Origin vs Steam...what do you think?

Is there anything stopping people from having an account on both systems?
Because I'd do what I would imagine anyone else would do and use Steam to get most of my games from and only use Origin to get EA stuff that I really want.

I really don't think Origin is going to compete against Steam in any way. It's the same as bringing out a new MMo and asking if it will beat WoW. When you bring something out that does the same thing as something that already exists, you're not going to dent the previous thing's user base even slightly.

Origin =

Valve are a company who make good products that are worth selling, and will hopefully compete by out-doing EA, as Saibh said, because they know that making good products goes hand in hand with making money. They practice good business and evolve to understand their consumers. Even if they do take their time with games.

EA are being dicks on the other hand, plain and simple. I think Origin will survive, mostly due to untapped markets that EA trick into their clutches, the Steam crowd will stick with Steam out of loyalty or community or because Valve practice good business and the Steam crowd know what EA are like, Valve will have a serious competitor to make them better, and hopefully EA will keep shooting themselves in the foot

EA will only hurt themselves more and tarnish their already terrible Reputation. I have to admit I'm kind of a Steam fanboy....but I look at the history of EA and I only see a negative outcome for EA's 'Origin'. It's just their attempt to muscle their way into the online distributing market....they can't think for themselves.

And EA thinks they can win? There are other digital distributors out there, believe it or not, such as Direct2Drive, but none of them have the userbase or services that Steam offers(friends lists, join game features, groups, etc.). I for one will only get Origin for one(or two if this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111562-Battlefield-3-May-Not-Reach-Steam] happens) games, and that's only because it(they) is(are) Orgin exclusive.

Well to put my view into perspective, I will not be buying any of EA's titles that exclude Steam as a service. So at this stage it's looking like no BF3 for me, or any of their big new games on the horizon.

I don't understand why people keep saying that this is competition when it obviously is not. How can two companies(digital distributors) compete when the products they sell aren't the same. EA will not allow steam to carry its big ticket games and chances are EA won't end up carrying a lot of non-EA games on their service. That is not competition since you are not able to buy the product from both retailers. If you want to buy an EA game you'll HAVE to go to EA, if you want something else you can go to steam or elsewhere. There is no choice so there is no competition.

I dont know if this will have much of an impact on the retail sector...is origin officially out yet?

No, not BioWare break up, BioWare leave all together and start a new company, where EA don't tell them how to make their buggering games

Steam's main form of marketing is it's ludicrous amount of value deals and sales. I really doubt any competition will improve the situation for most gamers, nor would it survive very long.

I don't hate Origin because of some fanboy rage. I think Steam does need competition, although it's not like they abuse their monopoly. No, why I hate it is EA seem to be determined to force us to use Origin, instead of enticing us. Instead of taking Battlefield 3 off Steam, why not give some free DLC to people who buy it off Origin? Besides, prices are almost universally lower on Steam. I'm going to be ignoring Origin, unless they find some way to make me want to use the damn thing.

I'm actually surprised at the number of people that have a problem with STEAM and their "monopoly". I don't know if it's because we have rooted in our minds that one company dominating over all others is always bad, no matter what, or something else. I only really jumped to the STEAM bandwagon like 4-5 years ago, because of TF2, but I've never regretted a second of it. I'm not a Valve fanboy either, I don't even like Half-Life that much, and Counter-Strike was boring to me.

But since I've used STEAM as my primary method of buying computer games, I've been saving TONS of money on purchases. I can get 2-3 games for the price I was paying for 1 before. Plus, I get the community benefits, basically a free chat program in-game with my friends, regular sales, free updates and patches on purchases. And unlimited downloads for any purchases I made. They seem to be hitting the right notes on how to be successful. Even with the sales, the money they are making must be nuts with how many impulse purchases people make when they see a game for like 5 bucks.

Agreed. Steam is great, I honestly can't see the problem that people have with Steam. I admit that I'm relatively ignorant of business strategies and stuff like that, so that may factor into my oblivious optimism towards Steam.

Competition is good for keeping competitive prices for the consumer. Steam, doesn't really need competition to keep prices down though...

I'm giving Origin a chance, mostly because it reminds me of Steam back before it started having too many server requests and not letting you play games in offline mode, and that whole Steam guard thing. Also, we don't want Steam to go unchallenged in digital distribution, now do we?

On that note though, I'm afraid EA will be too pushy with Origin and cause people to really dislike it. If EA required an Origin account in order to play console games? That would win the "unnecessarily inconvenient" award for 2011.

Origin will defiantly go down. Why have another total rip off of steam just to play a couple crappy EA titles. EA as a company has been making stupid mistakes and "making things better for gamers" while in fact only having their own agenda. They will fuck themselves with Origin too.

Also you can play in offline mode? I always do.
Steam was getting bogged down with bullshit before, but now I love it more than ever.
No more problems with server requests or anything else.

As for being unchallenged, the only challenge that is welcome is one that makes the company go forward and try to be ahead and in that respect evolve. This isn't that at all. No reason to use something that is worse and behind by a wide margin.

Any monopoly corrupts absolutely, so alternatives are good. However, this isn't competition per se, it's just the establishment of more monopolies, because the games are locked into each system.

Steam will continue to reign supreme as it always has. Origin won't even come close.
