I was recently replaying Mass Effect 2 for the umpteenth time, and there were a couple of instances where some dialogue really threw me off. It felt like they didn't belong in the atmosphere and attitude of the game.

The first part was talking to Aria on Omega. She states there is one rule, and that is "Don't fuck with Aria".

The reason this bothered me was because up until that point (which admitdly wasn't far into the game) the worst language that had been used was "son of a *****". But it didn't bother me for long because the rest of the conversation seemed to revert back to the Mass Effect norm.

But then comes the one part of the game i hate, and it pretty much is the dialogue of the character.

Jack, i hate her. Every single line she says makes me want to launch her out of the nearest airlock. It reeks of trying to hard, the fact she has to swear to put across that she's a "hardcore *****".

People say Bioware are master writers, but i feel they failed with Jack, because they had to have her swear like a trooper to get across her character. I'm pretty sure they could have done it without resorting to constant "fucks" and, whilst not making the character any more likeable, would have made her at least seem to fit in the Mass Effect universe.

Anyway, after my probably awful opening post, what dialogue or instances in a game have you found that you felt were not in character with the game?

Well to start with, you need to know that in the Golden Sun series, the player character is mute. Never says anything. So, in Golden Sun: The Lost Age, you come to this little mini-game style challenge you have to complete to advance. Another character explains the rules, and Felix, the player character who is supposed to be mute, gets a line. He asks the other character "Why?" It's actually kind of funny though, so it's not an "I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THIS THEY RUINED THE GAME!" moment. But he's not supposed to be talking dammit! :p

Also, maybe not completely out of character with the game, but Star Fox Adventures was constantly presenting me with this set-up: I would get done watching a cutscene where some character would explain to Fox and Tricky where they need to go next. As soon as gameplay resumes, Tricky loudly and enthusiastically asks "Where are we going?!" If he didn't have brain damage before, he does now after all the times I whacked him on the head with my staff.

There are probably much better examples than either of those I could post, but I can't recall any at the moment. :(

I'd say alot of RPG's nowadays are notorious for having characters that make those weird little noises during CS's. Vanille of FF13 takes the cake in that department (if her "dialogue" isn't out of place I don't know what is.) Seriously, we don't need to hear weird little grunts/sighs/moans. A moment of silence is acceptable once in awhile...

Hahahahahahahahaaa *snort* Carelessness.
I loved Golden Sun. I never got through it all, but I got the gist of it. I have the second game ready to go once I beat the first and the DS game will hopefully magic it's way onto my game shelf.

I personally find alot of RPGs (mostly JRPGs) are in on all of that unusually placed dialogue stuff. I think it's because of translation issues, and the dubs end up putting in sentences here and there that dont seem to work that well.

All I know is that your character sounds like Superman when he talks. It really got boring to hear it after awhile.

I've been playing (or rather been watching my brother play) the Blops zombie survival game, and it gets really annoying since every character has to make a clever little joke with EVERY fucking thing they do.

If I was pinched every time that Russian made a vodka joke, I'd be dead right now.

one game that's dialogue really bothered me and seemed out of place was Oblivion
If you just sat and listened to the NPC's talking to each other they would spout the same 5 lines of dialogue in the same 4 or 5 voices about the same 4 or 5 things. it was just really annoying. and the worst part was that they often had little to do with anything and were just the equivalent of noise pollution. especially about the mudcrabs.
it was also really weird to hear them give one line of dialogue in one voice and the next in a totally different one, but now im just ranting.

To be honest perhaps it would have been a little more out of place if say...councillor anderson or such had said it

but I think it was suposed to have a little shock value, this isnt ME1 and think about it youre not on the citadel or even in council space (I think) your on omega and omega is a hardcore place run by a hardcore assari...given the circumstance I think it made pretty good sense for her to swear like that...to get the point across

plus its not out of charachter for Aira and personally first time I kind of laughed in a good way though...and I kind of liked aria, with her "know it all" smirk.....and I gues the moral of the story is you DONT fuck with Aria

as for jack...well given her circumstances I would expect her to swear..and its not liek she swore THAT often

"I like shorts, theyre comfy and easy to wear!"

Thats the most out of place piece of dialogue ive ever heard.

Also with the Jack thing, i would assume thats how someone who had been through what she has would act like
