ONLIVE to kill console and computer gaming?

I seriously can't see this work over the lag. It would put quite a bit of strain on the servers and connection so ping probably won't be very low.

But then again... console gamers don't really seem troubled by cross-ocean listen servers which lag like hell either.

I actually really hope it kills the rest of the gaming industry. I own a big expensive computer but there is nothing I would like better than to see it become redundant by better tec. Because it is a step forward.
I hope so.

The consoles and any computer that can play current games are really overpriced. Enough people buy their crap so the only way to get them to shape up or ship out is to give them some real competition. Maybe that way when next generation comes around we wont be stuch on a choice between a stupidly overpriced machine that only reaches 1/8th of it's potential, an expensive machine that might spontaneously combust, and an overpriced children's toy.

I'm going to go ahead and be devil's advocate and be unpopular.

I'd say, if they aim this at the casual gamers, the people who don't want to deal with any kind of complex stuff like upgrading a PC or even knowing what min specs are, AND they can pull off a launch without failing their customers, then I think they could have something.

no, its not going to kill off console or PC gaming, or store retail or Steam like services either.

But, it may be another option, and aren't more options always a good thing?

I'd advise them to be honest about minimum specs in terms of line speed however, as if you get people who don't really know much about computers paying for a service, they're not going to listen to techie excuses, they're just going to want refunds.

All in all tho, I think they may have a market in selling to the casual gamers with disposable income who don't want to make a huge investment in a gaming PC.

man your lucky, where do u live. i live in the USA, Florida and with Comcast the best i can get is 16mb for 52$ a month, and then technically I am paying for up to 16Mbps, so they cant guarantee that i will always be getting 16Mbps
I live in Washington State. The best part I live in a fairly rural place, right outside a town of 5,000. I don't even have coax run to my house. Just a phone line, power, and fiber.

I think it will succeed. Not because it should or because it is good at being the latest in technology but because consumers aren't as smart as we would like to think. Not all consumers are gamers and actually buy other people games or subscription fees.

It depresses me to say that this is 100% correct. Granted, it most likely won't kill the console gaming.

words cannot describe how jealous i am ...however i guess its easier to firewire a town of 5000 than a city of 60,000... lucky you.. my rage for comcast is boiling ...

Ha the controller is stupid too. Looks like they have just knocked off the Xbox contoller, but made it uncomfortable looking.

And check out the L, I, V, E buttons... someone loves themselves!

It's steam with a monthly fee. Last I checked steam didn't kill console or PC gaming, but instead improved PC gaming. Plus steam doesn't require a constant connection.
On console games though, it just won't work. With systems like Gamefly, the renting holds no value. Just because there is a DVR-esque element doesn't mean it will catch on (use capture devices and edit later). Plus, the way they set up servers make it impossible to play even cross-country. Every game that will use Natal, every Wii game, and the Sixaxis capable games can't be downloaded either. Sony and Microsoft have nothing to fear.
This device is doomed to fail.
I'm not being unnecessarily cruel, just being a realist. Every console has flaws, but ONLIVE's especially stand out
Edit: They're going to have to edit code to for tutorials because of the buttons, and only a few developers have let them post the games on the service. I doubt that editing code will end up real well either.

No way man. This thing won't kill console gaming so easily. The medium is too well entrenched and I see plenty of issues with this thing and most of them have already been mentioned by other people in this topic page.

well well well looks like consoles and computers wont be needed to play games anymore, check out the link above.

what are your thoughts on this? sorry if its old news =)
This doesn't mean the of consoles and PCs because you have to play games on something what this means is 1 step closer to the fall of the disc.

I doubt it'll last. Not only do you have to pay a monthly sub, you also have to pay for the games you rent/buy on it. Not to mention you're in a lot of trouble if your internet connection starts having issues.

No, nein, niet, negatory... OnLive is never going to kill anything, truly. The worst it could do is make a minor dent in the gaming industry, but I doubt that will happen.

Remember when On Live was announced 2 years ago and everyone just kind of stopped caring?
Well, I still don't care.

I very much doubt it, I am not sold on the idea, they say it wont have lag but then Infinity Ward said MW2 wont need decicated servers.
Never trust the hype
