Here's one for the PC gamers to discuss. What is the most overblown, overhyped console game in your opinion, and the PC title that out does it?

For me it was Halo 2. The game that blew it out of the water? Unreal Tournament 2004. It was faster, more violent, and the fights were much more intense. The vehicles were alot more fun and the various game modes gave it alot more variety. On the multiplayer side, it was just as fun with friends as Halo 2, however, the bots were fantasitic and the enemy AI was downright scary at times. Not to mention the modding support later on. True, you couldn't play it on a tv in the dorm, but the PC control set up gave you much better control over your character and it made for some crazy moves in the fights.

True Halo had a storyline, but to be frank, if I want a good storyline I'll go to folks who can actually write them like Bioware. At least they know how to end their games properly.

Little tid-bit. I am a PC Gamer. Played Halo 3. And I LOVED IT. It was a shooter who knew it was a shooter. The combat was fun, the monsters gave me a challenge, just like some of those blokes in HL2 did. Good games are good. Captain Obvious would have told you as much. Yeah, there a story. And guess what, it was well fleshed out too. It doesn't need to be an RPG to be decent. BioWare is the RPG god and bestheda is his *****. But FPS can have a rich background just like RPGs can.

Over Hyped? Yeah, some games are, and for good measure. They are console sellers after all. What would be gaming without competition? What would be the gaming industry without competition? What would be anything without competition?

Not bad, though explaining why would be nice. Or if you mention a PC title that comes to mind explaining why you thought it beat the overhyped game.

And as mentioned, please no extreme flaming. I picked Console titles since they seem to get the lion's share of the hype machine these days. Though if you have an overhyped PC game to throw out there *coughsporecough* that'd probably be ok too. ^_^

Steel yourselves!!!!

Sorry to say but I would have to say modern warfare.............(I know its for pc too but it was mainly a console game)

I, for one, enjoyed Battlefield 2 way more than I did modern warfare. You could have up to 64 freaking players on BF2 which gave the battles a scope that is hard to replicate. The maps were also very large and very open which made the battles somewhat unpredictable.

Thats my opinion of course.

My choices have PC ports but are otherwise not really comparable to a PC game (i've played)

Grand Theft Auto 4, lots of hype, the trailers looked good, the story was intense, but the game, I just didn't find it that fun, and the ending left me feeling empty inside..

Killzone 2, I remember reading somewhere, someone walked past a reviewer playing it and said "Good grief that's a game! It looks amazing!", or something to that extent, the game is very average, with sub-par multiplayer. Crysis kind of knocks this game deep, deep into the core of the Earth.

Coming from a mainly console gamer (I'll play a few casual games on PC), console gamers have no idea what a shooter REALLY is or how it should control. PC players on the other hand don't REALLY know how social gaming can be.

I'd agree with the shooter side, though from the PC perspective you have a control scheme that allows for faster responses and more control (a mouse can be alot more responsive and accurate than a tumbstick). As for the social gaming thing. I'd argue with that one. The majority of social games (mmorpgs I hate to admit) are PC based and long before multiplayer shooters were on consoles there were LAN parties. Though I'll admit that playing a 4 person multiplayer game with friends is very easy and can be quite fun using a console (and each person doesn't have to bring their own pc).

how about some reverse hype?

GoldenEye on the N64 sucks... there, i said it.
I think reverse hype would fit here quite well. Though since the aim is stuff that was overhyped before it's release (and during) a bit more of an explaination of why it sucks would be in order. Something about a room of never ending baddies might work. ^_-

Spor- Oh no, wait.
Age of Emp- God damn it, no.
Starcr- Shit, that doesn't work either.
World of Warc- DAMN IT!

Console games get hardly any hype compared to PC games.
I'd say they can be pretty equal hypewise, though it feels like the console games are getting over hyped a bit more these days. Of course that's where the add revenue is so it's not surprising. I'm sure Majesty 2 would have been hyped to hell had they the money.

As for the picks. Please give either explainations as to why they were overhyped or throw us a console title that out does the PC one. Otherwise it feels a tad flameish "blank sucks! It just does that's why!" Thanks ^^

Hmm... Overhyped console game... Too Human. Indeed, it was too hyped.

And what's this about Halo? It lets you pistol whip intergalactic gnomes, for that alone I look at it as a masterpiece. Everything else about it, though, is so-so.

Ah what the hell, Half Life 2 was the worst shooter ever made except for half life, they never deserved nearly a hundred GOTY awards between them, it should have all gone to the Duke!

To be blunt the only games that don't release to any hype are the iPhone apps that vanish before they even make release. All the other ones sell with promises they can't hope o fulfil, it's just the volume of the people spouting them that changes.
