, I presume since there's so many more males that make up this kind of community/profession. I don't mind, and it's not worth clarifying unless gender is in some way related to the discussion.

Alia is my middle name and pretty clearly feminine, I would guess. Perhaps a lot of people read my username as Chemical Ali, lol.

Interestingly enough I have been asked if I was a lesbian on two separate occasions by two different people on two different forums.

Mikey[/b]fell is all of my screen names and gamertags and the gender on my profile is always set to male, which I am.

Maybe it's because the posts in question were harping on "Traditional gender roles" and stereotypes and in those conversations I have absolutely nothing positive to say about strait guys.

I've also had many people accuse me of being British (Which I take as a compliment) but no I just like using words like bloody, bollocks, and bugger.

When ever a gender comes up in a post I write I'll usually check out their profile to see if their gender is posted in their information before I type "His" or "Hers" or offhandedly call a girl "Dude" which I've done before.

I usually don't mistake one for the other, but then again I don't really care to ask or pay that much attention. I did have someone online mistake me for a girl one time which was kind of weird.

Yes, yes we do, although 99% of the time it's when I'm playing my MMO. EVERYONE in that game assumes you're a guy. And then they get horrified when they hear my actual voice over the mic. I generally assume other players are male unless I hear a female voice over the mic, too.

What I don't understand is the people who get snippy about it (or apologize for it). English doesn't have a third-person singular gender-neutral pronoun that can be used to address people. (If you call someone "it", expect them to be rather more peeved than if you call them the wrong gender.) So we have to guess. Inevitably there are going to be wrong guesses.

People have thought I was a girl on line quite often actually, well more than I would expect anyway... they usually say, it's the avatar...

The Avatar choice becomes all the more appropriate then eh? :p

But honestly, I know I've been mistaken for a female many times, probably do to my love of Fluttershy and other feminine characters. I myself do not mind being mistaken for a female and my orientation is bi leaving more towards the straight side.

Well, I often never make assumptions and just roll with 'that's a guy, nothing ordinary' when I see another user, at anywhere. Than just shut up about it until proven otherwise.

But, people not as often take me for a female anymore, and that's super I suppose. No more "Hey, wanna get LUCKY?!" messages floating towards me like a sea of dangerous debris.
And if they do, I can always joke around with them to pass the time.

However, I have noticed a few things that differs genders and should give a clear picture of whomever it is speaking, even before they have revealed their said gender to anyone and/or you.
(WATCH OUT! GONNA MAKE MASSIVE GENERALISATIONS! HRRRRRNNNGGGG!!!)

1) If the user-name has their own name, not as a representation of anything moral or w/e, but just their own name, you can easily take them to be male/female depending what it is. However, it fails to be when the unisex names like Sam comes along.

2) If the user-name includes either 'Cat, puppy and/or any other cute animal', you can safely bet on a 90% margin that the user is indeed female. For this have been the case more times than never at all.

3) If the user-name and/or their avatar, inside a game and/or inside an Internet forum consists of a female avatar, there is a 70% chance that user is indeed male, for males have a fair obsession for women and likes to include them to their every-day standards.
Whilst females in this case, consisting of the meager 30% just puts it out there for many kinds of reasons.

I have a propensity to use female characters as avatars and signatures, so I've been mistaken for a girl a couple of times...

If someone mistakes me for one I often state how I have a girlfriend. And you'd better not assume I'm still female if I say that.

people often assume I'm a girl, and both guys and girls hit on me, 'course I only go for girls but either way I play along.... and lol when they find out

also is it strange that I'm fine with being.... a lez guy (lol) or rather a guy thought to be a girl and hit on by/hits on girls? is there even such a thing as a Lez guy in this instance?

Not really. I guess my your username has "Mr" in it, then you don't get mistaken for the other sex

I have been mistaken for a male on many, many occasions. In fact, I don't recall any forums or websites (discluding the ones where gender is shown right under the avatar, or they have Male and Female "dress-up doll" avatars such as websites like Gaiaonline) where I haven't been, at first, mistaken for the opposite gender.

Of course, the unisex username, dude-riding-a-horse avatar, and male-looking minecraft skin (the only online game I play regularly) don't help much. I don't really mind though; It tends to make talking to people easier when they think I'm the same gender as them.

People usually get me right. Either that or they simply just don't bother asking or caring. I am usually really quiet in online games and what-not, so most likely people don't even notice me in their games.

I don't think I make things too confusing for people. Not anymore, anyway. :p

Left 4 Dead etiquette is to refer to people by the sex of his or her character (Zoey and Rochelle are she) juxtaposed to calling players by their handles.[footnote]Many Steam users use unpronounceable screennames, at which point we revert to character names.[/footnote]

There are guys who are attracted to butch lesbians, often an angst-ridden, tragic existance.[footnote]Numerous butches are bi-curious or outright bisexual, though, so not too tragic...[/footnote]

...If the user-name includes either 'Cat, puppy and/or any other cute animal', you can safely bet on a 90% margin that the user is indeed female...
Reading this makes me want to think of cute-animal based handles that might confuse the issue.

Once on Black Ops someone invited me to a party and I didn't talk for a while and everyone assumed I was a girl because of my playercard image had lots of hearts and male gender symbols.
I was booted from the party soon after D:

Yep I'm usually being mistaken for a guy at first, even though I usually use female usernames and avatars. I don't actually mind it really, sometimes it feels as though people are more likely to take me seriously when they think I'm a dude. :p
