No, in the U.S. Generally the majority of us are a bunch of assholes.

Oh and the time I went to Australia I thought it was great. Nice people and beautiful women who like Americans. I will definitely go back again.
Oh, I stand corrected then :p. I guess I'll find out when I eventually travel there. (I hear American women like Aussie accents...?)

Yeah, the whole Michael Atkinson debacle and the internet censoring are the "bad government decisions" I meant. Shit sucks : / And yeah, snakes and spiders. Well, ignorant of the fact that I have to put anywhere between 0 and 3 spiders outside in a week, and that there is a snake in my lounge-room (my pet snake), you won't find yourself in any life threatening situations unless you go looking for these arachnids/reptiles, I assure you :) (There are lot's of snakes in the outback though, believe me)

Also, why don't you ride kangaroos to school and work and back?
They're actually quite dangerous. Their tails are ridiculously fucking powerful and their claws could slice you open with ease, and they aren't even carnivores. Aside from that they wouldn't be able to support most peoples' weight and still hop around anyway :p

There are certain things in life that just go without being said. Which means I shouldn't have to be saying this right now but everything you described in your OT is what I am talking about. My advice to you is to just not care so much. You decide what your own image is. Adding to that, people who suffer from poor self esteem often cause unnecessary problems.
Please, don't accuse me of such things, I'm so insecure -sadface-

Camels have an extremely powerful bite, yet people ride them.

Can't train them, and ride them on their backs or something? >_<

Why does everyone think Australia is dangerous? I don't know anyone who has ever been attacked by any sort of poisonous or aquatic animal. Bit other than that thank you all for your kind words, yes we are the nicest people on earth, yes our accent is awesome and yes we are all totally bad ass and totally modest.

Halaxis said:
I actually have no qualms against Australians. In fact, most Australians, partly because of the stereotypes, partly because of the accent, partly because I have family there, are total bad asses.

My only thing is the racism in Australia. Yes , it's there, and not toward Blacks. Its against us Indians. I can understand why, a bit. The outsourcing, taking of jobs, different culture, our really annoying accent and the ever funny head-bob, the penny-pinching etc. but really? Attack defenseless Indians?

here is a BBC link from 11/9/10: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8449731.stm

and another: http://www.asokans.com/racism-against-indians-beaware-australia/
If you decide to come over and are worried about that just do a bit of research and try to go to a nicer area. The area where that happened is not a very nice place. But keep your eyes out for drop bears and bogans.

I wish we could say that for New Zealand.
Man, if the sheep of NZ ever came into contact with the T Virus, we'd be stuffed to say the very least. Been a New Zealander I've been raised to dislike austrailins for reasons I've long since forgotten, but I do like a bit of rivalry now and again.

I suppose people making jokes about us being convicts could be countered if they were American. Make jokes about them being Puritans.

Most of the people I've met who genuinely thought these things were over the age of 60, and weren't exactly the brightest crayons in the toolbox. It does amuse me when people are surpised that it's quite hot in my particular area, when all the available information says 'THIS PLACE IS HOT

Nobody's ever tried to ride kangaroos because they're dangerous fuckers- they've been known to attack people, and I'm fairly sure their skeleton and musculature isn't strong enough to support a person's weight and still let the animal move relatively normally, like you see with horses and cows.

Yes I have a question.

Did you really think anyone had those misconceptions about Australia? Come on, we are not stupid enough to think that you ride Kangaroos and wrestle Crocodiles. I've never heard anyone say that outside of a joke.
Actually the wrestling crocs bit is true, seriously it is, but you have a team of about 6 others with rope and some duct tape.

Oh and there is always armed guys there.

Go out to where they have red kangaroos, they get to 2 metres tall. They lure dogs into dams to kill them.

They kill people by grabbing your shoulders with their arms and slashing you in the stomach, they tear your abdomen apart. Not very nice.
My advice keep to yourself and they will keep to themselves. But there area various other species of kangaroo around Australia that are about the size of a 10 year old kid, in some places you can even touch them. Mostly though they are very timid.

Australians are complaining about jokes and insensitivity?

I come from New Zealand and I'm currently living in Australia.

Don't talk to me about Nationality based jokes.

As a pommy who was in Australia for some time, I have nothing but the deepest of respect for Australians. Yes the accent leaves much to be desired (unless it's a girl in bed) and there are endless water restriction making my lovely 30 minute showers reduced to five, the seasons are bloody reversed, most insects can kill you, some spiders are the size of my face, it's very hot and not very humid, ski mountains are really ski hills (I am looking at you Threadbo) and the flies in summer are a nightmare.

It still has a certain charm though, I can't put my finger on what but something about Australia..it invites you to come walkabout.

just off topic quickly .
from what i can gather from teh descriptions, you were in Queensland. am i right?
No, I had daylight savings where I was. I have been to Queensland among other places in AU but that was not where I was located.

'twas the ACT.

Damn you stupid South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, I hate you so much, I want the good Left for Dead 2, not this shit one
Nevermind, importing is cheaper anyway
The price of video games as far as I know in the USA is around $50-$60 (correct me if I am wrong) so how come Australians have to pay $110 for games when the exchange rate from AUD to USD is currently at $0.92 WHERE IS THE LOGIC!!!
In other words I can go into a store and pick up a copy of Bayonetta for $110, or I can get it from Play-Asia.com for $70 including postage, what you think I am gonna do! specially since now the PS3, 360, PSP and DS are all region free (unlike the Wii, PS2 and Xbox) it makes it alot easier and cheaper.

But in regards to the Jokes, I think other countries dont really think that about Australia (except the dumb ones)
BTW, I remember people in the States being offend by something we had on 'Hey Hey it's Saturday' in a segment like what the Yanks call 'The Gong Show' the skit was entitled Jackson Jive and it was 5 whites guys with black painted faces doing a Dance and music number for the Jackson 5
It was not supposed to be comedic or offence, just light hearted Amateur musical entertainment
And Yanks watch this vid and tell me what you think, I dont think it was that bad, but I also saw a piece of 'The View' and they were outraged about this, where as I dont see it any differently to when The Simpsons did that Australian episode with the Boot and showing the Prime Minister as a Redneck Yobbo or that we are all theives, so if our country can see the humor in that I dont know why the Americans cant see the funny side to this.

- Yes, our ancestors are mostly convicts. But, despite this, no, we are not all convicts, and your endless slew of jokes on this matter are really.not.that.funny.
Maybe the majority of your family were descended from convicts, but the majority of Australians are descended from those who immigrated in massive numbers during the Gold.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_of_Australia#Population

Population tripled in 10 years between 1848-1858, by a factor of 5 in 20 years by 1868.

170,000 (aprox) convicts were transported to Australia in 80 years, at least a million people immigrated in during the gold rush.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convictism_in_Australia

So while the criminal jokes are funny rest of the world, they're getting old.

P.S. Hey USA you guys had at least 50,000 convicts transported to your country as well.

These attacks are completely un-Australian, however there are a lot of misconceptions, for example people seem to assume it's organised racial attack from white Australians ala KKK, when the attackers in these different incidents span multiple nationalities. While the majority of course where white (they are the majority population), there have been Asian, middle eastern, african and indigenous attackers. (That sentence sounds wrong, I'm tired but it reads like I'm approving of equal opportunity villainy)

While some are directly race related many are crimes of opportunity, or affect some Indians perhaps because of the dangerous line of work that a lot are in (Cab driving, Petrol Station, night shift) I've had many discussions with cab drivers and boy does there job suck.

Well your missing out then and will for a long time, as those bastards can take a beating before they die (seen a hunstman take 2 full spray paint cans, 3 cans of baygon and a deoderant flamethrower and still scurry off, albeit singed and multi colored)
Why would you want to kill a hunstman spider?

No seriously, they are not poisonous and rarely bite anyone. Okay haven't sold you yet.

They eat cockroaches, a lot of cockroaches. If you have one in the kitchen you will never see a roach again no matter how filthy.

If ones in your bedroom, just do the glass and paper trick and relocate him outside or better yet your pantry. Again sounds messed up but you don't get any other creature trying to eat your food.

When I moved from the country to the city the first thing I noticed was that there are barely any bugs. Its still kinda wierd.
