Our children will n'er know the beginning, will not remember first and second generation videogames.

Good games are good games and survive the test of time, just like the classic movies. They where still good even without all the fancy special effects.

The only problem with video games is not matter how good the gameplay was, and the story was they can still be eclipsed by people who are used to story through graphics.

To me it seems that in much the same way that at one point in time, atleast a decade and a half ago, videogames had a greater depth in them because there was less focus on visual presentation than on making a well thought out story entertaining to interact with as in that same era were dying the final notions of when children's television programs always had a clear protagonist with a definitive moral dilemma which in the end taught a life lesson. I speak of course about Batman.
"The President has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?"
The video games of old weren't any deeper than they are today, that's just nostalgia speaking

Work kids through the classics in chronological order. Then they can both enjoy the good old games and have a perception of what it is that makes a good game and be able to seek out new classics.

And when I say work I mean helpfully guide, I don't mean "off to the coal mines with you" work.

Thoughts? Our children born after the NES, even the Nintendo 64 and I might even go so far as to the say the Dreamcast and Sony Playstation 1, do you fear for their sense of value and integrity? I know I do.
NES isn't really the first generation of video games, I'd say.

As long as people keep their old games and consoles for their children to play and learn which games are the REAL classics and in case there comes a time when the playback feature on consoles is dubbed pointless.

I can't see myself raising my kids to be gamers. I would expect them to be physically and intellectually fit, and that would mean reading, gaining an appreciation for classical music and literature, and playing sports with Dad outside (if I have a son especially, I'm going to be a hands-on parent). There are so many better things to do with one's time than play games, and even though I play a LOT it's more because I don't have the money to take up another hobby like model railroading or bowling---games are, for a price-to-time comparison, cheap.

My children (when I will make some the old fashioned way) will most likely be hovering around in cyberspace shooting rail guns out of their fingers, and sometimes when eating, and I ask them if they ever played Starcraft 2, then they will say : ''Oh dad, that is like a fossil (at which point I will add: ''A perfect, fossil)''.

But no, thank GOD they don't have to live over the times that we did. Old games were not good (except for some of them) they were old and ugly and boring. The more beautiful the games got, the more I wanted to get my hands on them.

Before bending to nostalgia, try replaying some of those "gems".

I think this is something every generation goes through. "The kids won't understand how awesome XYZ was!" I'm sure our parents thought it about us, though not necessarily for videogames.

For every good old game there are 5 that suck, same with the current generation. Best to get an emulator I hear, so you can sort the shit from the diamonds.
meh i have all the ones i thought were good so no emulators needed....

Honestly, some days i prefer the older looking games to the new pretty ones because of the replay value. Half the games now I barely even want to play through for the first time.....
