The few times I play online I do it for the fun. Not because I want to win. This leads to being yelled at by the people who has to win. Which diminishes the fun somewhat, but not that much.

But I seldom play online. Not sure why, but I just like the SP experience more. It is more laidback, because I can pause the game whenever I want. You don't have that luxury online. And I don't really have friends to play with online either. Much more fun playing with people you know.

Besides, the only game I play fairly good is TF2. Which crashes for some reasons these days. Think I'm gonna reinstall it...
Anyway, I just play it for fun, I am not good at any specific class. But I still often end up towards the top of the list. I die a lot, but I also get a lot of points. I know for a fact I have secured my teams victory several times. And that is so much fun. Especially when I am just playing for fun. I think those who play to win don't get the same satisfaction as someone like me.

I think you're right, I have a lot more fun when playing for fun with buddies.

When you play to win all the time it just results in frustration whenever you lose or do badly. Games aren't meant to make me angry... they are meant to entetain me and give me fun.

Everytime a thread like this starts it seems that the problem isn't in the genre of the game itself but in the people. It's just happens that some people doesn't like playing against others, they instantly take it seriously when the opponent is human (and not someone they know) instead of a bot.

I say just forget about those games, play singleplayer, play platform games, adventures.

It's quite unfair saying that it's the game's fault somehow.
I think if you read my OP properly you'll find that I wasn't blaming the game, but myself.

It would be pretty retarded to blame an inanimate object for my mis-use of it.

I stopped playing Gamebattles matches when I realized that no matter how good I was, there would always be some twat sitting in a corner that would wreck me and that just wasn't fun for me anymore. Now I stick to pub matches, and I'm having much more fun getting wrecked by the twats sitting in corners with Akimbo 1887s.

Once upon a time, there was a guy who gamed for fun.

Then 6 months ago, he got XBOX Live and everything changed.

Suddenly, gaming was no longer something he did to relax, it became competitive. He spent hours and hours getting destroyed in Halo 3 and COD4 only to keep coming back, learning the games, learning about people's online behaviour and getting slowly but surely better.

There were so many frustrations in online gaming... host advantage, bad connections, lag, cheating, the knowledge that some people would always just have faster reflexes and better aim than him...

He put a lot of work into getting better, then realised he wasn't having fun anymore.

No game of MW2 was satisfying to him unless he got a huge KD ratio and frustration would set in when that was not achieved.

So he reinstalled Fallout 3 and went back to the Capital Wasteland.

As the relaxing, gorgeous vistas and soothing sonics of the Capital Wasteland washed over his eyes and ears, making his heart feel warm and at peace, he remembered the reason he enjoyed gaming in the first place, to escape form the harsh, competitive reality of life.

And so he decided to stop giving a shit about his KD ratio, realised what a twat he had been and repeated the mantra to himself: 'It's only a game'.

My question to you, fellow Escapists, is do any of you share this experience with me?

Have you ever just gone 'fuck it', and decided that competitive gaming was just too annoying to get bothered about anymore?

Or do you relish the grind, the frustration and sense of achievement after finally getting better than other people?
I've did this about 10 years ago (1999) with TacOps, basically unreal's version of Counter Strike. I've never played a game seriously since our one fabled clan match where our clan decided to just say fuck it. We went knifes and night vison. We tried to kill the enemy clan my jumping off a dam and landing on their heads. We would rush them with a barrage of throwing knifes and try to hit them in the face with smoke grenades (it did 5 damage).

We basically just fucked around (and went from 3rd to 52nd on the ladder ;) ) and I've never looked back. Most of my online time consists of doing stupid shit. Sometimes it pays of miraculously and has everyone going "HOLY CRAP!" Most of the time it's just such a bad idea it's hilarious.

Fun times... it's always more fun to mess around.

New favorite game mode: MW2... Private games with buddies where we can only kill eachother by cooking grenades in our hands and blowing ourselves up next to someone.

In some sick masochistic twist, I do this. The frustration makes it fun when I finally succeed. Quiting only makes it worse for me.

This may lead to rants of frustration, broken headsets (crappy ones, not turtle beaches or something) and rage quits, but at the end of the day, I come back for more until I finally do well.

Yes...

but I traded in my copy of F3 to preorder MW2 (we will fix that soon *fetal position*) so now I say "Fuck this shit" throw my controller and go play Aion or Guild Wars or sleep or...Oblivion.

I honestly think that IW have managed to build one of the most mis-balanced and shitty online shooters in history. Even when I win, I have absolutely zero fun. Quite how they managed to fuck it up so royally after the joys of CoD4 is a mystery. But yep, I've just quit playing it.

And seeing as decent free-roaming RPGs are a rarity nowadays (I'm a Morrowind fan, I know that all the recent Bethesda offerings are not good enough to hold my attention), I've actually come to the conclusion today that gaming has died for me.

I hate competitive play, loathe it...........if it was a living being, I'd torture it to death. I just get wound up after about five minutes and feel like I need to step back five years to when I was on some decent drugs!

I want fun, and gaming with others offers none of it for me nowadays.

I could never hurt my Turtle Beach headset... (they're to hard to find here in Ireland) but have felt the same rage.

Really? Because I've been seeing the same old COD host advantage and lag every day on Live.

Hmm I reccommend trying Assasin's Creed 2, it not only restored my faith in Ubisoft (somewhat), but in hugely engaging single player games.

I noticed last night in MW2 I had finished a game 18-2 and was pissed I didn't get my second killstreak. That's not cool... when you win and aren't having fun.
