Games that are desprite to play out like movies will often have open credits as well as the regular closing ones too. But sometimes, when they do it right, they can have some brilliant opening credit cutscenes. Like All Half Life games, they generally play out will the protagonist is on a train or walking past some big events as part of some tour. They work out really well and are quite enjoyable.
As with COD4. Playing through the eyes of the President, you watch your city and home go to waste as evil wins, only before getting shot in one of the best open credits in a game to my mind.

Yeah, those are the two I like best too.
The Bioshock opening, where you arrive in Rapture was amazing too.

My personal favourite was from Bujingai: Forsaken City/Swordmaster where the game just starts, no openings at all. Then when you clear the first level, the credits begin showing what you just did, replaying how you fought the opening monsters in different camera angles while the credits come on. I thought it was the most creative way of doing the opening credits to a game.

I'd second the Bioshock one as well. Expecially with Andrew Ryan's voiceover narrating.

i am going to go out on a limb here and say

The legend of zelda: ocarina of time.

it gives you this feeling of peace right before you turn into this voiceless, characterless, baddass fighter man that fights for peace by killing every single bad guy in the room.

or maybe its just me.

the whole game is just epic

The opening credit sequence of Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is pretty cool. Gives you a nice sense of place and atmosphere while making clear that you play as a prisoner.

MGS 3 was also very cool, from playing an entire (small) mission before the intro really starts, to the arkward, but cool Themesong to the fully interactive Intro CGI, it all had a perfect James Bond ish vibe to it.

Shadow of the Colossus also starts really epic, even if the intro is a tad bit to long (like everything in the game, it really takes its time)

Same goes for GTA IV, abeit in a different way.

The general setup on the start of every Mission in Killer 7 was cool too, i guess Suda 51 just knows how to get his intros right.

Other than that, i second Bioshock and COD 4

if my memory serves me correctly Fahrenheit or Indigo Prophecy if you prefer had an intriguing opening sequence that really made you want to get into the story.

Games that do this correctly can really help you get immersed in the experience. When the game plays like it's a movie, it can be really interesting. It makes you feel like more of a part of the game.

The New Hope-esque intro was what got me into Knights of the Old Republic and made it feel immersive and exciting to me. After that so-similar scrolling text, my vein-faced icemonster felt just about as important as Luke Skywalker (and twice as sexy, despite and in fact probably because of the face-veins).

Having just played MGS4, i'm going to support it for sheer asskickery... but then again i'm a diehard fan and it was bound to impress me if it was an etch-a-sketch picture being moved about in front of the camera.

Whether or not they're good, it's a tradition for me the first time I play any game to watch the opening credits all the way through. Something I've been doing proudly since, well, I don't really remember the first game with an opening cinematic that I played...possible one of the Ninja Turtles Franchise on SNES.

I remember the first time I saw the Neverwinter Nights Opener...that was epic.

I think if a start screen is epic enough, it will make you see the beginning of a game through rose-tinited glasses until you're immersed enough not to care about how mediocre a game might be.
