I'm an Aussie, or at least that's where my shuttle crashed when I landed on Earth. So naturally I am aware of the stereotypes but really I like this country, it's flawed but still great and I don't mind the jokes being thrown at it.
Because if you can't saterise yourself, you have no identity.

In light of recent events, it occurred to me that many people have a warped view of my country. I mean, sure, the government has made some decisions in the past that are definitely..... Bad...... But, come on guys, level with me here; us Australians (most of us) are really very nice people. I'm pretty sure that the same goes for whatever country you hail from; there'll always be some assholes, and the majority will usually be great people. There are a few common misconceptions held about Australia, so let me clear those up right now for those of you who are really that ignorant (not many at all I'm sure):
- No, amazingly, we do not ride Kangaroos to and from work/school, but yes, there are Kangaroos in Australia. Huh.
- Wrestling crocodiles isn't on our list of daily activities, at least not mine.
- Yes, our ancestors are mostly convicts. But, despite this, no, we are not all convicts, and your endless slew of jokes on this matter are really.not.that.funny.

The point of this thread, really, is to get my fellow escapists' opinions on Australia, and it's people. Questions are also appreciated. Thanks.
Again this is another one of those posts that in some way manages to infuriate me. This is possibly because there is just sheer assumption that I(or others) have wild opinions about the island nation. I'd appreciate that this madness be stopped. All I know is, Australia is a very big island nation, and actually has a natural beauty. But in the end, I could care less about what they do, unless it in some way effects me.

Being American and obviously having a poor sense of geography combined with keen ethnocentric mind-set I feel that you were way cooler as a penal colony.

The first two of those points were obviously somewhat jokes, the third one serious.

Well your missing out then and will for a long time, as those bastards can take a beating before they die (seen a hunstman take 2 full spray paint cans, 3 cans of baygon and a deoderant flamethrower and still scurry off, albeit singed and multi colored)
Worst huntsman I had to deal with was the size of a smallish plate. That fucker took so much mortein
Mortein?
WEAK.

Shoe-soles are how a MAN does it.

[sub]Shit, double post.[/sub]
You ever tried to beat in plumbing pipe with a shoe that doesn't have steel caps?

Edit: to explain the pipe was the old piping we had to fix when it went bust and started causing problems over the house because of rust holes

Push it off with a book or something.
Would've, but, I.... Argh. I was 9 or 10 at the time anyway. Bit of a pussy then. I just kind of went to town spraying it.

eh not like it's going to hurt you anyway, the bigger the spider the less lethal it is to humans (most of the time) for anyone actually worrying about Hunstman don't, they love warmth and will usually go out of their way to avoid you anyway

and before it is asked yes i come from a family of arachniphobes

I've genuinely never heard ANY of these.
Ever.
In my whole 16 years of being.

Learn to see the funny side of stereotypes of your country.

I'm Scottish. Think of all the stereotypes that come along with that. If I can laugh it off, no matter how many times it gets repeated (which it does, regularly), so can you.

Real men pick up a harmless spider and place it in the garden. ;)

I find all the jokes about Kangaroos and Croc wrestling funny actually, but remember the shrimp on the barby thing actually belongs to the Yanks! We call them prawns thank you.

I tend to be quite merciful with pretty much every insect/arachnid I find these days :p and I never quite understood the shrimp on the barby one, it'd just fall through the grill :(

My thoughts on Australia:

1) It is a big island/continent.

2) ......It has... people on it...

3) ....Some of those people are really...nice...

4) Mad Max was pretty entertaining...

Sorry, I don't think about Australia all that much. Might like to visit it someday, if that means anything.

My sister is a globetrotter by vocation, and she has many friends in Australia. She thinks very highly of you people.

"You people?" (righteous indignation included)

Oh dear.
