Online trolls. Creative ways of dealing with them?

Recently I've been playing a lot of GTA online. I'm enjoying it hugely, as it seems to be the gaming equivalent of the wild west. Random rolling battles across the map can go on for hours, grudges are settled and many things are destroyed.

However, even in this chaos, I still encounter people that manage to piss me off. Trolls in tanks, trolls waiting outside your house/garage. Hell, even I've been guilty of being a bit of a bastard at times!

What creative ways have you dealt with trolls in an online environment, and what pushed you to take action?

Mine was a couple of days back. I really wanted a Merryweather 4x4 from the mercs I called in on someone. All I had to do was make it from my house to Los Santos Customs. Some person decided that he was going to relentlessly pursue me, lobbing grenades, shooting out my tyres and eventually destroying the vehicle.

So I ended up stalking him!

I grabbed a Buzzard and got myself up to five stars. I then waited for him to rob a store, before parachuting in, quickly getting in my car (which amazingly was parked just there!)and blocking him in said store with the now angry SWAT team filling the street outside!

Sure I died, but he wasn't best pleased at inheriting all the attention of the cops. I got an angry message from him after I walked through the chaos, flipped him the bird and then took a selfie with him imprisoned in the background, under heavy fire.

The crowning glory was that to try and escape, he had to blow my car up, costing him twice what he'd earned from the robbery in the first place!

I think there was a video I saw a while ago about an aimbotter in Bad Company 2 being repeatedly run over and revived by his teammates so he couldn't get any shots off. For some reason, it was a lot funnier than just seeing somebody shot by friendly fire and revived; vehicles hurtling out of nowhere to flatten someone like a pancake are just better comedy value, I suppose. They even backed a tank over him "by accident".

Not sure about the GTA stuff but when it comes to verbal trolls, really the only solution is ignoring them. Any acknowledgement, even if you think you're "trolling them back" serves only to entertain them, give them more to go on etc. A decent troll already has the mindset of not caring at all, so if you think you came up with some sort of clever comeback, all they're gonna do is say they fucked your mom and enjoy as you spend even more time trying to outdo them.

Reading your post though, I'm not sure you quite understand what a troll is.. Someone who plays in a way that pisses you off is not a troll, that's just you getting pissed off at stuff you don't like. Following someone around and destroying their car in a chaos simulator such as GTA online seems like a completely appropriate thing to do, and something that would be fairly entertaining. I don't see how that would make anyone a troll.

Trolling is the art of finding out what makes people mad/annoyed and purposely using that against them to get entertaining reactions. Whether it's saying stuff, doing stuff, etc.

He was camped outside my garage, waiting for me for no reason. Definitely a troll!

As for the verbal stuff, I don't have to deal with that as I don't use a headset. XBox Live taught me that it's generally better to not have any real communication with the other players. The PS3 arriving without a headset in the box is a blessing!

Yeah but he was doing it in the context of a game where the dickery is intentionally built into the actual gameplay mechanics itself.

You can spawn camp most online games. Why is it any different here?

I'm all for a decent fight, but sitting outside someones house waiting for them......really??

Well granted, I guess it is not any different from spawn-camping in any other online game.

It kinda feels like it should be more acceptable just because its GTA. Admittedly I have never played GTA online, just the single-player versions but I do love the ide of games that have a douchbaggery mechanic where otherwise abhorrent behaviour is not only possible, but encouraged. Dark Souls, for example, or EVE for when you need to take your deviousness to a larger scale.

I'm currently being spawn-camped by two people. Unfortunately I'm on foot, in the middle of the desert, and they have a tank and a buzzard.

I've gone into passive mode and have tucked myself into a little corner that they can't get to. They've been pointlessly harassing my character for over an hour. I'm watching yesterdays F1 on iPlayer!!

Just yesterday, I had an invader in DS2 that invaded and just ran around trying to waste my time. Of course, he was a santier's spear user. I just ignored him and kept exploring the iron keep until he finally decided his trolling wasn't working and tried to ambush me as I was fighting enemies. Parried and took off 75% of his health with a critical. He ran off and healed up, then tried again. I parried him again, then finished him off with a great resonant soul. Didn't get hit by him even once. Felt good.

Okay that is a problem if there is no way to avoid respawning in that exact spot. No fast travel options or anything?

It always feels good to deal with a nuisance effectively.

I often wonder who the hell these people are. They have whole worlds to explore, so many activities to partake in, and they choose to spend hours on pointless pursuits. With the evidence laid out before me, I can only surmise that they are a bit simple!

I would stop playing GTA:O cause it's a terrible game. Yeah, other games have spawn camping as well, but it's nowhere near as bad as this one.

As for other trolls, ignore them. It's the only thing that works with them. If it does get you worked up, remember that it's just a game, and if it's causing you more anger than enjoyment, then switch to a different one.

At least internet trolls are significantly easier to deal with, unlike real-world bullies. Those guys need a certain amount of body language, confidence, and maybe physical retaliation if needed. Almost like you would deal with an animal, cause that's what they are. But even the simplest things like stance and eye-contact do wonders for them.

...Got a bit off-topic there.

I could change lobby, or open a mission. But why should I have to alter my plans, just because someone feels like being a dick?

It wouldn't be an issue if passive mode stopped you from being run over too!

That "Find new session" button sure is hard to find, right?

You dont gain nothing playing it cool by keeping getting your shit fucked up just because you cant swallow some pride and wait less then a minute to go to another server.

And since when is camping trolling? Its just a cheap tactic to kill someone in a mutliplayer game. And since the game encourajes combat between players them wanting to kill you isnt trolling either.

TF2, there were two medics ubering each other and using the Ubersaw. If you've seen people do it, you know that they are more of a distraction than anything, but they are permenantly invincible if hey are good at it. These guys were.

My whole team got so annoyed by them that we completely ignored the objuctives just to stop these guys. Airblasting pyros, FaN scouts, and upgraded sentries all teamed up to pin them in a side room. They hadn't died once, and they apparantly weren't willing to get even one death.

We just stood there, keeping them from leaving that room for 20 minutes. Everyone else on their team sucked, so we still managed to hold them off while this happened. They first acted cocky, saying that they would just uber again and break out, to yelling at us, finally to begging.

The best part was that our team won and we killed them during the humiliation, ruining their perfect game.

This sounds like an average day in Liberty City. The kind of thing you's expect to see just as you're logging in.

I salute you sir. Well done!

That being said, just laugh it off. That garbage truck ramming your car in APB (Awful game, don't play) is just an added challenge to me. That's the best way of dealing with them, just laugh it off.
