I don't know if it's because i am the last Jrpg fan on the escapists, but World of Final fantasy was released earlier this week and i haven't heard a thing about it on this site. I did make a thread regarding the dungeon demo but that died with only 3 posts.

Regardless, I'm going to give my impressions of the game. I haven't completed it yet, so take that into consideration.

The short version is: if you enjoy jrpgs, don't mind the cutsey aesthetic buy this game now. This is the final fantasy 15 we deserve even if it's not the one the people want.

Long version. As a long time fan of Final fantasy, Squares fall from grace has been a little disheartening. From the two mmos ( FF11 and Ff14) the slightly above average FF12 and the absolutely mediocre ff13 to ff13-3, Square has been pretty off the mark with it's mainline Final fantasy releases. Then here comes out of seemingly nowhere world of final fantasy.

Everything about this game screams great Jrpg. I in all honesty felt like a kid again playing this game. The wonder of traversing an absolutely gorgorgeous world, living it's story and following it's characters reminded me why i love Jrpgs in the first place.

The music is absolutely stellar. For fans of older FF titles you will be hit with nostalgic slight remixed scores of your favorite games. Never does the music get old or boring, it compliments the game so well.

The aesthetics ooses cuteness. If you aren't carful, you may get diabetes from how cute this game is. I know it may be a turn off to some people, but personally i love it and it works so well. The areas are absolutely beautiful and it makes you want to traverse it's terrain.

The characters are okay and is probably the biggest flaw in the game. The main character are lann and Reynn. Lann is the stereotypical Dumb comic relief character and his twin sister Reynn is the intelligent reliable one. The game is somewhat selfaware and try to write the two characters to be as likable of possible. But Lann is dumb as a bag of bricks. Unless you like dumb protagonists, he will definitely get on your nerves.

Now combat. The combat is amazing. It can be easy or more difficult depending on the combat settings you chose. You have a battle speed of 1-5 where 5 is the fastest. you also have the choice to have the combat on wait , semi- active or active. On wait enemies will stop while you are deciding on your action. On semi-active enemies will wait their turn before acting while you are deciding your action. And on actives enemies will proceed with their actions in realtime regardless of what you are doing.

The combat is a mix of Pokemon, in the sense that you can capture monsters to use on your team. a mix of grandia , with the way the turns work and traditional final fantasy, with your actions. The combat seems simple but there is room for a lot of depth. I won't go into the mechanics in detail but, if you aren't careful you WILL die, especially if you are playing on active mode.

All in all this game is a definite gem and shoulf be in the library of any fans of finak fantasy or Jrpgs in general.

I'm not a huge JRPG fan but I do have a history with the Final Fantasy series. I had been looking forward to this game but I didn't realise it was out until today. I played the Vita demo (I don't own a PS4) and it seemed cool but unfortunately the framerate was kind of shit. Not a big deal gameplay wise since it's turn based but visually I found it quite distracting. I have seen footage of the full version and it doesn't seem to be as bad (or at least it's not bad all the time) so I figured I'd take a punt and buy it. My local stores didn't have it though so I had to get it online. I'll report back later if I remember.

Is there an option to set the battle mode to that of FFX? During the demo I was utterly annoyed at having to sit idly by, having to wait for me or my enemies to enter commands, and that was even with holding R1 to speed things up.

I have it laying right here ready to be played once I got my Skyrim fix. It's nice to see Final Fantasy have a bit of fun with itself again.

Only have two problems with this game, I watched the trailer and it had some cutesy creature who kept putting "the" in front of words and it drove me insane, don't even know why but it's just really jarring to me ... like when people say "I did good" no you didn't, superman does good, you did well. I know I am petty grammar nazi with bad grammar haha

The second thing is, I was watching some guy play it and he had animals stacked on his head like tf2 hats and it was super weird, why are they piled on his head and not, I dunno, stood behind or next to him?

Unfortunately No. This game has more of an ATB ( active time battle) system than a true turn base system a la FFX.

Were you playing on the " Wait" battle mode? IF you change it to " semi-active" (recommended) or active it speeds things up considerably. It also really helps if you crank the battle speed to 5.

The fox creature (Tama) is suppose to have a verbal tick in the Japanese VO of the game. Apparently from what i read, they translated the verbal tick over to the english version. Personally i find it cute, but i can see why it would annoy some.

The machanic you are talking about is called " stacking" and it is the central part of the combat. It also gives the combat a lot of depth.

Basically the way it works is you have 3 types of monster sizes, Small medium and Large. The main characters can transform between Medium ( chilbi form) or Large ( normal form). To make a long story short. When you stack monsters you inherit their skills , stats, strenghts and weaknessess. You can unstack but your allies will have lower stats than of they are stacked. It will also leave you open to AoE attacks. Note that stacks can be knocked down, stuning you for a short periode. Enemies as well can stack on one another. The same rules apply to them.

Which is a shame 'cos I would have bought it and played the hell out of it, however one is fucking annoying and the other makes the game look beyond silly, the guy I was watching had a dragon and digimon looking bird on his head and I instantly thought "nope!".

Lemme toggle the "voice tick" off and put my pet/hats on the ground and in the case of them being "knocked down" they just get knocked off screen and then they can waddle back on or whatever but I'm not looking to be the the weird animal wizard from the hobbit films with crusty bird shit in my characters hair....

Went back to the demo and dug deeper into the settings, and yeah, "semi-active" did seem to help a lot, having character's turns pile up during the attack animations and command inputs lead to an almost uninterrupted flow of commands, although I did notice that in this mode the order of execution of commands went out the window, which was rather disheartening.

If you are brave try it on " active" mode. It becomes a race to imput your comands as fast as possible, because the enemies never stop. I'm currently playing on active because it prefer the speed and dynamic pace, but be warned it's not for the faint of heart.

To be honest those are the top 3 complaints I've heard on the game, the third being that ecounter rates are too high.

Unfortunately, for the verbal tick to be turned off, you'd literally need the voice actor to redo his lines for the whole game, which isn't likely. However, while i haven't tried, maybe playing the game with the japanese voices make it better. i would recommend you at least try the demo to see if it's something that might interest you when the price drops.

As for stacking, well thats the central mechanic, so unfortunately there's nothing to be done there. The thing is individual monsters ( when knocked down) can die, so having them off screen isn't really an option.

I'm planning to do a " Nuzlocke" run for World of final fantasy when I'm done my first playthrough. it could make things so much more stressfull.
