Okay so I've heard much about this Origin thing from EA. And frankly, I still don't know what it is exactly. Here is what I have heard though:

Its the EA Store
You have to download to play games like Mass Effect 3, even on console
Its incredibly unreliable as in, it could destroy whatever system its on.

Do my fellow escapists know any more about this? I could really use the help.

It's EA's store, yes, but it's also their platform now. It runs on top of any game you play, and can be brought up like a UI to invite friends(except in BF3) or chat with them or buy DLC or whatever.

Yes it's unreliable and slow.

Steam is much better and EA should still release their games to both platforms.

Does it cause harm to consoles? I'm still a little fuzzy on the details.

It's Steam without any trace of Valve on it. It's instead made by EA. Take that as you will. Also, it's fairly new, the same way Steam was once. And Steam had some criticisms directed towards itself.

That much I am aware of. My main issue is that it is a apparently a mandatory requirement for EA games for consoles. With that begs the question, why do both primary consoles require another store to access when they one at their disposal already? Those being PSN and Xbox Live. It all seems like a cash grab to me. And one with dire consequences it seems.

The Origin platform is for PCs only and doesn't appear on consoles. If you want to know what all the controversy is about I think Wikipedia sums it up pretty well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_(content_delivery)#Criticism

Thank you very much. Now excuse me while I run out and buy it.
