Not exactly. My old username was Carnkhan4 (after Genghis Khan) but people kept assuming I was Turkish or trying to piss me off by insulting Islam...it was a little surreal...
Which is rather funny since Gengis Khan was Mongolian :p

Anywyas never been mistake for a girl, but I have mistaken a lot of gay guys for being girls, due to the fact that when people talk about liking a guy and all that my default value is that the person is a girl.

and with all the guys using girls as avatars on this forum it is sort of hard to know who is a guy and who is a girl...

I have had the same thing once with a girl liking girls too though.

People on another forum thought I was female, despite that forum having a feature that has a gender symbol just under the avatars. I've never quite figured out how they came to think I was female and none of them seem willing to divulge that information...

It would be rather odd for a person that goes by "Fappy" to be thought of as a girl. However, it has happened here before XP

I've never been assumed to be of the opposite sex. I have been assumed to be older than I am, though, which is somewhat bizarre.

And your avatar is - at least for me - right now, very, very subtle, as I can't even see it.

The gender-confusion thing is really common in MMOs such as WoW. I presume that every female character is just a guy playing a female alt because, more often than not, it is.

I tend to just assume someone is male until I find out otherwise. It doesn't really change how I think of them or anything like that, so it makes no difference to me what sex they are.

I use almost entirely male avatars, and my username is in no way feminine, so its not really a surprise I've never been mistaken for a female. That and I like to talk about my sideburns.

Nope because I'm the very epitome of manliness in whatever I do. There is no confusion.
Are you EpicMealTime guy? or are you just using his face for your avatar?

OT: No one has ever questioned my gender, no one...

I have to say, kudos on the thread. I've laughed about this exact subject several times with my friends, but this is the first thread I've seen about it.

Now the opinion part...
I've definitely had incidents where people have mistaken me for a guy, which I'm not. But, considering that some forums aren't as nice as this one, it's a mistake I usually let slide until I can feel out the environment a bit better. In a way, it's almost like a safety measure for me. That anonymity that comes with being words on a screen and not having to worry about the instinctive judgement that comes with people knowing my gender, what I look like and how I speak. So it can be a good thing in some situations. However, I can see the frustration or exasperation that could come with a mistake like that, too. So, I guess it really depends on how open anyone wants to be when it comes to forums, right? :)

Nope, never.

But where did your avatar go?

There was this one time in the picture-of-your-self thread where one user jokingly said I was clearly the most attractive one there (I was wearing an ugly halloween costume).
I assumed the user was male, and jokingly suggested going out. I then found out they were a girl.
With the new context my post suddenly changed from "Sexually ambiguous joking" to "Creepy guy on the internet asking to date".

Sigh.

Also: This is waaaay more awkward in real life. A waiter at a restaurant was attending my family once, and after getting my mother's order, he asked what "the girls" [me and my sister] would be having.
I took it nicely, but I think the waiter was dying with shame. Then my mom started nagging me about cutting my hair again.

been mistaken for a guy but its really not surprising since theres nothing particually feminie about by avatar and its natural to assume a person is a guy unless its stated otherwise

and I only bring up my gender when/if its relevant

it was quite funny as once I made a thread and due to a misunderstanding everyone thourght I had failed in school then all suggested I join the military

Well, not on forums, butI remember back in the good ol days when I played Gunz, I played as a female character so for some strange reason people assumed I was female in real life.

I got hit on for the first time in a game last weekend, because I was using a female avatar. I picked the female class because it's an FPS and I assume that since the female build is smaller she has a smaller hitbox :p

But yeah, dude called Vegatron on this game was like 'Hey you look super hot'... then spent the next 20 minutes trying to get my email because I thought it would be fun to go along with it :)

I never realised how piggish men are XD

I've never been mistaken either why, but I have mistook both ways. Both times embarrassing for both me and the mistook. Consider this an elongated apology.

When I'm clean shaven I still get mistaken for a girl in real life, but it's quite hilerious when someone pulls their "awesome" pickup line only to find they are romancing a dude.

As for the internets I can't see how it matters, generally I'll consider everybody male just so I can walk past the social stigma and go on and on about dick and fart jokes.

Online? Not really. In real life, I have been mistaken as a girl a couple times. It's probably because of my hair and how I like to keep myself cleanly shaven.

My name defines an angry man, along with profile picture. If you thought otherwise, have fun sleep over the fact that YOU tried to chat up a GUY.
