ALL the games listed here are great, and I am a sad panda more of them havn't been ported to the 360/remade/have sequels on an HD console.

:(
Indeed, I pretty much picked up the console for some of the well known exclusives that I never got to play, but it seems like the xbox has more to offer than I thought. I've added a bunch to my list. You people are making me poor ;)

there were no good games for the original xbox. PS2 ruled that era for a good reason. now if you want an underrated classic that was pure amazing, you have to go with "Vagrant Story"!

Odd World Stranger's Wrath is my pick. How could you not like a crossbow that shoot out little animal's and insect's at your enemy's.

There is no such thing as a console without even a single good game. Even the Virtual Boy had Wario Land.

Yes, Vagrant Story is good. Yes, I have it. Yes, it is also a PS1 game and thus a console generation off topic. Just saying.

the original xbox was in competition with the PS1 for almost half it's life-cycle. and yes, there was Halo and a few others. all of them are well known which is not what you are asking for. PC gaming was at it's height during this time and all the best of the obscure games were found there.

God there are so many, but the Warriors stands out. Loved every second of that game.

a winner is you. seriously, I love that game.

and I know it's still off topic since you wanted xbox games, but there's a sequel to phantom crash that konami made for the ps2, it's called S.L.A.I., also awesome.

Metal arms: Glitch in the systems pretty good, and long.
I second this, although you might be hard pressed to find good system link games now a days heh. Single player is still epic.

Dungeons and dragons heroes, magic the gathering battlegrounds, and wrath unleashed are all about 5 dollars now and will entertain you for a while. MTG battlegrounds is one of the best dualing games I have ever had the joy to play, and it doesn't actually use cards or anything so no worry there.

I guess I'll chime in and mention some of the XBox v1 games I own and love:
Jade Empire LE
Break Down - Awesome game, in my opinion, that's a mix of Matrix and Terminator for the story that's also more of a first person adventure game than shooter, mostly for the hand to hand combat segments and the feeling of being overly powerful by the end of the game.
Panzer Dragoon Orta - It was mentioned before, but it's an excellent on rails shooter. Plus, it has the original Sega Saturn game as an unlockable.
Dead or Alive 3 - Pretty good fighting game, I find it a bit better than DoA4.
Fatal Frame 2 DC - Again, another game mentioned earlier, but it is definitely worth picking up for the scare factor.
Pyschonaughts - Hilarious plot, great characters, and great game overall. A "definite must have" and often overlooked game.

I'd also mention Halo 2, but that's okay as far as FPS games go.

Red Ninja - Unfortunately unpolished but still a great concept with one of the best mixtures of action and stealth gameplay, where both are actually totally viable options.

Gladius - Absolutely brilliant turn based strategy game that escapes the common fantasy setting and instead skews towards using roman gladiators before delving into less common mythologies like Norse and Egyptian.

Enclave - Tough as nails 3rd person fantasy action game that, to me anyway, is sort of like the spiritual predecessor to Demon's Souls just without the RPG elements. You will die a lot, but you will love it.

Phantom Dust - An odd game that mixes something akin to a collectable card game with 3rd person arena based action gameplay. I'd imagine it was better played online against human competition, but it's still a tasty game in single player.

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders

RTS mixed with Dynasty Warriors in a Medieval fantasy setting. And HEAVY METAL constantly drumming in the background as you slay foes with your mighty poleaxe.

Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes - What if Dynasty Warriors was an RTS, and really fun? This game shows how. One of the few RTS games that works with a controller.
Looks like I got ninja'd with the sequel/expansion.

Metal Arms: Glitch in they System

Third person shooter with lots of weapons and plenty of challenges.

Midtown Madness 3

The BEST racing game on the original Xbox.
