Outgrowing videogames...

As I kid my favourite game was Final Fantasy 7. At the time I thought everything about it was done perfectly. However, after many years of trying to rekindle that love for a good JRPG, I've come to the conclusion that this type of game no longer appeals to me. The only genre of game I really play anymore are FPSs, since most other games fail to hold my attention or interest me.

So my question is whether or not any fellow escapists have come to realise they've outgrown a certain type of game? Or do you think that certain genres have just become stale?

No actually, I still love playing Mario games as much as I did when I was just a youngin'. Everything I find i can never outgrow my favourite genres.

Most people don't outgrow video games as a whole. They still enjoy them, just within different genres and to a lesser degree.

I used to love JRPGs... and now I mock them relentlessly. As we grow, so do our preferences. It does suck a bit, though. I'd love to have that feeling back that I had the first time I played the original Persona, Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 3(VI).

I was just thinking the exact same thing, as a kid i used to love rpgs, especially jrpgs, and now i just can't bring myself to play them, ive got plenty of them but the only rpgs i play these days are oblivion and fallout 3.
Same goes for RTS games, i used to play them non stop, now i never play them atall.
I suppose after playing a certain genre for so long then it can get a bit stale.

For me it's finding time to get stuck into games. While I'm loving Fallout 3 it's fairly easy to play and fun to get lost in. But some games require fat too much thought and time, which I just do not have like I used to. That said, when I do get a day and, if I'm really lucky, a night to myself, I can quite happily get lost using Music2000 or Shin MegaTen.

Felt like that for a while, but now I've picked up that guitar-hero-shit-thing-game-kindoff. And I like it! No more intrigue and elaborate plots, no more fuzzy logics, just you, your keyboard, your reflexes, your sence of rythm, the music and your starting RSI.

I suppose it's kind of a lost cause to keep chasing that feeling that seems to be long gone by now. Damn adulthood! Tis no fun...

That's funny, in most cases I wonder how anyone can play an FPS most of which fail to hold any attention or interest for me (I just tried to work my way through Halo... gawd, the thing was f***ing torturous)

Same situation here. I can hardly bear turn based RPGs anymore - it's all about live action. In my defence I think it invokes fast thinking and decisions in order to succeed, rather than an unrealistic depth of strategy.

The older you get, the less you enjoy turned based games. Its got to do with how your brain works, when you get older you start to see the patterns and its just not as fun. Im still a JRPG fan, just more for the storys now, I find myself thinking the combat more and more tedious. I cant even play FPS anymore, at least not the story modes.

I know what you mean, though it's a different kind of attention I think. I'm refering to having to use quick wits and fast paced gameplay, and if it has a good storyline to boot then all the better. The only thing that will ever motivate me to play through a whole turn based RPG nowadays would be the story, and the graphics to a certain extent.

nope, haven't, and never will. Which on reflection probably is a bad thing xD But I'm not even sure that it is possible to outgrow games, if you do, then you haven't been playing the right games ;)

I find its swings and roundabouts with me. That I can find any time to play games at the moment is a miracle in itself. But when I do relax, I like to play something that interests me. At the moment, I would guess that would be turn based strategy games like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.

Whatever I am doing, I usually find myself playing more on a handheld like the DS rather than a console as I just don't have the time to sit down and get comfortable with playing a game before I have to go off and do something! Darn being an adult ;)

I can't say I've honestly outgrown any genre... and I'm probably older than most of you.
Your younger than me, just. But still I've not out grown any genres, I still like JRPGs although I never get a nice long stint to my self to get to play them. I even enjoyed the newest tomb raider, even though it was too short.

There are some games that you could say I have out grown, such as FF7, but its less out growing them more replaying games from my youth makes me more critical of the flaws a game may have.
