I realized today that very few games allow you to turn elements of the HUD on or off. Both Assassin Creed games do, and so does Red Dead Redemption and Operation Flashpoint, but I couldn't think of a single other game that I've played lately that gives you the option to disable parts or all of the HUD.

Do you think that more Games should allow you to, and what other games can you think of that incorporate this functionality.

Lots of older games allowed you to change or disable aiming crosshairs, as far as I can remember. I like it when a feature like that is incorporated, because removing the HUD and playing on the hardest difficulty is always fun for a while.

TF2 lets you completely design you own HUD, as do all source/valve games.

I can't really think of any games that needed it, because if it needs it there is a mod to do so. Hud mods are very common.

I think it should be optional in every game. It should go hand in hand with subtitles.

Allowing the HUD to be turned on or off with the press of a key should be an option (because it's extremely useful for taking screenshots), and so should the ability to disable specific elements of the HUD, most importantly the crosshair.

I think Silent Hill 3 had some elements for getting off some icons in the game, which may be considerate visible parts of invisible HUD.

But no, I haven't seen any game that let's you turn it off, at least on the PC.

I like having a choice. It would make the game more "real" if you had to constantly be aware of how much ammunition is in the gun you are holding without having a convenient gauge to tell you. I don't think Metriod Prime had that option...

I'd prefer that only important parts of the HUD can be seen when you need them, honestly i can't play games with purely no HUD it's not a challenge it's annoying

How is Operation Flashpoint?

OT: I think little touches like optional hud, seeing your feet in first person games, and ESPECIALLY being able to switch up the keys, is very gamer friendly and [with exception of the feet) is fairly easy for the developer to do. Which is why it's inexplicable as to why they aren't there.

Blazblue let me change the buttons. So when I played it with my friends they'd get angry because they are used to a diff control scheme.

I'd say it should be an option, purely for those who want the HUD taken down or disabled or whatever. That being said, I would never do it myself. I like having the HUD, all that information about the character's status, the cross-hair on shooters, and so on, all in one easy to find place. It's just so helpful, so I'd never willingly disable the HUD. But for those who would, it should be there as an optional thing...

It makes me cry.

The game could have been so good, but it's glitchy as hell.

Also, the gameplay centers around Squad-based action, which could be really good if it had decent AI or Squad commands. The Friendly AI is some of the worst I've ever seen. In the brief time I had it, I lost count of how many times I got blown up with a rocket or pegged in the back of the head by a grenade thrown by my squad because they don't have the simple programming to not fire if you're in their way.
The AI could have been forgiven, though, if you could control them well. Unfortunately, you can't. Countless times, they took cover on the wrong side of a wall, or behind a different wall entirely. And don't even get me started on the time I fought for 10 mins to get them to take cover inside a house, only to have them run right out again as soon as the enemy was in range.

So, yeah. I really want to like the game, but it's really only worth it if you can get other people to co-op with you. Otherwise it's just an exercise in frustration.

I feel your pain brother, this is exactly how I felt about Far Cry 2. I was so excited it looked like it could be the greatest game evar and then it just fell apart. It was like a wonderfully prepared meal, but the wine sucked and you had to eat alone.
