Pros:
- Beautiful world
- Awesome soundtrack

The rest is mediocre at best. I would only recommend it to die-hard RPG fans.
Pretty much this. Also, the combat's kinda cool too.

I utterly adored Eternal Sonata. I liked the characters, I really enjoyed the plot, the world was absolutely beautiful. The only thing that gets me is the romance that went on without any sort of reason to it. I was so pleasantly surprised by this game, the combat was great and the soundtrack was amazing. It wasn't a particularly long game but it kept me hooked for 3 days straight.

Battle system: VERY fun.
Only 2 types of enemy per dungeon: Lame.

The story?! Umm.....Spending 20 minutes describing a village I CAN SEE ONSCREEN is insane. That and the first real bit of dialogue we get (right at the start) is a woman basically doing what I can only describe as mental child abuse. >_<

My girlfriend and I were stuck at a friend's house for a good hour and a half about a year ago and she wanted to play it. So we did. Then when the friends cam back, they watched her play for another half hour. At that point she put down the controller and said "I WANT to like this game. I really do. But what the heck?!" At which point the guy who owned the game dropped that tidbit about there only being 2 enemy types per dungeon. That's when my GF shut the game off and we both concluded that we didn't feel like seeing the rest.

To be honest, while the combat was somewhat enjoyable, the rest of the game (music and historical tidbits about Chopin himself notwithstanding) was pretty terrible. It was so boring that I basically had to push myself to keep playing. The plot was bland and cliché to boot, as well. I really wanted to like Eternal Sonata, but at best, my opinion on the whole thing comes down to a disappointed "... Meh."

It's a good game, short though.
The story is perfectly fine, it's just the concept is weird as hell.
Combat system is probably the most simplistic I have seen.
Enemy variety is low, but battles last only so long it barely matters plus you can avoid them by running around them.
Game isn't that hard except on certain bosses.(The Pirate boss it's ALWAYS the pirate boss)
Sound is good.
Voice acting is okay I've heard much worse.
That game needed a bit more work in certain area's but none of them really important.
I only rented it though, so I would suggest that.
Though it's pretty cheap anyway.
I would recommend this game over the likes of the FF 13 series.

Well, title says it all. Looking at current-gen JRPGs I haven't played yet, and I'm wondering if Eternal Sonata is worth checking out. I've heard kind of mixed things on it, so I thought I'd turn to my fellow Escapists and see what you all thought of this title.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't much care for it, to put it in the mildest possible terms. In fair terms, the game is shit. It's the worst game I've ever played, by far. It looks nice, and has a nice concept, but that's it. Having played through the game several times it's slowly paced, boring, has outrageous cutscenes (there are quite literally two points in the game where you have to sit through a half-hour brick of cutscenes. I estimate that, counting intros and outtros to battles, the actual game is 1/3 gameplay and 2/3 cutscene), the story is absolute idiocy on a supreme level, combat is stilted and repetitive, the dialogue actually hurts to listen to. I have never before played a worse game, nor do I hope to.

I generally hate JRPGS, but I loved Eternal Sonata. Maybe that's because it isn't like many other JRPGS.

I enjoyed it for the most part.

The combat is interesting - a mix of real time and turn based that kept me interested - and the story in interesting if a bit odd.

My main issue was with arbitrarily bitchy boss fights. You can be getting through area encounters easily, and then hit a boss that is basically impossible until you grind for hours on the same easy enemies. And when I say impossible, I mean total party kills from full HP.

One in particular was annoying because the game force traded in several of the lowest HP party members that were the worst in the fight. And, since they were "returning" for the boss fight, you couldn't level them, change their equipment, or even pick the other two party members that fought with them - the other two were RANDOMLY selected from your current party, throwing all strategy out the window.

However, aside from stupidly annoying boss fights, the rest of the game is really fun. Although, I never actually finished it... got stuck on a boss fight. :D

Finished it and started the game+ option(monsters are much stronger). I stopped after getting 1 hitted by a boss several times. Also one of the first bosses is weirdly enough a bit overpowered(The tales series has the same kind of problem).

The cutscenes can drag on a bit though. My wireless controller shut down during a cutscene >.<

The game and story are (in my opinion) interesting enough to do a playthrough. The story might not really make sense at the start but just go through. I liked a lot of the characters as well(specially Viola).

Played it finished and finished the main quest started to do the end game stuff got so far and just thought sod it this really isnt worth it, the story and characters are mostly dull and forgettable while the combat while initially fun soon reveals its limitations and you soon find the optimum strategy against all the different enemies leading to extreme monotony in fact I found later combat more boring than the early stuff probably because I had it figured out by then which is in stark contrast to most JRPGS that have boring combat to start with and then ramp it up.

To be fair I was glad the game was over when I had finished it, its not terrible by any means just mostly very mediocre with a few nice touches thrown in but it is better than something like Blue Dragon. If you are desperate for a JRPG to play and can find it cheap by all means give it a go but really there are far better JRPGS out there this gen and before I dont regret playing this game but its hardly an experience I remember fondly either.

I am struggling to remember specifics about this game as it was such a long time ago I played it.

There are decidedly better JRPGs this gen that have come out. The mannequin style animations really took it down a notch for me. What console do you have?
I have a PS3. Have FFXIII and XIII-2, Resonance of Fate, White Knight Chronicles 2,Star Ocean The Last Hope, and Nier.
