I'm in Newcastle Upon Tyne which is in the North East of England after having been born and raised a "soft southern shandy drinker" and lived in the beautiful city of Milton Keynes (people find both places amusing).

People in the North are definitely more friendly, they just are. The accent/dialect up here is tricky and sometimes I have to just nod and smile.

We have the best history. Tomorrow I could go and sit on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrian%27s_wall and the day after I could visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindisfarne What's not to love!

We are a diverse and inclusive people who largely believe in fair play and know how to queue. We are also pretty generous and would like to do the right thing, although we may not always agree on what the right thing is.

Oh and the wobbling on about Empires...yeah...people don't give a fuck about that, it belongs to the past.

Wait, what? People would be made a mockery of if they got a state wrong when speaking about the USA. How is this any different? Also, I think you'll find that most people in the UK don't give a crap about the 'empire'. That is ancient history. It was also deliberately disbanded because believe it or not, empires are actually a bad thing.

I choose to remain neutral in this thread as a true brit. That which I think of as bad in the UK must be ignored with a stiff upper lip (unless it involves animals for some reason).
That which I think of as right and good in this country must be down played is the name of the british understatement. I shall permit myself only one complaint, not enough zebra crossings, then vanish into the haze of teh internetz :)
Well played. :p You are indeed a true Brit.

I tend to see most English people as arrogant narcissistic pricks, that still can't get over the fact that they fucked up and lost their world empire. To their chagrin the USA took over where they left off at world hegemony and they're irate about it. Which then in turn leads them (the English) to horde websites across the internet and proclaim how they know all and are right about everything.
I'm tempted to believe that you're joking, mostly because I actually cannot believe somebody wrote that as a serious comment. I literally have no words to describe how ignorant and pathetic this is. If you really believe this, I feel sorry for you, because this is just so deluded and out-of-touch with reality it's pitiful. Not only do you lump every single person in the UK with one ridiculous personality, you -- hilariously -- suggest it's down to the loss of the world empire? And we're oh so distraught about the USA taking over? Are you fucking kidding me? How old are you? I, and absolutely nobody I know and have ever met, gives one fuck about that, because guess what? It's in the past, as in, history. Zero people care, except you, apparently. For the love of God, if you're going to irrationally hate on millions of people, get yourself a reason that isn't utterly laughable.
LOL well said sir!
This threads really interesting since its dawned on me that people think we care about reliquishing most of the Empire...i dont get that?
Like, as a very proud English teenager...i really dont care about any of that o.o it hasnt effected me in the slightest really hahaha.

Anyway, OT, i love this Kingdom, its my favorite place in the world.
I live on the outskirts of London and im not afraid of walking the streets at night, and i feel that all our problems can really be said for any country in the rest of the developed world, right?

Its a gorgeous, modern, always developing and exciting place to be, thats rich in history!

I just find the stereotypes pathetic when people take them so seriously; its totally ridiculous -_-''. but heyho, trolls will be trolls.

Anyway, i can ramble for ages but mi'tea an'crumpets are gettin'chilly, toodle pip!

The home of fish n chips, curry, tea drinkers, scones, great comedy and stiff upper lips.

Also home of the great natural mystery known as The British Summer Time that comes along every 50 years. I mean seriously it been more warmer and sunny the last couple of days in October than was for most of the actual summer.

I like the UK by and large, I just wish it wasn't run by Tories. It's a major blemish on an otherwise pleasant country.

Ever visited the UK? You actually crawled out of your box and seen what the world around you is like? I dare you to try visiting us one day and keeping that so-narrow-it-hurts mindset. It won't work trust me.
That last sentence couldn't be more misinformed if you tried. I find your lack of faith disturbing ;)

But yeah there's a wealth of culture to be found around the UK and I appreciate our diversity from Wales to Scotland and home again. We're 2 hours from the coast here in the Midlands and I love taking a train down to the "edge of the world" view of the sea.

*sigh* I did something like this recently in one of my senior HS electives. I'll do you one better.

USA - Those metric using cross-Atlantic people we have a love-hate relationship with.
Canada - Eh.
Everyone in Latin America except for Argentina - They're an alright bunch.
Argentina - Nothing but contempt over the Falklands War.
Middle East - The little America.
India - The big America.
Sri Lanka / Ceylon - The guys who drink our tea.
China, Korea - What's the difference between you and America?
Japan - Who? Do they even have an embassy here?
Australia - *in undecipherable accent* They're an OK bunch of people. (you'd have to come up with a way to butcher it)

I really don't know what individual Europeans think of Britain, though. Those are the guys that'd know it the best. And words can't possibly describe the hate Ireland must have for you guys. But it should help with most of the global areas.
And this is what we think of you guys

1) We use both metric and imperial measurements. Imperial measurements were invented here! We mock America, but slightly (guiltily) admire a lot of what you guys have and do, and are jealous. BUT it's partly because of the glorified media from America making it look so awesome. Don't lie to me, I used to live there :p
2) Canada is place most of the society here know nothing about, as our media is too clogged up with UK/USA competition to get to know them. It looks too cold. The best exposure we get of Canada was in Cool Runnings.
3) Latin America.. yeah, that's pretty much right
4)Nowadays most people know Argentina for football. They lost the war, therefore they're the ones who stew over it.
5)Middle East.... loads of stuff there, while simultaneously nothing there. We're generally not sure which bit is in Asia, the less educated among us generally referring to the whole middle east as "where pakis come from"
6)They play Cricket there. Not many English people like Cricket (not as much as the stereotype boasts) but we love curries and 24 hour off licenses (which we associate them with) so we love India
7) East Asia- we have a close relationship with them, stretching back to the Empire and tea clippers. I'd say you were wrong about your classification between them. Japan and Britain have very close ties, and we are one of the few countries with political ties close enough to allow emigration there if we want. Something the USA doesn't. We are obviously close with China over the Empire thing- East Asia are particularly looking forward to the Olympics, a mixture of increased popularity follwing Beijing, and love for London (they're gonna be disappointed)
8)Britain generally loves Australia, more than they love us at any rate, but I think they prefer us to America. A LOT of ex-pat Britons live in Western Australia.

The European feeling towards Britain has changed over the years. They used to think of us as "British gentlemen" in the 50's, purveyors of art in the 60's and 70's, riotous bastards in the 80's and 90's and now they appreciate our movement into the union, making the EU the current leading world superpower (according to the CIA website), but resent us for our arrogance and pride. Which is understandable completely.

As for the Irish, well, you'll never find a nicer friendlier bunch of people. All but a few die hards have any sort of resentment, and most of that is directed at the other part of Ireland, as that is where the problems were. I live with 2 Irish people, one from Dublin, one from Belfast, and they are great and love it here. The Irish get over things quickly, and have no resentment on average.

We existed for hundreds of years before that, and will continue to for hundreds to come. Who was going to take it off of us? And do you know how we "lost" our Empire? We gave it a way in a fashion that still makes this minuscule nation a world superpower. In the EU, we are one of the 5 countries that make up the largest spending power int he world, and the influence of our "lost" empire still echoes around the world. Just like the language you are typing into your keyboard. I am not patriotic, but this country deserves a great deal more credit than you give it, and from every thinking person, it receives it. Go open a book and become less ignorant, if at all possible

Scottish people suffer from wounded pride that England is the richer, more successful part of the island.
Uh, what?

I shall rephrase slightly- Scotland hates that it always mistaken for England and not taken as seriously as it deserves for being a fantastic country full of it own unique culture and history.

The above is still true though

as a resident of 15 years, I can say that this nation is pleasant if rather dull, the trick is knowing where the good stuff is.

Anyway, getting around to my answer to the OP, at last...

I've lived in England all my life and it's... well, okay. I both love and hate the UK as a whole. There's a lot to learn from our history and despite the usually bad weather, I love the countryside and the atmospheric settings we get. I'm proud of our NHS and whilst there are many, MANY flaws in our political system, I feel that it generally strives for fairness. You can't really judge the people because there's good and bad in every country, but I suppose I must admit my main concern is that we're slowly sinking further into consumerism and there's a rising trend in apathy. That said, there are still a lot of decent folk and I'm proud that we're one of the leading countries in foreign aid.

We're far from perfect but we've got a lot of good to offer, just like anywhere else.

For the last fifty five (approx) years the notion of English (British being something else and equally complex) national identity has been in a state of flux and change due to a foreign influence, namely American.

p.s. Did anyone expect this post to be a racist rant about a mythic "muslim invasion"?

p.p.s. Not saying the change is necissarily a bad thing, over the past ten years American TV drama has been going through a golden era (The Sopranos, The Wire, Big Love, Six Feet Under, Mad Men to name a few) while almost all English TV drama has mostly been emulating the worst of american drama ('CSI lite' trash with MTV editing). I've been reading the BFI book on 'Our Friends in the North' which cites it as the last great British drama incomparable to anthing since in terms of its production values and narrative complexities, the last in a trend that started (in my opinion) in 1978.
Well you did say anything ;)

EDIT: Like any civilised economically stable (reasonably) country we don't use the death penalty. Technically (I think) it still exists for high treason but there is no evidence to suggest it will actually be used.
