With gun laws nowadays it would be hard to take on the US Army but do you honestly believe in today's world that if enough people wanted change to that level that the military (which is made up of ordinary citizens) would fire on their own people? I think not.
I think so. In fact, they already have.

Kent State. Ohio.

There will always be soldiers ready to obey orders, no matter what they are.

Governments should be afraid of their people. Our ancestors didn't fight tyranical dictactorships (eg. Nazi Germany) so that we could live in one.

Fear... you? No. Alan Moore keeps getting dragged up into this as well. Different scenario all together. I assume you're talking about the American government? Well then, taking away your guns is a good thing like a father taking away a child's toy they can't be trusted with.

Governments shouldn't fear their people, they should listen to them and work for them. Governments should neither controle (see what I did there. Yeah, wit) their people either. The world isn't black and white with no two options. And frankly, the US government is doing neither. A few republicans are crying out that he's a fascist communist (a quote I've actually heard) and everyone seems to make a topic of it. Use your brains.

The argument that if guns are illegal only criminals will have guns is, of course, a tautology. That is, it's worthless. The real argument should be, if guns are illegal, how many criminals will have guns? The answer? Less than now.. because it'll become more risky to get them in, and as such, more expensive (even on the black market), and as such, rarer.
Outlawing guns effectively denies law-abiding citizens the right to self-defense. Sure, it might mean a few percent less criminals would be armed, but then everyone else would be helpless before them.

The point is to stop accidents. I'm sure most gun related deaths in America have been caused out of anger or accident.

So much Alan Moore worship...

V was an anarchist. He said that governments should fear the people because he is an anarchist, not a democracy-supporting freedom fighter like the movie made him out to be. Conversely, "people should fear the government" is a fascist point of view. I would just like to make it perfectly clear that if you support that statement (governments should fear the people), you are most likely quoting V, agree with his stance on politics and support anarchy.
Thank you! My quote above also mentions the fact that the situation was also utterly different. The US isn't living in a fascist run state with thought control police and are no where close to it.

its because everyday the masses get lazier(i dont mean that lieterally) and give up more rights so they dont have to do anything and the govt can take care of them

Personally I think governments are terrorised by the people. This is the sole reason that people within government want to 'make us safer.' Really they want to make THEMSELVES safer... from us! Be it from being exposed to different ideas or the fact we might overthrow them at some point in the future: They are afraid of us, and seek to control what they are afraid of.

US.

The real question is: Shall we let them?

All governments should at least have to listen to what the people want. Of course governments should be afraid of the somewhat formidable threat of the entire population of their country.

I'm reminded of both animal farm where the animals at first didn't react to the laws that they thought were out of place and the poem that goes like this:
"First they came for the Communists, and I didn?t speak up, because I wasn?t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn?t speak up, because I wasn?t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn?t speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."

So maybe it's the people's fault that governments have become complacent, because people don't react strongly enough to what they perceive as minor issues.

In my opinion governments need a good shaking up, since even a good picket line isn't enough to make them listen these days.

So everybody, remember this:
Laws only work if everyone obeys them.

As for the subject of gun control... I've come to the conclusion it is all personal opinion and nothing more! This is a grey area and like all grey areas it can not be broken up into a right or wrong argument. Enough statics and evidence exists for BOTH sides of the debate, so it all comes down to personal choice which you like to believe.

Like usual, once a side has been taken there becomes the usual stalemate, where people are unwilling to even listen to people of other views and instead bang on the table and shout that they are right and everyone else can shut up. Once this happens we move away from methods to reduce the harm of firearms in society and end up just shouting at each other that 'guns are bad mmmkay' or 'from my cold dead hands.'

Pathetic...
