I'm running on XP and it works pretty good but I really do need a new computer and I guess stop supporting XP would be good and bad.

XP is old, we need more games to take this stance. If you want to play games and complain about them dropping XP support, get Windows 7.

I made this topic as a sort of companion topic to my (opinions on Windows 7 topic in off-topic disscussion, but this more focuses on this one specific thing.)

So what's your opinions on games dropping Windows XP support.

Well not many games have yet though it seems like in the coming years, less and less games will support XP, such as Battlefield 3, Just Cause 2, and shattered horizon (probably more but I don't know) and so what do you guys think? Is it a bad more or good move?

Imho, its a good thing? Why? Becuase if games keep supporting XP, sure it will have a longer life-span but it is holding back development and so games need to include DX9 support, BF3 will only support DX10/11 most likely then it will be a game that really pushes the limits due to it not being pulled back by the limits of a 10 or so year old OS and DX.
its a dumbass move, I mean, LOOK AT THE VALVE STATS FOR PEOPLE WHO USE XP!!!! I think its over half the people.
XP users actually make up less than half of all Steam users, as of quite some time ago (I don't remember the exact date, but it's definitely been a while). So the percentage has likely shrunk even more by now.

Anyway, yeah, it needs to go. 7 is inexpensive, and much better than either XP or Vista. There's no REAL reason not to upgrade.
1, its not a huge over taking, nor was it in may a little over xp users

2. it actually does cost a lot, 150$ in fact if you don't get it included with your computer.

It's 9-years-old, and now succeeded by an apparently superior OS (I still use Vista). ~£80 is not a lot to spend after that amount of time. MOVE ON.

The only reason PC gamers get away with still using it is because of the consoles.

hm... I would say that is debatable(though might be reading that wrong) becuase Frostbite 2, the new improved engine of the BC2/1943 games, supports PS3 and 360 but just no windows xp, so its can be said that its not really becuase of consoles but becuase of so many xp users refusing to update.

XP is nearing a dacade in age. It's time has passed. People clinging to old software has been holding back hardware (chip architecture) and software design advances for the last thirty years. Let got the past, and the future will benefit.

Fix'd?

Anyway, the consoles are purely DX9, as is XP (although you can piss about with the config files to imitate DX10, but that's beside the point). Since most games are multiplatform then you have to accomodate the consoles, which means that people can stick to not paying for a new OS for X amount of time.

As such, even PC-exclusives like Crysis have to incorporate DX9 because so many users still used XP - although to be fair, DX10 and capable cards were fairly new at the time of release I believe.

If you're going multiplatform then you have to apply yourself to the lowest common denominator (basically, the 360).

As for Frostbite 2, I don't know about that but it didn't drop XP support because the consoles have sprung new tech. Perhaps they felt it was becoming redundant and not required to support it; you've still got to program for more than just DirectX when putting a game on different OS's.

I am still running XP but within the next week or so I am getting 7, I hope it's alot like XP. Unfortunately, I know it's going to be nothing like it.

Why do companies assume new = improved, leave everything were it is and nobody will have to learn a whole new system.

(Looking at you facebook, STOP IT! Or I swear to god I will get pissed off and do nothing about it!)
accutaly you will be surprised, I found the transition from XP to 7 a smooth one, it was not that different from XP.
I find it too shiny... it's harder for you to do what you want because you have to brush all the glitter out of the way first.

XP was just an OS, simple as that. It worked.

But, you know, can't have everything... :(
Windows 7 also works.

I use Windows 7 and it seems just fine for any game I've tried to play, old or new. So I say drop XP support for new games. If people really need XP for certain games, they can always install both OS's and switch to XP when needed.

Otherwise it's just going to hold games back. It'd be like if they scaled down Mass Effect 2 so it played on both the 360 and original Xbox.

I mean, come on. XP is 9 years old now. Let it go already. And with PC gaming you had to expect upgrade costs anyway. This time it's a software upgrade rather than a hardware one, but you still knew you'd have to shell out for upgrades to keep playing the newest stuff from time to time.

It really is time well enough that I buy a new PC; I guess developers are just keeping up with the times.... mind you, many games in the past few years still have Windows 2000 support so maybe this is a bit hasty.

I'm using Windows 7 right now... but I want my XP back. ;_;

No XP support obviously doesn't affect me, but it still kind of sucks.

Well, considering hardware manufacturers are slowly testing the waters doing the same thing it's only a matter of time.

XP is nine years old. There comes a time when an OS becomes outdated.

I switched from XP to Win7, and I love it. Win7 is much faster, and the interface is great in my opinion.

"Dear Mr. Gates, I'm sure you're aware of the talk involving the notion of dropping Windows XP from the list of Operating Systems compatible with a number of games. To this, I say that every person is entitled to their choice or opinion. That is fine. With that in mind, I'm of the opinion that more reliable OS should be created before we drop XP from the compatibility line. Given that many people still use XP and do not want anything to do with Vista, the options would then be down to Windows 7, effectively. As this is really no good, I recommend you write a better OS first. Sincerely, INSERT NAME HERE."

I think that expresses myself succinctly.
