I decided to get Fallout New Vegas recently, because i enjoyed Fallout 3. i know cool story right?
anyway long story short, i bought the 2 DLC packs as well before installing, and it all went smoothly.
got money and bought the new one Old World Blues, and when i opened downloads (as you do) Fallout New Vegas began downloading an 8Gb update. Now is this a really big DLC pack or were they holding out on the bug updates till i bought the DLC?

I'm guessing this is steam, I had that i resinstalled New vegas and then it acted normal. Seem to be a bug with steam not dececting the game files.

Yeah. NV is around 7GB without DLC and the DLC packs themselves are usually 500 - 800MB.

So I'm guessing Steam isn't verifying that you actually have the game installed already.

There are actually three DLC expansions to New Vegas. Old World Blues is big. You can spend over 10 hours there easily. Honest Hearts and Dead Money are each about half as big as Old World Blues. Dead Money might take you longer to beat though, with all of its tedious gameplay mechanics.

it's not a matter of how much time you can spend in the DLC it's a matter of that i had an 8 GB update to download to a game i already had installed. its just one massive confuzzlement. and yeah it's on steam

I hate to link to another gaming site but your situation reminded me of this

something to entertain you while you wait for your 8gb update :)

It's not doing that steam thing where it says it's downloading a 8gb file but really it is just topping the install up to 8Gb is it?
