I don't have a problem with Origin, though I don't trust EA anyways. I don't use Origin because 99% of all my PC games are through Steam and I find it obnoxious to have to use a second program that could have just used Steam as well (ie: Battlefield 3). That said, I'm glad Kingdoms of Amalur is on Steam.

My thoughts exactly. I finally downloaded and installed Origin last week as I wanted to play Mass Effect and it would be cheaper to buy (£3) then to drive and pick up my old disks. Installation was smooth and linking my other EA games was quick and easy. I remember how many issues Steam had when it was first released and the outcry then was the same (if not worse) then it has been with Origin. Hopefully Origin will stick around and grow to be a good rival to Steam as they really need some competition.

People need to get over it.
Sure it lacks feature X, Y and Z that Steam already has, but hey, nobody is perfect, right?
And concerning the whole "spyware" deal, if you read the current EULA, it states all data is anonymous.
At the end of the day, it gets the job done, and that's what matters. I'm not gonna miss out on great games just because someone started a smear campaign against Origin on some internet forum. Of course I'd much prefer Steam rather than Origin, but you can't always get what you want, and it's not such a big deal in the end.

What bother me most though is people who've never tried it, yet use every opportunity and thread that has EA/Origin in thread title to spew out shit on how much they will never use it and refuse to buy great games because it's so utter crap and steals all your infoes ohnoes. Seriously, get over it.

i doubt they will be able to lock me out considering i dont use their forums/ online games. It looks like they have gotten rid of the non sueing clause then
It is still there if you are in the US, it is also there in the Australian version but I have been reassured by a lawyer friend who specialises in working Class Action lawsuits that it wouldn't stand up in an Australian court However EA would probably move to have any trial moved to California and that decision could go either way. If you are in the EU well congratulations that clause doesn't apply to you, but you have no rights to form a class action suit anyway.

I find Origin to be much, much, better than Steam when it launched, the old EULA was bad but the new one is fine. ME doesn't work offline for me, but then it never did it always had to do a online check at the start of the game then you could disconnect your internet and it would run fine. I had a connection issue last night and BF3 launched in the singleplayer when I tried to play some conquest, so that is as good as you could hope for there. FIFA 12 works offline too, I am yet to try the Shift games or NFS Hot Pursuit yet but I see no reason they wouldn't work. Better than Steam in that respect you don't have to be online to enter the offline mode.

I'm never going to use it because it's by EA.

You know, EA?

The greedy publishing company that hires talented developers just to suck out their creative souls for profit before throwing them to the dogs?

I know im in the minority here but Origin works BETTER then steam for me...

First off with steam i cant host or join most of my friends games unless we go to a 3rd party host (i.e an active lobby and hope we are on the same team)

2nd The offline mode for steam just does not work for me...origin it does. Steam wont play single player games like Mount and Blade, Shogun 2 or Sins of a Solar Empire

not saying steam is bad...its really good(as a marketplace with the sales) and if i knew more pc stuff i could prob fix it but i dont and with like 150+ games in my steam i dont want to delete it and reinstall it(as my friends tell me to)

I'm glad I found this thread as I've lately been a bit conflicted regarding Origin (I want to play Mass Effect 3 gorrammit!).

The OP's questions have so far echoed my own, but I have my own to add: while searching for information about Origin I came across a post (sadly, I lack the link at this time) that stated that even if you shut down Origin parts of it is still active, but undetectable for the average computer user. That is to say that you could probably see that it is running if you knew where to look, but just looking in the Task Manager won't suffice.

Is this the case? Can it run in the background without you knowing, even if you think you've shut it down?

Probably no more than Steam is. I'm pretty sure the average computer idiot using TM doesn't check the processes tab, just using the applications tab to do all of their shutdowns of programs. Steam does the same thing as well, as does every other program that you see in your background tab. So yes, it can still be running even if you hit the close window button.

Fair enough, although I got the impression that it was more sinister than that. Could something hide even from the process tab, though? (Full Paranoia Mode: Activated)

Also, captcha: teenrh Cathedral. Inglip's getting some competition?

I'm pretty sure it actually exits for good when you right click on the tray icon and tell it to shut off. If you just close to window, it will go to tray and tell you it's still running, so shutting it down from tray should just be enough for the average user.
Just checked myself, and nothing suspicious is going off after telling it to exit by right-click on tray icon.

I would love to get KoA: Reckoning. I would love to get Mass Effect 3. But...

Is how I feel about it. And Battlefield 3, for a bonus.

I'm not going to buy them until EA fixes that.

I'm not trying to defend EA here (erk) but are they really spying? I'm honestly asking. Are they spying more than Steam? From what I can gather, Steam only "spies" on things directly related to it while Origin in the beginning spied on everything and now spies on less. Does it keep to itself, like Steam, or is it STILL snooping around, trying to find out what your shoe size is?

This. so this....

As soon as EA stop ruining things and pulling a bunch of dick moves like that Auto banning filter, THEN and ONLY THEN will I ever consider buying a game from them.
