Sure, you're role-playing when you put yourself into the place of a player
Yeah that was the WHOLE point of my argument. Obviously PRG's are a genera, with it's own efining elements like stat biulding, and if we have to assign a game a genre it it's whoul be based on said elements. But like I said at their heart all virtualy all games have you play a role.

On a side note to the OP Assaines Creed is a decent game and if you have to play something then you could do a lot worst.

To be fair you didn't say anything about what defines a RPG. You gave examples, which really isn't going to help explain your point to him. The problem comes from the fact that the term really comes from the P&P era. As the games grow and evolve it becomes harder to define games into strict genres.

You say there are action RPGs. Then why can't an action game have RPG elements, because know there are RPG's with action elements. As you play the game you learn/get new weapons and skills, you play a role, and you do quests to progress. Would you say that Mount & Blade or Dark Fall isn't an RPG because it has FPS style combat? No, I didn't think so, and its not a black and white issue. There is no clear line that defines where RPG's end and where another genre starts.

No I wouldn't call Assassins Creed a RPG, but I wouldn't freak out at someone who said it had RPG elements.

OI!
I know I'm not helping the conversation any faster than any of you guys, but if there's a thread about trying to find a game more polished than Mount & Blade, shouldn't you just take your "What defines an RPG" topic into a new thread? Obviously the thread author came here for advice, and so many times I see things like this degrade into a completely different discussion.

Try Mount & Blade's 1257 AD mod if you haven't yet. It adds a bunch of historical accuracy for the factions and time period while remaining 'fictional'. Still no real quest content though, so it's all just big battles and such. Though you could try and form a small elite force of characters and take on bandits and deserters and turn the tides of other people's battles/sieges. That probably requires a good deal of imagination to construct some sort of narrative for yourself though.

Mount and blade has fireballs and necromancers. What do you mean non-fantasy. I mean the remake, I never played the original.
