It's a last ditch effort to override his presidency. Personally I don't care if Obama was born on mars, I just don't like the guy.
I agree with Frankydee. I have seen democrats who think that Obama was born in Kenya.
I dont like him, but I facepalm whenever this is brought up as an argument.

That 42% are why every one in the rest of the world thinks we are all idiots.

Obama had to get clearance from the FBI, NSA and CIA before they tell him anything (before World War 2, military intelligence took FDR off the list of people with top secret clearance temporarily because he threw away a document deemed classified in a waste bin) so they would have said something by now.

Anyone think that these are the same people that think Noah's Ark actually happened, or that Evolution isn't real?

I know that there are plenty of intelligent Americans, but seriously, these imbred retards are making the rest of the world look at you like you just started running around the room with a sheleighly (to steal a phrase from Yahtzee).

Can you imagine the horrors that could occur if one of these flat earthers win a presidential election, and the jesus lovin folks eagerly awaiting the rapture get their fingers on the nuclear button. (People who dont know what Uranium is or where it comes from shouldnt be allowed to possess uranium powered weapons).

Wow, when Republicans have opinions, why is it ok to bash us?
Because that is such an incredibly stupid thing to have an opinion on. How many scientists do you know have believe that gravity isn't real? If the rumor had any truth to it, I'm sure Republicans would have used it during the fucking campaign, not 6 months after in a desperate attempt to console their hopefully dieing party.
There was a issue about it, it was just never touched by the Liberal media and the issue died.

I just got an idea!!! I know how to destroy America. I'll have a kid in Kenya and get him a fake birth certificate for Hawaii. Then in forty or so years I will be able to destroy America as my son becomes president. Then I can have him destroy America as president.
That a paraphrasing of part of that posted Daily Show clip.

I really don't see what the birthers hope to accomplish except shooting the opinion of Republicans further down in public opinion. I really don't like where the Republicans are being sent by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. The ideas of a good party are there, keep government as small as possible but after the last 9 years, I just don't know what to tell them.

You can't sneak anything past the government's inspection of your records when you enlist for the military, much less when you're trying to be in charge of the government itself. A president with a glaring flaw like not being born here somehow managing to bypass their scrutiny? Riiiiight.

obama was born in Hawaii, deal with it. That's how democracy works. We could even argue that Mccain is panamanian but "atleas100yearsago" (i don't know the date) panama was under the US' jurisdiction in order to pay off the canal we dug for them.

And wouldn't it be common sense that they would find 3rd party people to examine each candidates legitimacy before they even let run let alone compete in the final race?

conservatism is dead. The advent of the internet did it in my opinion. Once people tasted the liberty of anonymity they want it in every aspect of their lives.

Ann Coulter called the "Birthers" crazy. ANN FREAKING COULTER!!!

If she's calling you crazy, then either you're doing something good for civil rights; or you're completely, irrevocably, batshit lock-me-up-forever out of your fucking mind!
This wins the topic by a mile. As a conservative and someone who probably has more in common with Republicans than Dems (on actual issues, not in craziness), the people who go on and on about this crap are getting really freakin' annoying.

That, and the idea of Sarah Palin being some savior of the Republican Party is completely laughable and retarded. A bit off topic I know, just thought I'd throw that in. Plus you know she's one of the "birthers" as well.

so the republicans aren't as stupid as you think. If Obama is really a true citizen, why can't he show his birth certificate and avoid the whole thing?

All fifteen of them.
All fifteen of them? Are you kidding me? See this is the problem I have, is that rational people like the majority of the Escapist's clientele (Liberal AND Conservative) believe they are in the majority, perhaps that is true in other countries, but not here in America. Here's another statistic, this from Sam Harris' book Letter to a Christian Nation, 44% of the American populace believes that the rapture will be coming in their lifetimes.

People, you should be scared. These two statistics are terrifying, and the reason they are terrifying is that they speak to the insanity that has begun to consume America. Think about the ramifications of almost half of Americans believing that the world will come to an end in their lifetimes, not only that, but that this end will be glorious and is something to be desired. That statistic alone should explain why it is so hard to pass environmental legislation here in America. And the fact that 58% of Republicans believe this birther conspiracy theory should scare the hell out of you too.

This is a genuine intelectual crisis. We need to open our eyes, because a sizable portion of our countrymen believe things that are absurd, things that are dangerous.
Hold on a sec, sure the birther movement is stupid (saying this as a guy who hates Obama) but that first bit you used about the end of the world is not a problem nor is it absurd.

You're saying that stupid people believe stupid things?

Well ain't that a fancy little tidbit of info you've got there.
Since you're normally a paragon of sanity on the forums, I'm going to assume that you meant only the people in the statistic?

I wouldn't call all of those people "dumb" so much as "easily misled." Propaganda/misinformation is a powerful force that can turn normal, sane people into normal, sane people with positions formed from bad data.

Which reminds me: never trust statistics. When it says 40% of Reps. believe this, it means 40% of the Reps. SURVEYED believe this... and who gets surveyed affects the data you get.

For God's sake, can we PLEASE stop making forums that polarize people politically? Especially ones as pointless as this...
