is this a good or bad thing? does steam have a monopoly that needs some competition..are EA just being dicks?

I cant say much since I (would you belive it?) but my PC games retail

now I dont know if this is the case or not but I fully expected with Alice:madness returns to have to use "Origin" or whatever it, just like when a game usues steam (esentailly asll its doing is taking a whole chunk out of the download)

but no...aparently not..dont know if this will be the case with any other EA games...

Personally....I don't think it'll work all that well.

Steam just has a shit ton of goodwill surrounding it. It also has tons of games from TONS of publishers and is very indie friendly. Oh, and it's got the most mindblowing sales ever. All the freakin time.

It'll be hard for EA of all people to compete with that.

EA is just trying to muscle in in my opinion. Steam will hold the line because they've been there for a while and they know what they're doing. Plus they don't shoot themselves in the foot like EA seems to.

I'm sorry, I am rendered incapable of criticizing Steam for at least a month with these deals that just ended.

Steam has its work cut for it right now - it doesn't have too many annoying restrictions, gets easier and easier to use, has crazy deals. One mistake by EA, hell, one repeat of the shit tactics they used to limit piracy that just ended up hurting the actual customers, and Origin is going down.

I'm giving Origin a chance, mostly because it reminds me of Steam back before it started having too many server requests and not letting you play games in offline mode, and that whole Steam guard thing. Also, we don't want Steam to go unchallenged in digital distribution, now do we?

On that note though, I'm afraid EA will be too pushy with Origin and cause people to really dislike it. If EA required an Origin account in order to play console games? That would win the "unnecessarily inconvenient" award for 2011.

Origin is still in beta.

It would be unfair to compare an finished product (steam) to an unfinished one.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
the thing is that origin probably isnt the same thing as steam, at best its probably going to just be a ea downloader, at worst its going to be a personal store for ea and probably only ea

I say at worst because if ea does it and its moderately successful then you will probably see more publishers pushing their own stores and to run any damn thing you will have to have an individual resource sucking program open

I dont get why people keep saying this is good for competition, we already have impulse and d2d. not to mention steam already gives us fucken fantastic deals all the time, I mean there is pretty much nothing else steam could do to be a better digital distributor... well aside from get better customer support but to do that valve might either have to sell steam or go public, neither idea I am very fond of

besides, making a digital platform is hard, look at games for windows live if you dont believe me or the launch of steam for that matter, if the starwars mmo is the first game that will really use origin then you can bet your ass more then a few people will end up hating it since I will bet money it will be really bad out of the gate

We don't need Origin, but more competition with Steam isn't a bad thing. EA being dicks and not using Steam any more is only going to hurt them long-term. I won't buy a game that EA don't put on Steam.

Il only use origin if it becomes a requirment to play EA games, but going up against Steam is like taking on a speeding train with your face

I don't mind Steam having competition, but a douchebag company like EA isn't going to beat Steam anytime soon. I can't imagine any dev besides the ones owned by EA sending their products over there, and as big as EA is, it's not bigger than everyone else put together.

While I'm a big fan of steam, 146 games in my library atm. I'm not a fan of EA and it's practices, though they saved bioware from the clutches of microsoft, I've got the sneaky suspision that they are the driving force behind the simplification of their games. And I'm not looking forward to having to subscribe to yet another digital distribution platform. Looking at the big picture I think it will end up being a good thing. Seeing as the magic of the market forces only really work if there is active competition.

Let's hope they won't just focus on stealing market share from the other digital distribution systems (Steam, Impulse, etc) but that they also go after the retailers market share.

I planned on making a witty point, but then I realized my opinion would be a vocabulary-centric revamp of that cartoon D0WNT0WN posted.
Then I typed this for no apparent reason, and posted it...GENERALLY EVERY VIDEO GAME COMPANY, Y U ALWAYS MAKE POOR ATTEMPTS AT BEING VALVE/BLIZZARD?

If EA only releases it's games on Origins once it's released, I'll buy the disc version, add it to steam and continue being happy. IF they have some bullshit detector ( Wouldn't put it past them ) That stops you adding it to steam, I will burn kittens and puppies and then catapult the remains at EA's headquarters.

If its anything like EA's DRM they'll limit how many times you can install. I don't see myself buying from them so long as i can buy Mass Effect and Dragon Age from steam when they come out.

Origin can fuck off, to put it bluntly. Just EA making their attempt at a Steam/D2D. More ways for them to make money. ¬¬

It's good to have competition, but EA in charge of all your games... hell the fuck no, might as well go burn money instead.
