The first time I heard they were making Halo 3:ODST I thought the game is going to be horrible, but then I heard more details. Like theres going to be no Master Chief which made me smile, and that the game was going to be open world. Open world games became famous with GTA and just get better. The only bad open world game in my opinion was Far Cry 2. Far Cry 2's world was great but the amount of random enemies and no balance just made the game feel like a big fat steaming pile of crap. The world was amazing complemented by great graphics. Infamous is another open-world game. The open-world of Infamous was very dull and gave the impression of a serious quarantine. Unlike prototype which just gave the feeling like the military was invading a city full of infected people just to kill one person. Prototypes world changed from ugly to beautiful with just a few steps which made it feel like the developers gave no imagination in what a quarantine would look like. Saints Row 2 had a great open world with a mall, a power plant, plastic surgeons, and even an airfield with planes you could fly. Saints Row 2 had many thing you could do in the world like car surf and parachute. GTA IV has a great open world but the things you can do are limited to flying helicopters and going to strip clubs and biker hang-outs. But the point. I'm trying to make is that Halo 3:ODST is going to be an open-world that is going to require much imagination and I don't know if the developers have that imagination. Personally I'm looking forward to the games release because I love Halo 3, I want to see how bad the open-world is going to be, and I want th Halo:Reach beta. I would like to know if you think the ODST open-world is going to good or not? Also do you want to play ODST? And last but not least, do you look forward to Halo:Reach.

Ugh. Wall of text. Let's see...

No, Halo and an Open World will not go together, I may be proved wrong but I really don't think it'll work, no, I'm not looking forward to Halo: Reach, I don't actually know what half of this means and I'm not particuarly bothered about playing ODST, maybe I will, maybe I won't.

Imagine a Shadow of Colossus where you had to fight a bunch of smaller monsters while you tried to find each Colossus. That is basically what Halo 3: ODST is. You go from place to place fighting Covenant along the way until you find one of these Beacons(a detonator, a sniper rifle with a bent barrel, etc). These beacons take you to these linear flashback levels where you play as one of your squadmates. Once you finish the level you return to the nighttime city to look for more beacons.

If you play ODST thinking your going to get a an experience like you get in GTA or Saints Row your going to be disappointed. It really just amounts to choosing the order you want to play the levels in with a whole bunch of Aliens between you and each level.

Yeah, this. I think they're wrong to call it open world, it's bullshit.

Bungie haven't been calling an open world game. The term they like to use is non-linear and it seems to accurately describe ODST.

You run around a large area and can choose what order to the main levels, but being a Bungie game there are sure to be Easter Eggs and and other hidden objects similar to Halo 3's Terminals or skulls. I've also heard some bits that there might also be a fast travel system.

It's really just about going in with the right mindset. If you like the other Halo games and FPS games in general then you will probably enjoy Halo 3: ODST. If you are looking for
GTA: New Mombasa then your going to be disappointed.

I don't know much about Halo: Reach yet so I can't comment but if nothing else it should be appropriatley epic. Though as I said before I think Halo stole my heart as a trilogy.

As for ODST, it looks different to the usual Halo game so that's a good step in the right direction in some respects because it means they are innovating.

p.s I wish Bungie woul make a Halo game based soley on the Arbiter.

Halo: ODST looks cool. I mean, I will wait for the scores to come in before I rent/buy it, but still, I think if done right it would be an excellent break from the normal Halo fair. And I still Want to know WHAT THE FUCK HALO:REACH IS GOING TO BE LIKE

maybe a guided sort of open world, where you always travel with a squad, and any soldiers lost will be replaced by a soldier coming out of a building, and you always have the objective but you can move off on a side mission to collect ammo or find a vehicle.
also, perhaps a link would be helpful? just for verification, not like anybody's actually going to read it...

Its not open world, it's open ended. It's going to be an FPS, not a sandbox so don't go in thinking of it as Far Cry 2 or GTAIV or Saints Row 2. It will be as good as those game (At least I hope) but diffrent from them.

Oh and could you please clean up your post, it is a little hard to read.

Well first of all you prefer Saints Row 2 to GTA IV which from the get-go it, for me, describes what type of person you are. Second of all you're talking trash about a PS3 exclusive, InFamous, but seeing as your avatar bids that half-assed argument invalid I'm just simply going to say NO. In conclusion: You are a childish fanboy. Go away. As for ODST, I could care less about Halo 3. It is nothing but lackluster, in my book, in comparison to Halo 2. Gears of War 2, in MY OPINION, is a much better 360 exclusive title, reason being: It actually takes some skill, which is what I liked about Halo 2.

Hopefully it won't be TOO open...
Take the time to read through the first few posts; calling it open world is a misnomer, it doesn't make sense with what the game is actually going to be.
That's kind of what I meant.

So, him having a Halo avatar automatically makes him a childish fanboy?

I'm getting it on release day, and then playing through campaign on legendary with three of my buddies. Should be tons of fun. Too bad a lot of people are close-minded to the Halo series.

Don't you listen to Bungie? They've already told us that it will be both an FPS and awesome. I'm going to camp in front of Gamestop just to preorder it.

OT, ODST looks better than Halo 3. Mostly because of the darker environments, but there's something else about it that just appeals to me more. Still, I wasn't sold until Firefight was unveiled. Forget open worlds, I want Arena Survival with my friends.

I was kind of hoping ODST would be stealth based, then a slightly more open world would work perfectly. I was a little dissappointed to see that smeg all has changed between this and 3. They've even taken away your ability to use covenant weapons (just to annoy you Vrex) yet he still has a sort of shield (termed 'stamina')
Edit: Though the addition of firefight, as someone mentioned, is welcome.
